Attempting to transit The Northwest Passage, in my view, is one of the last true maritime adventures to be found. Man has been trying to find this Nautical Grail since the 1600s and in that time hundreds of lives have been lost in the attempt. Sir John Franklin’s attempt in 1845 ended in tragedy of untold proportions in that both his 100′ ships and 120 men basically vanished without a trace. To this day neither he nor his ships have been found. As a documentarian and sailor with over 40,000 off-shore miles the challenge of such a transit had haunted me for most of my life.

In the summer/fall of 2009, aboard my 57′ Nordhavn trawler Bagan, my family and I set out from Newport, RI to attempt this remarkable challenge; to try and do something that approximately only 24 other personal craft have ever accomplished. For five months and 8,500 miles we had to deal with all that Mother Nature threw at us, many times not knowing if we were going to add to that long list of dead who have tried to find this passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

It comes from a time that gave birth to our country and in one simple sentence explains the essence of what makes us free. The willingness to take a stand for what is right, against any odds.

Those ideals are the inspiration for my character, the mysterious and secretive assassin known to the world only as, “The Son.”

Set slightly in our future, yet close enough to be uncomfortable, the stories expose a layer of evil that goes untouched by the law. High ranking political figures, who use their positions to protect them, while committing unspeakable crimes.

My protagonist investigates the charges against these people and if proven to himself, he takes what he sees as “appropriate action.” His morals and ethics are patterned after the Sons of Liberty. Those revolutionary patriots are today seen as heroes, but in their time that was in question. I leave that answer, as it applies to this character, up to you.

The story of “The Son” is a six book series.
Book six, “The Daedalus Directive,” came out late in 2013.
I began putting my stories on paper after retiring from two, simultaneously held careers. Those careers allowed me and my wife to raise our three children, which is the point of working, but they also exposed me to a wonderful base of characters. People I met and dealt with through the years.

They say, “people change,” and that is true. But personalities are usually dependable, reacting as you expect them to. This gives you a sense of comfort and reliability in both real friends and characters we read about or watch on television or in the movies.

Understanding how people will react to situations is very important in business and more simply, communications.

To me, story telling is basically communicating. Expressing ideas in a way that others will understand and hopefully understand and enjoy. This is how I try to approach my writing

To combat writer’s block and other common ails that seem to plague

best walks are those where she gets on a train and randomly selects a
stop. Many surprising shops and late-night diners (and characters, for
that matter) have been discovered this way.

Jennifer loves New York City, and all of the people that find refuge

I’m Suanne Laqueur and I’m a word alchemist and story artisan. My drugs of choice are attention, stimulation, connection and starvation. I’m at my best when I’m slightly hungry and being flirted with. I’m obsessed with passion and vulnerability – and naps and coffee (though not at the same time). I adore cashmere, the beach and the ballet. But the best thing is when someone says, “You said something to me today and I connected with it.”

I’ve been buddies with anxiety and depression my whole life. My first panic attack came in fourth grade, at the optometrist. They continued to arrive without warning and for no reason (so it seemed) ever since. I struggled through them for decades, thinking I was the only one in the world. I never got help. I figured it was just something I had to deal with.

Then I had my kids. Severe post-partum depression convinced me I couldn’t just tough it out. Lives depended on me. So I went on antidepressants and into therapy and started down a long road of picking myself apart.

It sucked and it was awesome.

How did I get through all of it? I just did. I had to. I knew I would. It’s hard to articulate how, but I think a lot of it was just acceptance. This is happening. This is not forever. This is not everything you are. This is just a thing. And you’ll get through it. In a way, it’s your finest hour.

I started talking about the anxiety and depression more. Making it ordinary. And I found out that so many other women struggled as I did. But the best part was the look of relief and gratitude in their eyes. They’d clutched my arm and say, “Oh my God, me too…”

Then I started to believe I could have anxiety and depression AND be a functioning human. As in, I’m having a slight panic attack AND I am making dinner. It didn’t stop me anymore.

I didn’t write much during this time. I had no time. And I had no…ideas.

When I finally sat down to tell my story two years ago, I asked myself: what can I write about? And by November 2013, I knew it was unfinished business and un-grieved grief. The effects of trauma. How the brain suppresses but does not forget. About feeling it and coming out the other side. About living the truth of who you are and what you feel.

I made a vow that 2014 was going to be the year I finished my story and put it out there, and this past June, “The Man I Love” was born.

I have a story and a gift to tell it.

I wrote this, but a piece of you is in it. You helped make this. You may think that was a throwaway moment but it wasn’t. You may think you’re ordinary, but you are not.
