   Author Bio:
   Joe Sharp lived and raised hell in Richmond, Indiana until the age of eighteen. Then he married Penni, and they moved to Indianapolis. He is the father of Chris, and grandfather of Austan, Ethan and Corbin. He is also the great-grandfather to Katelyn.

   Jan Hurst-Nicholson lives in sunny South Africa where she is personal chef to an elderly picky cat, and doorman to two dogs who are forever on the wrong side of a door. The dogs sit beside her as she works. The cat sleeps on the work.

   ‘Jake,’ was published by Cambridge University Press.
   ‘The Race (an inspiring story for left-handers)’ is her latest children’s book. It also has advice for parents and teachers.

   Born in the UK, Jan emigrated from Liverpool to South Africa in the 1970s. Her experiences moving to a new continent were the inspiration for her humorous novel, “But Can You Drink The Water?’ which was a semi-finalist (top 50 out of 5000) in the 2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award.

   Jan worked in the R&D department of a large bakery for several years, and this gave her the idea for “The Breadwinners” a family saga spanning 60 years and set in Durban.

    AUTHOR BIO DETAILS: G J Griffiths is a UK baby-boomer who worked for quite a while in the Photographic industry. Then he became a Science teacher for about twenty years. He likes reading (lots!) walking in the countryside and birdwatching – Oh! and being a Grandad! Having retired he thought he would like to write a novel. So why did he write the first one?

    Who Do They Think They Are?

    Watching those programs on TV about different people looking into their ancestral past, and seemingly becoming very upset about certain individuals in their pedigree, he wondered about how much their emotions had been stirred by forebears, such as cousins, grandparents and even great grandparents. After all they had never met them or never even knew about their existence previous to their research. The tears, regrets and often anger that became evident on the screen betrayed how delicate feelings may often lie very near the surface.

    At the same time he had been reading Winston Churchill’s volumes about the Second World War and also reading about the Battle of the Bulge, of Band of Brothers fame. It occurred to G J Griffiths: What if someone was looking into their ancestry and discovered that their forefather was involved in plot to assassinate a famous general from WW2? What if that general was George S Patton who was so vital in relieving the US troops trapped in the Battle of the Bulge? He had read that Patton often could be a thorn in the side of his senior officers at that time.

    And so he created three pivotal fictional characters around this idea of unpleasant discovery; of an assassination plot involving the father of Chris Squires. The father he never knew dashes his hopes to the ground. How would Chris feel? How would he react? Once the author started writing the story the characters took over and he had to continue the tale where they took it! It became his first novel, Fallen Hero.

    When GJ started writing Fallen Hero he was already well into the collection of stories later to become his second book: So What! Stories or Whatever! But the general direction of the plot and many of the characters were not properly formed at that time. Then along came the idea for Fallen Hero and that took over for the next 18 months or so!

    Originally, after he had retired from teaching GJ just wanted to write and write about many of the kids he had taught and tell his readers about some of their hilarious tales. But after a while he realised that so many of the stories would be tinged with sadness or tragedy or poignant moments, and that it was not going to be just another “book of funny stories”. If he was going to include some of the difficulties that the kids’ teachers also faced, many times a day sometimes, then he had to also write about why they wanted to come into education, and more importantly, why they were determined to stay in it!

    So Robert Jeffrey was “born” and his story is gradually unfolded and woven between the collection of students’ stories. Robert’s determination to become what he feels is a “good teacher” became a main theme throughout the book. There was a danger then that the book would become a continuous whinge from yet another cynical, grumbling teacher. Enter Kyle Crabbe, the bully, and some of the tales begin to have a sinister theme to them! With that stage set it meant that G J could lead the reader up a path that would allow a twist to it! Be surprised – be very surprised!

    Some of the books that Robert Jeffrey had read and that had inspired him to want to teach coincided, strangely enough, with some of the list that G J Griffiths had also valued. It was a list that included: R Delderfield’s “To Serve Them All My Days”, Thomas Hughes’ “Tom Brown’s Schooldays”, D H Lawrence’s “The Rainbow”, E R Braithwaite’s “To Sir with Love”, “Neill! Neill! Orange Peel!”, plus, of course, a couple from The Master – Charles Dickens, such as “Hard Times” and “Nicholas Nickleby”.

    G J Griffiths still has many more So What! Stories to tell. Until he had almost finished his second book he hadn’t realised that there was going to be another book-full to come out of his head and onto the written page – maybe even more than one more book.

    Several of my teachers in high school were young women who had just finished ‘teachers’ training. Ours was the first class they had taught for a full school year. The young teachers were about six years older than their students.

    Sex was a frequent topic of discussion with our young teachers. Are you still a virgin? Have you ever had sex? Do you enjoy sex? Do you use protection? How often do you and your girlfriend have sex? The young female teachers asked the boys these types of questions. All of the boys thought it was cool having this kind of personal relationship with our young female teachers.

    Some of the young women teachers gave private sex lessons to the more mature male students. I was not advanced or mature enough to be given lessons, but we had lots of personal contact and inappropriate discussions with our young female teachers.

    Was what we did with our teachers wrong or harmful? I don’t believe that I suffered any emotional or psychological harm because of the inappropriate behavior of our young female teachers. However, I am in therapy.

    The three men waiting for me at the first tee had to be locals – their skin looked like lizard hide and their eyebrows were bleached blond. I know that if I asked they would say, “skin block is only for people from the mid-west, we don’t care about no stinking skin cancer.”
    They hadn’t rented carts. There were at least four of us on the course who still have legs.
    Since I have never been good with money, I agreed to play in their skin game.
    “Besides loosing a lot of money you are making one big mistake, your golfing and falling in love fantasy is about to sink,” my Guardian Angel said.
    “People don’t like to be talked to when they play golf,” I told him.
    The first hole was a dogleg left, par four, 428 yards long, with nothing but sand dunes covered by small bushes and large cactus on either side of the fairway. Beyond the sand dunes to the right were brand new stucco homes big enough a man’s parent’s, all his grown kids, his first wife, his new wife and her three kids, and her ex-husband, could all live and never see each other. They probably started at around a million and were owned by rich people from Belize who left South America to get away from Americans.
    The first lizard skin hit his drive down the middle of the fairway. The second lizard kind hit it down the middle. The third lizard skin hit it down the middle. I took two practice swings, lined up, and hit it hard, but pushed the ball to the right deep into the sand dunes Powell could have used to practice tank maneuvers on before he went to Iraq.
    “It’s a tough shot from there,” one lizard skin said.
    “You’ll find it,” another lizard skin said.
    “Get out your money,” the last lizard skin said, smiling like a cat playing with a mouse.
    “Please, don’t go look for your ball,” my Guardian Angel begged.
    “What did I tell you about talking,” I warned him.
    “Is Roosevelt annoyed he hit his little white ball into the rough,” he taunted.
    I’d kept a good eye on the flight of the ball and marched determinedly after it. Once I was in the sand dunes, I could no longer see the fairway. After a few minutes of futilely looking for my ball, but seeing nothing but lizards, cactus, and Inca doves, I was about to drop another ball when I saw a small hill of sand more than two feet tall and six feet long that I hadn’t looked behind. I prayed my ball was there. Taking a two shot penalty on the first hole isn’t exactly the way to start off a leisurely afternoon.
    “Forget the hill, take the penalty,” my Guardian Angel said.
    Walking around the hill my Guardian Angel gasped. There was my ball. I had a clear shot to the green. There was only one problem. I had a bad lie – my long distance golf ball that was designed to stop within twelve feet if it landed on concrete rested between the breasts of a naked lady – a naked lady with a short piece of rope around her neck and her dry tongue hanging out of the left side of her mouth. Ants were crawling on her eyelids.
    “Roosevelt,” my Guardian Angel implored. “Why didn’t you hit the ball straight?”
    “I should have listened to you. You never steered me wrong. I should have gone to Idaho. They don’t play golf up there in the winter. All they do is sit around and drink, talk about over throwing the government and eat elk meat.”
    “You have always been good at wrong decisions,” he said.

    Lyneal Jenkins was born in Shrewsbury, England in 1980. In 1996 she left home to become a Medic in the British Army. After three years she resigned the forces to start a family and begin her work with learning disabilities, which is when she was diagnosed with bipolar depression.

    Lyneal Jenkins was born in Shrewsbury, England in 1980. In 1996 she left home to become a Medic in the British Army.

    After three years she resigned the forces to start a family and begin her work with learning disabilities, which is when she was diagnosed with bipolar depression.
