   Rob J. Hayes was born somewhere south of the cockney wastelands in a small town called Basingstoke. He grew up with all the usual boy toys including Lego, Star Wars figures (complete with working lightsaber action) and plenty of Transformers.     A Myth to the Night is a contemporary YA Fantasy but includes many motifs found in ancient myths and legends. I had originally planned for it to be a graphic novel but found that the drawings couldn’t express the deeper emotions that were the essence of my characters — the narrator especially.

    WHY EVOLVE?

    What is the fundamental cause of evolution?
    Widely accepted modern theory of evolution lists down mutation (of sex cells), natural selection, limited size of population, partial breeding, non random mating, difference in the number of offspring as well as migration as the seven conditions which are contributing to the smooth conduct of evolution. What embellishments has nature instituted, to facilitate all (or any) of these conditions, similar to pollination, seed dispersal etc existing in plant life?
    With that in mind, if we are to study the male and female among all forms of life, many peculiarities become easily explainable, and also, in the case of humans, more and more of such peculiarities become identifiable. For example, take the livelihood men and women follow. Women are at ease with occupations which have constant, predictable elements. Housewife, the most popular career among women, is an example of such a line of work, more so, when she is caring for the same husband. For, the reactions required from her can be reduced to some activity of recurring nature, the few instances necessitating unique response being those caused by rare and unforeseen events. Any significant exception to this happens only when the husband is under the influence of alcohol or other concoctions producing similar effect, and, as long as such distractions are kept at bay, she can continue her sojourn with the ‘known evils’.
    Why should there be a difference between male and female in neutral areas, for example, outlook, perception, and attitude? The existence of the ‘masculine’ and the ‘feminine’ in all areas of human interactions have been observed since time immemorial and these peculiarities were getting attributed to such innocuous causes, like, the varying effects of social and other influences on different sex, the non uniform male and female instincts as well as the dissimilarities between the natural reactions of man and woman while responding to environment, not to mention, suppression of females over the ages. In short, these telling behavioral quirks as well as the incidence of such differences in other forms of life have not been given the attention they deserve.

    We can seen that ‘nonprofessional’ approach is an integral component of everything male. Have a quick glance at the existing collection of literature and find that rather than acknowledging that these point to certain unexplored territories in the orientation between male and female sex and consequently opening up new frontiers of knowledge, almost all exponents have simply and perfunctorily attributed them to the chauvinistic conspiracy of the male to deny females their due. Thus we are in a vicious circle. The male, always on the defensive with the burden of proof to show that no conspiracy exists and the female, always on the offensive with long a list of holes in every such ‘proof’. This in effect has put a stop to any meaningful research (which would have produced such a paper as this much earlier!) that could have been undertaken by men as well as women.

    Assuming that few men (or women), probably studious ones, broke from this vicious circle and got engaged in research, let us see what would have been the outcome?

    They shall be reaching an important conclusion – the male is a poor performer as far as the essential male function is concerned. As he is terrified of ‘performing’, which he will have to if he retires to his chamber, he would want to delay that event as much as possible. This explains why, for instance, male animals play with their prey for quite some time before killing it or letting it escape, unlike their female counterparts whose masterly grip on all activities of life is a legion.

    Having already acquainted themselves with this problem as far as animal life go, they would have become geared up to venture into the human life and see how the ‘hominid’ fare as far as ‘performance’ go. Naturally, their attention would have been drawn to the possibility of our forefathers becoming aware of the horrendous future; man is destined to be having in store, if woman too, like the female of every other species, was to express her disgust immediately after each and every instance of sexual union. Further study in this direction would have led them to identify the enormous efforts our forefathers have taken to provide us with defensive armor. What else is the reason for the myriad of strange customs, traditions and manners the human beings can boast of?
    They shall formulate their new theory of evolution, thus.
    Life began with a single celled organism and all other forms (versions) of life evolved thereafter in a process of continuous improvement or modification. That is to say, as and when a new version of life evolved, one more factor of significance happened to get added which could further delay or limit the occasions to ‘perform’ in comparison with the earlier version of life. Evolution of animals with increasing complexity of regeneration system could have been the direction in which life traveled thereafter ending with humans.
    By the time the evolution reached the gate of hominids, possibly having exhausted all natural factors capable of limiting ‘performance’, nature seems to have taken recourse to erecting abstract walls of infinite categories to limit such occasions. Thus we have, unlike other forms of animal life, possibility of limiting male female union based on countless divisions, national, linguistic etc of the social front, size, color, age and others of the personal front, honest, courageous, exciting and others of the abstract front, to name a few.
    Naturally, one of the questions they will be seized of, shall concern the rationale behind the establishment of such a shortfall in male. What magic, most of them shall be wondering, can this do to life? Many a moment of reflection in this direction shall be making them wonder about the commendable foresight and ingenuity of nature in instituting such a simple formula to doubly ensure continuation of species.
