Barbara Devlin was born a storyteller. A Texan, through and through, Barbara hasn’t been without a book in her possession since she was in kindergarten. She wrote her first short story, a really cheesy murder-mystery, in high school, but it was a Christmas gift, a lovely little diary with a bronze lock, given to her in the fifth grade that truly inspired her love for writing.After completing part of her undergraduate studies at the University of London, where she developed a love of all things British, Barbara returned home and began a career in banking. But the late 80s weren’t too promising for the financial industry, and every bank that hired Barbara soon folded. So she searched for a stable occupation, and the local police department offered the answer to her prayers.
Initially, Barbara wasn’t too sure about her new career in law enforcement, but she soon came to love being a police officer. And then one uncharacteristically cold and icy day in December 1998, Barbara was struck by a car and pinned against a guardrail while working an accident on a major highway. Permanently disabled, she retired from the police department and devoted her time and energy to physical therapy.
Once Barbara got back on her feet, she focused on a new career in academia. She earned an MA in English and continued a course of study for a Doctorate in Literature and Rhetoric. She happily considers herself an exceedingly eccentric English professor. Hi! My name is Junia Wonders.I have dreamed of telling stories since I was a child. I can remember telling a story about a family of nine, a father, a mother and their seven children (all below ten), traversing the solitary desert on foot with a lone camel, which the children sometimes rode, all seven of them, when their feet got too tired. How did they all fit on one camel you might ask? Well, a rolled mat was placed on top of the camel’s hump. Balancing precariously, three children sat on each side of the mat and the seventh (the heaviest one) sat in the middle.
Every night, they would stop somewhere, preferably near an oasis or a sheltered spot to camp and rest their weary legs. The children would gaze at the night sky and make up stories about the stars. I was around five when I first thought of this story. I doodled on my lined notebooks and told myself this story over and over until I grew older and came up with other stories, which I can’t remember anymore. But it was one of the happiest times of my life, imagining this family travelling endlessly under a picture perfect desert sky.
One day, I woke up and realised I had finally obtained a degree from a respectable university, but it had nothing to do with creative writing. It was for the best, I thought, as I needed to let go of my fancy imaginings (silly made up stories!) and become a responsible adult, which meant I had to get a job, get my own apartment, earn my own keep so to speak. And that’s what I did for the next decade and a half. But a voice inside me kept pestering me to sit down and write those stories. I don’t know about you but when you start hearing a persistent voice inside you telling you to write a story, you’d better sit down and write that story. I am just sorry I’d waited this long to finally give my dream a chance. All those wasted years doing repetitive things that I wasn’t passionate about. But I can’t turn back time and I most certainly refuse to live in regret. Each day I have from now on is golden; an opportunity to make my dreams happen. Thankfully, it is not too late.
Having ignored that voice for so long, I finally listened to it. I began writing. And for the first time in my entire life since I came up with the story of the family traversing the desert on a lone camel, I feel so alive. Like a heavy black shroud was lifted from me, leaving me ten times lighter and freer. Is this what it feels like to finally pursue your passion? To chase your dream? Because it is such a wonderful feeling. Throughout my life, I’ve tried a few different career paths, but none of them come close to making me feel this happy, this fulfilled.

As a child I had stories going through my head. It took me a long time to realise I should write them down, therefore clearing my mind. Little did I know another one would pop up!
I wanted to be painter since I was a child. I was told, while being assessed at the end of my art foundation, I should go into drama or be a stand-up comedian. I’m short, so even if I did ‘stand up’ it’d be hard to see me and I realise that was their way of telling me I was rubbish at art.
I’ve worked in various jobs and I have been extremely lucky to do what I wanted to do… though I have a habit of changing my mind every so often.
If you want something, go for it. The only thing holding you back is you. You only have one life so don’t say ‘if only’ say ‘well at least I tried’.
Writing, like anything creative, is an exposure. Not everyone likes what you write, what you say or what you think… but some people do. That’s my focus. On the people who like what you write… what I write.
