I was born in Staffordshire, near Etruria, the place made famous by Josiah Wedgwood, but was brought up in Sydney, Australia and later in Lancashire, England. I studied astrophysics at Newcastle University, where I started the student science fiction society. Writing novels has always played a part in my life, and I’ve tried to see the world enough to be able to write fiction with the help of personal experience.After university, the US oil industry was booming so I went to Dallas, Texas, later on I worked on rigs in various parts of the Middle East and the war-torn heart of Africa. I was aboard the Ron Tappmeyer, a rig that blew out in the Persian Gulf, killing 19 men. It was dangerous work, but well-paid, and it took me to places that outsiders rarely see, like the Rub-al-Khali of Arabia and hard-to-reach parts of equatorial Africa.
When I left the oilfields, I spent time on travel, first to East Berlin and Warsaw, then to Moscow and Leningrad. From there I took the Trans-Siberian railway to Japan. In Hong Kong, I worked on a road survey, took tea with the heir of the last king of Upper Burma near Mandalay, and on the path to Everest base camp just happened to run into Sir Edmund Hillary. After traveling around most of India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, I returned home and took up a job with the BBC. Four years later, I left BBC TV to write. I finally settled in London, but I still like to head off to interesting parts when time allows.

My passions are reading and I read a lot! Secondly, I love movies from the 20s through the 1950s. My partner Bill and I attended the first two Turner Classic Movies Classic Movie Cruises. We met Ernest Borgnine, Eva Marie Saint, Sally Ann Howes, Mickey Rooney, Debbie Reynolds, Alex Trebek and of course Robert Osbourne. Imagine sailing on a large cruise liner to Key West at night. You are sitting on the open deck with a warm breeze blowing and being waited on by our own personal waiter. There is a theatre size screen in front of you showing the film “Key Largo”, with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. I can never watch that movie again in the same mindset. That was the ultimate movie ambience! As for my third passion, it’s writing ‘cosy’ mysteries. These are the kind of stories I love the most to read as well. The poems investigate relationships and indicate the advances that have been made since those relative connections were discovered. Monkeys points out the need to think and communicate, all the while watching those basic primal skills deteriorate.
Mundane aspects of marriage, friendship, politics, and technology are explored. When Monkeys feel Rhythms peels back the layers of where humanity has been, what we’ve lost, and where we have yet to go. In “Evolution Lost another Tale,” a tether of technology is addressed:
“do you ever re-think the
calls you made; you’d pound steering
wheels for the roads you raged;
when bumpers were tapped abrupt
so your middle finger rose
and anger was conveyed?”
This poem shows how a race of drivers has evolved. I show the distance primates have come with the wheel they once invented. The wheel’s novelty is worn out and communication can no longer wait until the end of the trip. I ask when the need to communicate defeated the distinct possibility of fatality. When did people become so self-important that they would risk their lives just to be heard? The poem illustrates how technology has enlarged our heads, shrunk the world, and re-aligned priorities.
Metaphors often disguise malignancy. My poems find cancers in society. The rhythms shake; they quiver and flush out the benign. I invite you to examine what is peeled back. When Monkeys feel Rhythms will make you laugh. Some might make you cry. Others look for the moments you like to say “a-ha.” Some are bold, others are shy. Amram honed his craft in classes at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He left in 1989 with a BA in English. Amram’s first publication came in 1998. Since then he has been published in various magazines. In 2005 he published his first book, Would God Move a Ping-Pong Table: a cumulative analysis of faith & religion, inspired by the September 11 terrorist attacks. Using the pen name M.B. Moshe, Amram indie-published The Orthodoxy of Arrogance in 2013. His first book of poetry, Scenes the Writer Shows {forty- one places a poem can go}, was published later that year, also using the pen name M.B. Moshe. Agent of Orange, by Michael P Amram, is his second novel of historically-based fiction, released in February of 2014.
Amram lives with his wife, Deborah Buscher-Amram, in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is an artist and at times they exchange ideas. Part of the title of this book was suggested by her. In 2012 Amram left a fourteen year “career” in medical records to write full-time. He attends a writer’s group, Open Voices, at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis.
