My family life was shattered. My parents and my sisters wanted nothing to do with me whilst I continued to flush my life down the drain.

My romantic relationships were doomed to fail. Finding partners who were as damaged as me was all I could hope for. I thought I could help them. I couldn’t even help myself. Who was I kidding?

My friendships were one sided. They were based on what I could get from others or what others could do for me. I used them. I betrayed them. All this just for one more joint, over and over again. I couldn’t be trusted by others and I certainly couldn’t trust myself.

I tried to leave town and start afresh, but that didn’t work.

Just when I thought there was no escape from the abyss I was rescued.

I record the washing machine of thoughts and feelings I experienced from the moment I arrived in rehab until my treatment was complete.

When Tankse (elder sister) approached me about writing a novel from a Native American woman’s point of view, I had serious reservations. Too often we, as Native people, are romanticized or stereotyped into the same tired versions of what people think we are, the “forgotten people” or “forgotten race”, because so many fall for the stereotypes of us often portrayed in Hollywood movies, sports team mascots, and history books, not realizing that we are still here. We are over 500 culturally and linguistically distinct nations strong. We are still here – and still dancing.

So when asked if I was okay with her writing the book, and if I would act as a consultant, I had to pray to decide if such a project should go forward and if I felt worthy of adding my voice to such a project. Finally I talked over my fears with Debra, my brother and “Spiritual Advisor” Joe Red Bear, ultimately deciding to participate.

In Cedar Woman, Debra has bypassed a lot of the usual hype and BS often associated with Native culture, producing an honest, clear eyed look at who we really are, albeit through a fictional character. She deliberately decided to not show the darker side of our culture: something I appreciate!

I especially love how thorough she was in researching the subject matter, and I deeply admire her dedication to giving a more realistic look into our culture, including much of our Lakota language and several of our favorite recipes!

While I realize that, unless you have lived as a Native, either on or off the rez, you will never completely understand what it is to be Native. I think that Debra has a pretty good handle on who and what we as Native people are really about. And, thankfully, she did not rely on just my voice alone. The resulting story is one I am proud to say I was a part of, and I am proud to call her my “Sister By Choice”.

Raised in New Jersey, just across the bridge from Philly, Jeff graduated with a degree in photography and graphic design from Beaver College, now known as Aracadia University. For some reason his wife of 15 years has supported all his whacky projects and that includes raising 2 kids and 2 cats.

I loved reading as a child, and looked forward to my father taking me to Barnes & Noble to buy a new book. At 10 years old, I was obsessed with Nancy Drew and collected over twenty of her books, devouring them in less than four hours, unable to wait for my next one.

In 6th grade I wrote two novels, I called them The Linda Wells Mysteries. I wrote them in a battered spiral notebook, complete with several hand drawings! It was then that I decided I wanted to write a real novel one day.

But when I graduated high school, the thought of majoring in English scared me. What would I do when I graduated? Sit home all day and write books? I was afraid, and with no guidance, I chose Nutrition as my major, and received a Masters in Exercise Physiology. My two other loves.

Although I went on to love activities like weight lifting, rock climbing, white-water rafting and jumping out of airplanes, there was something missing: no real goal, no end point to reach for.

One boring Saturday evening in September, I sat in front of my computer and decided to write. It became an obsession. Something I buried away for years had finally unleashed. It was my passion. Storytelling. Something I lost sight of as I traveled down my conveyor belt of a life. It was all I wanted to do.

So here I am today, to let you know that I wrote 2 contemporary romance novels. One is now published and the other I plan to publish at the end of August with the hope that someone will love them as much as I loved writing them.

This book made me lose a few hours of sleep. I simply had to finish it. The book turns out better than the synopsis promises.
The author really makes his readers think.
Some segments were a little drawn out, with irrelevant details, but overall I really enjoyed reading this book.
It is quite obvious to me that English is not the author’s native language.
Although grammatically correct, in some places it sounds a little stiff and stilted.
That’s the main reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars.

As the founder of Spiritual Research Institute, his ultimate objective for the present life is to awaken as many as possible and bring peace and harmony to planet earth, as far as possible.
