I started my journalistic career as a trainee court reporter at Marlborough Street magistrates’ court in Soho before joining the Evening Citizen newspaper in Gloucester.I became the entertainments’ editor on the South-East London Mercury and my passion for music led me to weekly music magazine Record Mirror. It was the start of the punk explosion and I toured with The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam, The Stranglers and The Damned. My experiences are recorded in the bestselling book ‘77 Sulphate Strip.
After a brief stint as a music PR for Blondie, The Stranglers, Buzzcocks and Generation X, I wrote the pop columns for the Daily Record, Daily Star and London Evening News and travelled the world interviewing rock stars like Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, The Stones, Bob Marley and The Beach Boys, although I was still hopelessly devoted to punk.
In 1980 I launched the cult pop mag Flexipop! that included an exclusive flexi disc specially recorded for the magazine with every issue. The Jam, Blondie, The Cure, Adam & The Ants, The Pretenders and Bauhaus were among the artists that recorded the songs. Flexipop! was eventually banned for publishing scenes of ‘gratuitous violence and cannibalism’ in a photo story featuring psychobilly band The Meteors.
I then launched Pop Shop magazine in 1988 – also known as PS – which I ended up selling to Robert Maxwell (rumours that a copy of the magazine was found on the fat one’s body are unsubstantiated).
I published the infamous 18-Rated magazine in 1992 that was also banned for showing a man’s bare-arse made up to look like Elvis on the cover. I continued to publish a string of official, and unofficial, pop magazines throughout the nineties.
In 1999, feeling way too old for rock ‘n’ roll, I started Cruise Trade News – a magazine for UK travel agents and the cruise industry – which is still going strong, although I’m not involved any more as I’ve been too busy writing Wet Dreams Dry Lives; Tell Me When, the sequel to ’77 Sulphate Strip; endeavouring to complete ghostwriting the autobiography of Malcolm McLaren and re-launching Flexipop! magazine on line. There’ll be a Flexipop! book in 2014 with a brand new flexi disc from Spandau Ballet.
For anyone remotely interested, I’mis married, have three sons and live in North London.
