My wife and I travel extensively throughout the United States, and we travel internationally at least once a year. Last year we were in Italy. The year before that we toured Ireland. We just recently returned from a trip to France. The travel bug has bitten both of us, and we are hooked. We intend to travel as long as we are healthy enough to do so. Having traveled the world extensively, and having lived in a variety of cultures abroad, has greatly helped my writing. I am a keen observer of others. I have learned so much from having lived in and traveled in other cultures. I love being a part of different cultures, learning things that I would never have known if I had stayed only in my native California.

I have traveled extensively throughout the world, having lived in a wide variety of places: Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Caribbean. Every place I have visited has had some impact on me and on what ends up in my books. DEADLY EYES, for example, is set in the Caribbean, where I spent four glorious years as an English professor at the University of the Virgin Islands on the idyllic island of St. Croix, where the mystery takes place. COVERT DREAMS, my first international thriller, is set in both Munich, where I have traveled to on many occasions, having lived and studied in Germany, and in Saudi Arabia, where I was a professor at the University of Petroleum and Minerals and traveled widely throughout the Middle East.

World travel, I find, opens people’s eyes to new things. It gives them different perspectives about life and how to live that would not have been realized without the exposure to other cultures. World travel provides a better understanding of others. It teaches one a new respect for things that are done differently than at home. It makes one more understanding of others.

I will continue to travel as long as I am able to do so. I will also continue writing as long as I live. The two go together for me. I wholeheartedly recommend world travel. It is one of the greatest educational experiences possible. The sugar-white sands of St. Croix and the burning sands of Saudi Arabia, as divergent as night and day, have both had an impact on me as a person, and both have found permanent homes in my writing. Yes, I have learned much from my international travels, and yet there is still so much more to learn, and I fully intend to do so, starting with our next overseas adventure.

I still live in Liverpool, in an area rich in public gardens and parks, plus a cemetery and a crematorium – great for inspiration, believe it or not. Included in some of the wonderful historical buildings in the area, is the mansion house known as Allerton Hall, former home of Richard Lathom, who fought as a Royalist during the civil war and is a grade II listed building. It makes a guest appearance in my novel, under a different guise of course.

I encourage everybody to try something new as many times in their life without taking it too seriously, or thinking about it too much. This can be as simple as trying a new hobby or sport, or something major like a career change.

A good major decision was changing careers. While this is in the works, I don’t regret taking that plunge, because if I didn’t, its uncertain as to how I would feel right now. Working in an office environment just became too repetitive, stressful, unfulfilling, and not rewarding like I thought it would be. It was the same old thing, I wasn’t helping people, and I wasn’t helping myself. With the economical shifts in the past decade, that made it unstable as I hopped from job to job.

For many years, I was never sure if God existed or not. I mean, the idea of an all-powerful supernatural being seemed a little far-fetched especially since no one had seen or heard of him for hundreds of years. If God was real why wasn’t he fixing world hunger, or war or even making me rich?

But could I really argue with science? Science, who has given us electricity, computers and Facebook. Science that cures diseases, grows our food and lets us cross the globe in a few hours. No, I couldn’t ignore Science…that would be stupid.

So I was torn. Between God (who I couldn’t rule out) and Science (which I wasn’t able to ignore). In the end I decided that it was better to be safe than sorry. The first draft of her first novel, entitled His Kidnapper’s Shoes, was written whilst travelling in Bolivia. Maggie was inspired by an impending birthday along with a healthy dose of annoyance at having procrastinated for so long in writing a novel. His Kidnapper’s Shoes was published in both paperback and e-book format in 2013, followed by her second novel, entitled Sister, Psychopath. Her third novel, Guilty Innocence, has now been published, and like her first two, features her home city of Bristol. She is currently working on her fourth novel.

Before turning her hand to writing, Maggie worked mainly as an accountant, with a diversion into practising as a nutritional therapist. Diet and health remain high on her list of interests, along with travel. Accountancy does not, but then it never did. The urge to pack a bag and go off travelling is always lurking in the background! When not writing, going to the gym, practising yoga or travelling, Maggie can be found walking dogs and fostering homeless cats; animals are a lifelong love!

Covering strings are those little white ribbons that float out so beguilingly on the covers of Amish romance novel. They are, in this authoress’s humble opinion, more trouble than they are worth. I would dismiss them completely but there was one Mennonite church that I know of that split over covering strings, so obviously some insist on them! I don’t have a clue why. If I wore my covering strings in the same manner as the girls on the cover of books I could find all new ways to get into trouble. I might make it through the door, but my covering strings wouldn’t. If I bent over to put the milker on a cow, guess what is getting stepped on. Every nail, every hook, everything that I could possibly catch myself on… I would catch myself on. Usually I would be in a hurry so there would be that dramatic (and incredibly hysterical) snap back of the head. To avoid all this, many of the Mennonite girls in my area slipped the covering strings down the back of their dresses. While this keeps them from getting caught on things, I would tend to forget about them until I felt a tickle on the back of my neck and would then proceed to give a little scream and jump around while beating myself about the face, neck and shoulders. If you want covering strings, you are more than welcome to them. You can wear them in front… tied in a cute, little bow. I’ll pass.
