Synopsis

When lawyer Christina Aaron is hired to help Brodrick LoMaren deal with his recent arrest for assault with a deadly weapon she has questions. A gun she could understand, but this fellow had a broadsword. As a child Christina grew up believing in faeries, wishes and somewhere-over-the-rainbows. Brick makes her feel things she promised herself she would never feel, like a belief in happily every after.
Sparks fly whenever they are together and try as hard as she might, she can’t make the pieces of him fit together. He is reputedly very wealthy, but he doesn’t know how to order wine in a restaurant nor how to tip New York City cabdrivers. He is unfamiliar with elevators or light bulbs and has a social innocence about him she finds fascinating.
Hoping to find what country he is from, Tina accepts the offer of a date, if she can pick the place. They go to the zoo. Here the mystery of Brodrick LoMaren only intensifies. He recognizes none of the zoo animals and confesses he’s never tasted a hot dog and fries, never drank a Coke. Her curiosity over this puzzle continues to grow as does her desire to get to know him intimately. As she treats him to his first pizza, Tina finds her heart slipping over to his side.
Brodrick LoMaren is a prince from a fantasy kingdom complete with dragons, unihorn and a two-headed swan. He quickly falls in love with Tina, and his interest in his homeland wanes whenever he holds her in his arms.
When his father the emperor is assassinated, Brick returns to his homeland. He has kept his secret well. Tina has no idea where the man she loves has gone.
When Brick is exiled from his country by Bryan, his ambitious older brother, he reunites with Tina. They become lovers and for several weeks they live in bliss. Expecting his exile to last forever, he asks her to marry him.
She loves Brick, finding in him everything she is looking for in a man, tenderness, love, passion, humor and intellectual equality, but he refuses to answer questions about his background. She agrees to the marriage if they can honeymoon in his homeland.
Brick is recalled home and vanishes almost directly in front of her eyes. He realizes that he loves Tina but he recognizes how impossible their relationship is. As a good-bye, he offers her a chance to be Cinderella for one night, a visit to a fantasy kingdom complete with a fancy ball, knowing that when the night is over, she will never see him again.
Tina doesn’t want to agree to his terms. She is hurt by his leaving, by his secrets, but finally decides to go. The kingdom is everything he promised her. They make love beside a herd of unihorns where she is granted one wish. At the ball, she dances in the arms of her handsome prince, until assassins come in and attack the new emperor and his family.
Brick transfers Tina and his wounded brother to New York. He then vanishes. The police homicide detective questions Tina regarding the assault. There are too many questions she cannot answer, specifically since her ball dress has evidence of nearly a dozen victims. The detective believes Brick is the main suspect in the attack, a feeling which the Emperor Bryan LoMaren shares.
William Wainwright, an accountant friend of Tina’s is a distant relative of Bryan and Brodrick LoMaren. It is he who is behind the assassination attempt on Bryan and the murder of the Emperor, Brick and Bryan’s father. He has framed Brick for the attack during the Ball.
Brick returns to his Empire and is tried and convicted of murder and treason. He is to be executed. Glad that his scheme is working, Bill forces Tina to witness the execution.
Tina is given a drug which prevents her from speaking, but she finds a swan-feather, the symbol of the LoMaren monarchy, and is able to convince the emperor that Brick is innocent. The feather is able to partially heal Brick who is near death. Bill is discovered to be the traitor.
Back in the Emperor’s good graces, Brick realizes he cannot accept his brother’s wish that he remain in the Empire. He loves Tina and must return to her. They marry, and in the epilogue their two children are at the zoo talking about how an iguana looks like a real dragon.

There would be no more headlines.

It started in a lab at the CDC (Center for Disease Control), virologists were so relieved to finally have an effective vaccination against the virulent swine flu. Pressure to come up with something had come from the highest office in the land. In an attempt at speed the virologists had made two mistakes, first they used a live virus and second they didn’t properly test for side effects. Within days hundreds of thousands of vaccinations shipped across the US and the world. People lined up for the shots, like they were waiting in line for concert tickets. Fights broke out in drugstores as fearful throngs tried their best to get one of the limited shots. Within days the CDC knew something was wrong. Between 4 and 7 hours of receiving the shot roughly 95% succumbed to the active H1N1 virus in the vaccination. More unfortunate than the death of the infected was the added side effect of reanimation, it would be a decade before scientists were able to ascertain how that happened. The panic that followed couldn’t be measured. Loved ones did what loved ones always do, they tried to comfort, their kids or their spouses or their siblings, but what came back was not human not even remotely. Those people that survived their first encounter with these monstrosities usually did not come through unscathed, if bitten they had fewer than 6 hours of humanity left, the clock was ticking. During the first few hysteria ridden days of The Coming as it has become known, many thought the virus was airborne, luckily that was not the case or nobody would have survived. It was a dark time in human history. One from which we may never be able to pull ourselves out of the ashes from.

Karen Chism resides in Michigan with her husband of many years, Jim, and their adorable pet Yorkie, Duchess. After illness forced their retirement and derailed their plans to live out their days in their beloved Branson, MO., their lifestyle was drastically changed.

Jim no longer was able to practice chiropractic and Karen didn’t have a business to manage. They had to give up their enjoyable ballroom dancing that they both loved and had occupied the bulk of their entertainment. Jim’s illness prevented him from continuing his lifelong habit of reading and Karen’s illness, limited the stamina she had to read to him.

As a result of declining health, the simple act of voicing her thoughts or communicating with her husband became very frustrating. She began to randomly record her rhyming thoughts and started to share them with loved ones.

To borrow a phrase from the Bible; except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? The ideas came from teaching children about the joys of music, and when I told them fun stories about animals learning music, they thought this was ‘cool!’

Last year was such a special year in which I stepped over the line from class room teacher and musician, replacing hectic with glam pyjamas, coffee, breakfast, dog training and looking after our small farm with its variety of fun farm animals, to become an author of stories and books for children’s music education.
