I have a bachelor’s degree in photography and a master’s in creative writing. I’ve worked a great variety of jobs in my life (everything from limo driver to professional photographer to university writing instructor), but nothing comes close to the joy I find in telling stories.

Currently, I live in Baja California Mexico with my husband, where we run an outdoor adventure business. Aside from that, I write, read, bike, swim, do yoga, cook, play with dogs and blog. I try to be very Zen about things, but the truth is most of the time I want to snatch as much life and art as I can in both hands … there is so much to learn and do.

Some people – when they hear that little voice that says leap – shut their ears, and go on about their lives, taking no risks, disappointing no one except themselves. Others take off running in the direction of change.

The older I get, the more I find myself wanting to advocate the leaping approach to life, despite the skinned knees and bruises that sometimes result. Without them, I wouldn’t quite understand the world. I wouldn’t have compassion for the mistakes and weaknesses of others. I wouldn’t be able to tell stories.

For me there are no distinctions between spirituality and work, or art and life. As much as people and places do, stories and ideas have the power to transform me at my foundations. I’m interested in books that wake me up or make me dream, those that explore the intersection of subjective and consensual reality, and the spaces we inhabit when we step more fully into our truth.

I asked ten of my favourite self-published authors to contribute a story each to this project to raise some funds for The Devizes Opportunity Centre, a registered charity here in the UK that help young children with disabilities, ASD and learning difficulties get the help and support they need. My son attends the centre and they have done so much for him that this is my way of thanking them. All the proceeds of this book then, will go to this worthy cause.

I Am Not Frazzle is aimed at the child in every adult, it contains inspiring, amusing and entertaining stories. My cover story tells of a voice-over artist for a popular TV cartoon that ironically has a dislike of children until the day he has to use the voice of his character, Frazzle the Dragon to help a young boy in a coma. On the unexpected bizarre adventure he finds himself sucked into he learns a valid life lesson.

This is not the end though as other authors offer us a varied range of styles and genres based on the theme of childlike aspirations, Paul Howard writes a clever story of a child inspired by a meeting with Elvis, Holly M Kothe writes a romantic, history repeating tale, James Penhaligon offers us an African styled fable of a lesson learned by a baboon in true Kipling style. Nancy Brooks gives us an amusing tale of confession from a candy seller while Cecily Magnon goes on an all out fantasy adventure starting in a honest magic shop. Dave Darby sends up brief account of a man coming to terms with his memory loss. Graham Downs thrills with a story of school bullying while Richelle E Goodrich writes a fable of beauty from within in a classic fairy-tale style. Last but by no means least, Maria Miller gives a heart warming tale of friendship in an orphanage.

I began telling stories when I had enough brothers for an audience. It was a crowd control technique as well as fun. However I didn’t become an author until recovering from an attack of MS–I was too busy teaching and doing ministry with my pastor husband.

In a society that values production and performance, highly sensitive people struggle to make sense of the overwhelming data stream that daily bombards them. The Mystery of Spiritual Sensitivity was written to give voice and vocabulary to how highly sensitive people experience life, to help them understand the dynamics that wounded them and caused them to hate the way are, and to bring healing to those wounds. It also touches on how this high sensitivity can facilitate and/or muck up the two most formative relationships of our lives: marriage and parenting.

It explains why God made some 20-30% of the population this way. Highly sensitive people are wonderfully and uniquely designed to be “special forces” in a spiritual war they do not realize they are in. Both sides to the issue of high sensitivity are presented—how it can complicate your life when you do not realize that is the “problem,” and how it can bless and facilitate relationships with others and with God.

Many highly sensitive people struggle with issues of self-esteem and worth, feeling that everything they sense and feel originates within themselves—this of course, is not true, but that is how it feels. Their responses to what they feel can make them feel crazy and others willingly confirm it! I am happy to say the “half the craziness you feel may not be your own!” Highly sensitive people are not crazy, just different from many—and that is a good thing!

Highly Sensitive, the companion volume is about spiritual fitness—building in the structures, habits, and disciplines that will enable you to do “the good works that were designed for you to do from the beginning” (Ephesians 2:10)…. This book is about the issues highly sensitive people wrestle with (trust, boundaries, identity, hearing God) and the inner structures needed to live a joy-filled life as a burden bearer, before the ‘gift’ kills you!

Who should read these books? Anyone, highly sensitive or not!

• Individuals seeking relationship with God and people

• Couples who read it together find it helpful in improving their marriages

• Grandparents interceding for family members and

• Ministry leaders wanting to understand those they lead

• Counselors and prayer ministers who “repair the saints”

People “not so sensitive” will find that they understand their weird relatives a lot better! Understanding is the most loving gift you can give the highly sensitive people in your life—and the remaining 70-80% not so sensitive can learn from them!

After writing these two books on high sensitivity, I didn’t want to write any more “hard” books. So, in quick succession the story lines were given for a series of children’s character building books. At this point, the first two have been published. I have a long list of TBW (to be written) books, both for children and adults. These will be written as I have the resources to do so.

Carol lived in a farming community in Iowa for the first 16 years of life. The family moved to Minnesota where she finished high school and then pursued academics. She loved books from the start. She met her husband, David, during his seminary internship with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They married in 1969, and have ministered together in Idaho, Indiana, Ohio, Australia, Germany, Finland, Canada, and Michigan. David as pastor, counselor, and trainer; Carol as educator and helpmate. They have two daughters and five grandchildren.
