Growing up my mother, a former English teacher, would supplement my homework with mandatory writing assignments. While the deadline was always night’s end, the subject matter could be of my choosing. This unique mixture of severity and freedom served me well during the writing of The Isolation Door. I was 25 years old, lanky and bedeviled by insecurities, trying my best to eke out a living as an actor in Montreal. Being Indian, I’d played enough doctors on-screen to qualify for an honorary M.D. I’d grinned and capered on countless commercials, even toured across the United States as part of a Shakespeare-in-the-Park troupe. But the truth is that none of these performances succeeded in whisking me away from the depressing reality of my existence, which mainly consisted of avoiding human contact and trying to feel something other than numb. The numbness was a coping mechanism which had allowed me to deal with the endless relapse and rehabilitation cycles of my mother’s schizophrenia without losing my sanity in the process, but like a wild animal it now turned against me. Not a single person knew about my past; when pressed I lied, inventing elaborate backstories. But during that endless winter in 2005, I realized two things: I was rapidly descending into a serious depression, and I was sick to death of lying.

Self-educated beyond high school, I taught myself to write through trial and error. Today I’m a pretty good editor and proofreader. My interests are many and varied: astronomy, astrology, geography, geology, science, history, yoga, philosophy, psychology, metaphysics and parapsychology. I am a jack-of-all-trades, a Mensa *almost*, a classical music and jazz fusion aficionado.
