Cahira tells him she doesn’t care if he has a kingdom or not; she loves him for himself. But Raul can’t accept her declaration because he feels a Princess deserves better than a penniless, bastard knight. Instead, he vows to restore what has been taken from her.

In Paris, Raul learns that the Templar Order has been corrupted from within. Philip IV, the French King, uses the corruption as an excuse to seize the Templar treasury and throw all Knights Templar into prison for treason.

Shackled in prison, Raul ponders his fate, regretting he spurned the only pure thing he’s ever known – Cahira’s love. Once again, powerful men, the Grand Master and the French King, have betrayed his trust and destroyed his hopes. When a dying Templar tells him of Templar treasure that has been hidden from the French King, a bitter Raul wishes he were free to seize the booty and make himself rich and powerful.

When Raul is taken away, Cahira is distraught, imagining Raul chained in prison, tortured and awaiting execution. She concocts and executes a bold plan to free him. With Arnaud and their fellow Templars, Raul escapes and rides for the coast.

Raul finds the hidden treasure and with the booty in his possession, he finally feels worthy of Cahira. He declares his love for her and proposes marriage. He also renews his vow to help her retake Kinsole, knowing the treasure will afford them the necessary men and knights.

Overjoyed by his avowal of love, Cahira accepts his proposal. They consummate their betrothal that night.

But the dawn finds Raul wrestling with his conscience. If he takes the Templar treasure for his own selfish ends, he’s no better than the powerful and ruthless men he reviles. He admits his decision to Cahira and begs her to wait until he can honestly raise the funds to retake her kingdom.
