J.P. Borders started reading SciFi & Fantasy when he was 8, but only recently realized how much more he loved writing it. After taking a seemingly inordinately long time to get a PhD in physics (while working on one of the two experiments credited with the observation of the top quark), he discovered a passion for computers that pulled him into the world of programming. He has now been developing enterprise applications in the financial world for 20 years, using C++, C#, and Java.

It was almost by accident that he started writing stories of his own, and has begun an ambitious cycle of books, The Gods in Hiding. The series is based upon physics, computers, and the direct manipulation of reality by the human mind. I am a 42 year old Pennsylvania resident and a newbie book reader (and writer). To this day I have only read 97 books (yes, I keep track – but I do not have OCD), and this is my first release (hopefully one of many in a series).

My main job is installing point of sale equipment in major establishments covering Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Delaware, most of the time adding 1000 miles a week to my odometer.

I am a Dutch art historian specializing in Van Gogh. After completing my BA and MA in art history at the University of Leiden, I worked as an assistant curator at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo (The Netherlands) for the centenary exhibition of Van Gogh’s drawings in 1990.

I then moved to London where I embarked on my dissertation at the Courtauld Institute of Art under the supervision of Dr John House. The topic of the PhD was “Van Gogh’s drawings: an analysis of their function and uses”.

Rather than returning to Holland as soon as I received my PhD, I stayed in London as I had been offered the job of print specialist at Christie’s, the international auction house.

Four years later I returned to Holland and after an intermediate year of writing a book on Howard Hodgkin and organizing an exhibition on Rembrandt, I worked for Sotheby’s in Amsterdam as Director of Business Development for seven years until 2009 before starting my business as an independent art historian writing and publishing exhibition catalogues and books.

I have studied Van Gogh’s drawings for many years, and in particular the relationship between the drawings and the paintings. In the process I closely read all the letters, but merely glanced at Van Gogh’s comments about his life, illness, and the way in which he viewed his position of the artist, dismissing these aspects as belonging to the realm of the personal. I have to admit that I then changed my opinion.

I find Vincent van Gogh as a human being struggling with the purpose of his difficult life as fascinating as the masterpieces he produced. By letting the artist speak for himself I hope to give some insight into the artist’s inner struggle.

When I started on the book, I realized that this was my passion, what I was ultimately meant to do. I loved writing the Foundlings and even if it does not become a best seller, I will continue to write. Publishing my first book led to me meeting my wonderful wife.
