The secondary school in this novel, although set in New Zealand, is very much like the one I went to in England. It was horrific and a dreadful place to try and secure an education. I’m not quite sure how I managed and I was beaten up twice by girls much older, which affected my confidence significantly.I went off to university in Aberystwyth in mid-Wales to read English, taught by a Scotsman and it was a fantastic three years. Over twenty years later and I look back on my working career and scratch my head. I have been a bar maid, a cleaner, a law enforcement officer, a classroom assistant, a special needs literacy coach, a careers assistant and an archivist. Oh, and a wife and mother, which has probably been the most stressful role of all. My husband and I and our four small children emigrated to New Zealand in 2006, with a one way ticket and a suitcase each. People always suspected that we were crazy, but when we left for the airport, they finally knew.

Van Holt wrote his first western when he was in high school and sent it to a literary agent, who soon returned it, saying it was too long but he would try to sell it if Holt would cut out 16,000 words. A draft notice interrupted his plans to become the next Zane Grey or Louis L’Amour. A tour of duty as an MP stationed in South Korea was pretty much the usual MP stuff except for the time he nabbed a North Korean spy and had to talk the dimwitted desk sergeant out of letting the guy go. A briefcase stuffed with drawings of U.S. aircraft and the like only caused the overstuffed lifer behind the counter to rub his fat face, blink his bewildered eyes, and start eating a big candy bar to console himself. Imagine Van Holt’s surprise a few days later when he heard that same dumb sergeant telling a group of new admirers how he himself had caught the famous spy one day when he was on his way to the mess hall.
Holt says there hasn’t been too much excitement since he got out of the army, unless you count the time he was attacked by two mean young punks and shot one of them in the big toe. Holt believes what we need is punk control, not gun control.
After traveling all over the West and Southwest in an aging Pontiac, Van Holt got tired of traveling the day he rolled into Tucson and he has been there ever since, still dreaming of becoming the next Zane Grey or Louis L’Amour when he grows up. Or maybe the next great mystery writer. He likes to write mysteries when he’s not too busy writing westerns or eating Twinkies.

I’m a screenwriter and I love films. I also love all sorts of visual information like photographs or computer graphics. I always judge a book by its cover first. When it came to my own science fiction novel, Presence, I knew I wanted to have a great book instead. But when I was finished with the story and I was truly proud of it I also decided to create a beautiful cover art for it as well. I came up with a couple images that were appropriate for the cover but my publisher only picked one. After the cover art was settled I still had some visual ideas that I thought could accompany the book well. So I created quite a few illustrations and posters. In this Digital Booklet all of those visual things come together and are combined with a simplified explanation of some of the plot elements. You can also find there the Main Characters List and the Glossary. So I hope at least some of you will enjoy this one. I spent months doing it and I had a lot of fun.

I’ve never really considered myself a writer. I was always told I was supposed to be an artist. Instead, I began a career as a tree trimmer and a tower climber, and have been doing one or the other for the last twenty years.But over those twenty years, I noticed that I had developed a knack at making people laugh with my ridiculous imagination. Whenever something happened that was funny, I would begin imagining scenarios that would make that funny situation even funnier, and people seemed to find it genuinely funny.
One day on a whim, I started writing down all the funny little stories I had created in my brain. And I found plenty of inspiration for new ones from my wife and two mischievous daughters. I put them all on a blog called “The How-Not-To Guide To Parenting and Marriage”, and again, people seemed to find it funny. I enjoyed writing on my site for several years until my life got too busy to keep coming up with new material, and I stopped posting.
Years later, while recovering from multiple shoulder surgeries, I began to resurrect some of the stories and put them on a Facebook page and self-published book, both also known as “The How-Not-Guide To Parenting and Marriage”.
I still have a hard time thinking of myself as a writer. I feel more like a funny guy who just happens to write it all down. I guess as long as people still seem to get some sort of enjoyment out of it, I will continue to pursue it, regardless of whether it feels like I am a writer or not.
