“Pauper child apprentices from workhouses were not even paid after working 12 hour days and for 5 or 6 days a week, mill owners counted the profit!”
In the early 19th century, when it was the policy of many of the poorhouses and workhouses to deter paupers from applying by making the conditions inside harsh and unpleasant, two boys set out on a journey to Hackney Workhouse in London. Their starting point was in the pleasant Cheshire countryside, where they were apprenticed to the cotton mill built by Samuel Greg in 1784. Children as young as 9 would be employed there, as scavengers, piecers, mule doffers or can tenters. These jobs could be just as unpleasant and difficult for a poor child as those we may have heard of, such as chimney sweeps and match girls.

Quarry Bank Mill was some 200 miles north of London and the boys had to sneak out unnoticed and then attempt to walk all the way. It was likely that these enterprising travellers took advantage of the drovers’ roads and the newly developed “motorways” of the times – the canals. Perhaps they were lucky enough some days to hitch a lift; their general direction of travel taking them to Beartown, the Potteries, Dunstable Downs and eventually to London. Whatever challenges they encountered along the way archive evidence shows that they made it.

Runaway apprentices had become a problem for society during the years of the Industrial Revolution – so what had prompted Thomas and Joseph to do such a hazardous thing? What happened to them on their long journey? Did they receive any help? Or were they chased relentlessly wherever they ran, since what they were doing was illegal in the eyes of the authorities?

This is the story of their adventure and it concludes with the events in the Middlesex courthouse, known then as the Old Sessions. Free Kindle June 14 to 15, 2019

Growing up in such a diverse environment taught me to embrace different perspectives — something that still helps me solve problems today. I learned that we all bring our own life experiences and other views are just as legitimate as my own. I also learned that in the end, no matter what culture or value system we’re from, we all want the same things: a safe place to live, something to eat and time to spend with our families.

My father, Hans, was instrumental to my success. When I was a kid, he made sure I was exposed to the global community. As an adult, he taught me about hard work — that you have to put in the hours to enjoy success. But behind the big lessons were the little things: looking people in the eye, and listening to them; sharing ideas; shaking hands; and taking an interest in something other than yourself — basic stuff that not enough people do.

Last May, my dad passed away. While I was heartbroken, I also realized how lucky I had been to have a wonderful role model who taught me about family, finances and finding your purpose. I wrote this book to pass those lessons on, and pay it forward in Dad’s memory. There’s nothing he would like more than to know we built a thriving community where we could share successes and support each other.

“You’ve summoned me yet you don’t know my name?” He asks in a way that suggests I’m teasing him. The flames curl back into a smile.
“Are you a demon?” I ask. It’s the best guess I have based off of my extensive Netflix research.
His laugh is deep and rich against the crackling from the firewood. “You’ve watched too much ‘Supernatural, Percy.’” Damn, he is good.
“That’s a weird thing for a demon to say.” I squint my eyes at the flames.
“How so?” he asks, “It’s the number one watched show in Hell.”
“See, now that sounds more like something a demon would say.”
In an instant, the face in the flames disappears as a column of black smoke pours from the fireplace and fills the room.

Jake takes them to a rental storage complex, where they can bandage their wounds and regroup. Inside the complex they are fend off and kill a pair of gingers that have wandered inside. They spend the night in a storage unit and realize Jake’s gunshot wound requires medical treatment they are unable to give. Jake decides to find EARL, his estranged partner from the police force, who has the necessary medical supplies. Sam initially resists, wanting to find Rachel instead, but relents when Jake points out that Sam owes him for fending off the gang members.
The next morning, they drive to Earl’s hideout only to be ambushed on the road. With their SUV totaled, Sam and Jake get pinned down by another group of survivors and in desperation call for help. Hearing their calls, Earl comes to the rescue and covers their retreat to an underground bunker. Once safely inside, they tend to Jake’s gunshot wound and spend the night. Having repaid his debt to Jake, Sam tells of his plan to rescue Rachel. Jake and Earl recognize the gang from their days on the police force and agree to come along. They load up and take Earl’s old police car to the gas station where Rachel was shot.
With Earl covering him, Sam meets with the gang is arranging for Rachel’s release when a firefight breaks out. They end up killing the gang members and freeing Rachel, but Jake is shot again compounding his originally injury. To make matters worse, the noise of the fight has attracted all of the gingers in the area. The four of them run for Earl’s car, but Jake’s injuries slow them down. Recognizing this, Jake stay behind to hold the gingers off and buy them time to escape.
A month later, Rachel has recovered from her gunshot wound, but morale is low after Jake’s death. Rachel determines that life must have a purpose greater than mere survival, and resolves to share her beliefs with Sam.

I am an engineer by degree and profession. I graduated from the University of Virginia in 2014 and moved to the Hampton Roads area where I’ve worked on submarines, aircraft carriers, and airplanes. I also have an ever-growing LEGO collection which led into my interest in the post-apocalyptic/zombie genre.
I was drawn into the post-apocalyptic genre by people building “apocalego” themed models and vignettes. The engineer in me was intrigued by the problem of surviving and making do with limited resources. Moving past the technical side of things, I was also intrigued by the moral balance of doing what is best for yourself versus doing what is right. Thus, I began exploring and enjoying post-apocalyptic-and inevitably-zombie fiction. Fast forward a few years and somehow, during engineering school, I had enough time on my hands to become bored. So, I began compiling ideas for my own zombie story.
The concept of using the rapture as the cause of the zombie apocalypse developed when my church studied the book of Revelation. This provided a simple, if not convenient, answer to several important questions like, “Why are there so few good Christian characters in zombie books?” and “How could a zombie outbreak be triggered to create world-wide societal upheaval?” At that point, I was positive no one else would ever write such a story, meaning it was my responsibility to make it happen. I overcame my fear of words and writing (engineers usually don’t grammar good) and began piecing the story together.
This all started as little more than a series of personal challenges: to see if I could write a short story about the zombie apocalypse, reference the rapture as the cause, and create a protagonist whose gender is never stated. It also happened to be how I won my wife’s heart. I’m normally a quiet internal processor so when she read one of my old drafts, she saw how my mind worked and apparently found it endearing. After we got married she encouraged me to finish it and get the book published.
