Sheila waited until the Cessna was well out of sight before reemerging into the glade, still feeling the ground vibrate—which she had first noticed upon crouching so near to it in the bushes—still sensing that something was coming, and still only half aware of where she was or how she’d gotten there.

It was, in a sense, as if she still dreamed (certainly the air was still choked with smoke as it had been in her vision of Bozeman), and yet, beyond that, the clearing had about it a slumberous quality all its own, one she could only liken to a cathedral or other place of worship, at least until the M1-A1 Abrams tank appeared at its opposite end and began rattling toward her.

Holy Mother of God, she thought, as it was joined by another … and another … and yet another still; nor did they travel alone but were accompanied by foot soldiers, themselves armed with flamethrowers. And that was just the first tier. For behind them lumbered a collection of dinosaurs—a triceratops and stegosaurus were easy enough to spot—less obvious were the legions of velociraptors which flitted between the trees like wraiths. And behind all of it strode an allosaur such as those they’d encountered at the Santiago—except this one was mottled red and black and bore a kind of saddle—upon which the Bandana Man sat, perched.

Like a king, she thought. Or a bizarro-verse paladin … who raised a hand, and, without so much as a word, somehow caused the tanks and the animals to stop.

And then there she was, alone against an array of idling tanks and grumbling animals, as the Bandana Man trotted his steed around to the front and simply stared at her, his gaze such that it seemed she was being penetrated rather than merely looked upon, and penetrated by not just two eyes but many, as though the man were not a single being at all but legion.
And she found she wanted to run more than anything in the world but couldn’t. Wanted to turn and dash for Barley and the arms of Sammy and Erik but was paralyzed. And it was at that moment that the man in the bandana swung a leg over the saddle and glided—yes, glided—to the earth, where he touched down like a fog, and she wanted to scream, tried to scream, but couldn’t—and not because her body had become paralyzed but for the simple reason that she no longer had a mouth to do so.

That’s when I really noticed it, the fact that the landscape immediately around the car had changed; that it had—reverted, somehow. I can only describe what I saw, which was that none of the vehicles at the light could have been newer than a ’66, and that the light itself looked decidedly retro, decidedly quaint, at least compared to the one only a block away. More, the storefronts alongside had changed, so that a Kinney Shoe Store now stood where a Taco Bell had just been, and a Woolworth had replaced an Indy Food Mart. Likewise, the pedestrians had changed—yoga pants giving way to miniskirts, athletic shoes giving way to go-go boots and winklepickers, short hair giving way to long. And it was as I observed these things that I noticed something else—the Stingray’s reflection in the Woolworth’s front windows, or rather, the reflection of something which was not the Stingray but which stood—hovered—in its place: a long, translucent, green-black thing, like an enormous wine decanter, only laid on its side, which glowed slightly from within its bulbous body and seemed to warp the very air around it, to bend it, to curl it like burnt paper.

Westley Thomas, a native New Yorker, was born in the Bronx and raised on Staten Island. After High School in 1965, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam 1966-1968. On April 22, 1967 Corporal W. Thomas received a Letter of Appreciation from Commanding General, L.B. Robertshaw for serving as a member of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing’s Contingency Reaction Force. The Force had responed immediately on 24 December 1966, to an airplane crash in a populated village In the Hoa Vang District Quang Nam Province, Republic of Vietnam. 120 Vietnamese Nationals were killed and 20 wounded. The Force provided assistance to the survivors and extinguished the blaze during conditions involving great individual risk. The letter was awarded for professionalism, devotion to duty, and courage. Mr. Thomas received his Sergeant promotion while still in Vietnam. In 1969 he was Honorably Discharged as a Sergeant (E-5). In 1975 he re-enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves 6th Communication Battalion, Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York, until 1977. Mr. Thomas’ service at the Yard and to our country is memorialized on BLDG 92’s Tribute Wall. His military service awards are the following! Presidential Unit Citation, Navu Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (w/3bronze stars), Vietnam Campaign Medal (w/60 device), Expert, and Marksman Rifle Shooting Badges.

Salina is a multiple award-winning author and avid student of Colonial America and the American Revolution. Her lifelong passion for history and all things supernatural led her to write historical fantasy. Reading, extensive traveling and graveyard prowling with her husband keep that passion alive.
