I am currently a commercial loan broker, business and loan consultant, with an extended past in the business world. My experience has covered most aspects of sales and management in retail, wholesale, importing, buying, styling, exporting and manufacturing. Starting in Footwear and fashion I gravitated toward business lending and a new field called “Merchant Cash Advance”. While at the University of Alabama I sold fences door to door and then established my first business, which was a telephone answering service. After being graduated, while waiting to be drafted, I worked briefly as a road sales person selling shoes to small stores in the Tennessee hill country. After my return from being drafted into the army I entered a management training program with the Thom McAn shoe company. This was followed by all aspects of work in the stores. After a couple of years I was promoted to merchandising positions and eventually to a senior buyer. I then accepted a position of senior vice president in charge of merchandising for a 40 store shoe chain, where after a few months I became president of the company. I left there to become SVP of an Import-Export company in charge of sales, styling, production and merchandising. At one point I decided to start my own business; importing and exporting shoes and handbags. I starting importing the goods from Italy and eventually adding other countries, including Brazil, Spain, Yugoslavia, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay. I then decided to export to Russia from the U.S. and Macedonia and from the United States to Argentina with a well-known Argentinian company. Marquesa Funding became very well known in the footwear business and eventually became a $55 million company. I thought that I wanted to retire and since neither of my sons were interested in the business, since they had other talents and interests I retired. After two weeks I realized that retirement was definitely not for me. I answered an ad for a company that was selling to restaurants and entertainment companies called Dining a’ la Card. This was a membership company. The members (diners) received a rebate discount for dining at the participating restaurants. The restaurants were induced to join by receiving a cash advance based on their sales. After becoming their top sales person I was then brought into management. The company was eventually sold and I joined a new company called Advanceme. This company was similar except it was not a membership company but advanced funds to small companies which paid back the advance through their future credit card sales. This book tells the story from my early days as a mischievous boy, my closest friend Louie and antics in Public school, how I almost blew up Stuyvesant High school in Manhattan and then on to the University of Alabama where I met and married my current wife and luckily did not get caught playing a joke of the Army ROTC., where even after 5 years of ROTC I managed not to be offered an commission. While waiting to be drafted I sold shoes to small retailers in the Tennessee hill country. It was there that I met the first of many people of note. (Cordell Hull and Sgt York). The next stop was the army where I ended up in Korea (and met Gary Marshall of Hollywood fame). I also taught young Korean students English in my spare time. After my service I was offered a job as a management trainee in New York, with Thom Mcan Shoe Company. Frank Rooney hired me and became a friend and was not only one of my mentors but was quietly one of the great business executives that this country has ever seen. He was CEO for 20 years of the Melville Corp and brought it from a volume of $180 million to $7 Billion. Along with Thom McAn Rooney added on such names as Footaction, CVS, Marshall’s, Linen & things and many others. After Frank retired Warren Buffet brought Frank in to help build up his father in law’s company which Warren had purchased. I was immediately sent to training with that famous management guru Peter Drucker. In my book (Then Crazy Life of a Kid from Brooklyn) I write about my experiences and how Frank Rooney always held and maintained the very highest standards of ethics and excellence. My years with Melville were extremely enjoyable and educational but my goal had been to become a corporate president before I was age 35. I was given the opportunity to accomplish that when I was offered a job with a 40 store footwear chain by the name of Kitty Kelly shoes stores. After 2 ½ years of showing the highest profits in the company’s history I left to become a senior vice president in charge of sales, styling, buying and production for an import-export company. After more mentoring, travel and unique experience I decided to form my own company: Marquesa International. This company was built from scratch to a $55 million company. The interactions with governments, government and famous people gave me a unique perspective on business and life. As I mentioned above I then write about my very brief retirement and then entering an entire new field where I again became very successful. My consulting today consists of obtaining funding for SBA, conventional, re-fi loans, convention loans and hard money loans. In additional I am occasionally called upon from Hedge Funds and banks to advise on merchant cash advances.
