About War Accelerated Liberalization by Ramakanth Jonnavittula

This novel deals with the changes in traditions and lifestyles of a
conservative society of an Indian town bordering Pakustan. Therefore
changes in people from different sections of society were considered
here.

War is usually associated with the misery and destruction it brings
about; the benevolent consequences generated by war are not always
appreciated. This novel deals with one such societal consequence. This
was done in this novel by focusing on the lives of students Mita,
Sailaja, Jahnavi, Tridev, Lokesh and Niranjan and residents Vedavyas,
Ashutosh, Sajjanlal and others of Devipur which was a conservative
Indian town close to Pakistan border. All kinds of differences come up
for close scrutiny at the time of marriage. Parts of the novel deal
with issues that crop up in the context of marriages.

Because of regional agitations for a separate statehood for their
region, the misdeeds of the vice-chancellor and the autocratic ways of
the principal, the National Engineering College of Devipur degenerated
into disrepute. The college was restored to the path of progress by
the determined efforts of Professor Goraknadh who staked his life in
that process.

Vedavyas arranged for a customary pre-marital visit of the bride groom
Mukhesh and his father Ambareesh to Goraknadh’s house for a meeting
with his daughter and bride, Jahnavi. The groom misbehaved and left
abruptly; Vedavyas learnt that the groom heard rumors that she was in
love with a Harijan named Lokesh. Actually his allegation put ideas
into her head and she began loving him.

Vedavyas assured Goraknadh that he would bring another good alliance
soon and approached Ashutosh with a proposal for his second son
Niranjan; his brother, Omkar, was still unmarried, so the proposal had
to be dropped. Vedavyas approached Radharaman with the proposal to his
son Tridev; he had no objection if Jahnavi agreed. Vedavyas avoided
going to Goraknadh because it was past sunset. Next day, when he went
half the way, he remembered that it was the day on which Goraknadh had
to conduct examinations. Construction of vedavyas’ house was started
on a plot gifted to him by Sajjanlal and went to look at the progress
of work. During excavations for the foundation a Shiv Ling surfaced; a
temporary shelter was constructed for it immediately which served as a
Shiv temple. He became involved with the temple; it accentuated
religious fervor.

Sailaja and Niranjan loved each other. His father Ashutosh was running
a nursing home exclusively for Brahmins; her father Vinayak came from
an adjacent state and was more conservative. Lovers knew that they
can’t obtain the consent of at least one family, for their marriage.
They voluntarily gave up that idea. Vinayak arranged Sailaja’s
marriage with Tripurantak and she invited all her friends for the
wedding, which was unusual.

War suddenly erupted between Pakistan and India, one day before
Sailaja’s marriage. Because there was no discrimination based on caste
or religion in the army, Lokesh wanted to join the services after
graduation; he told his friends that he decided to join the army the
very next day and did so. Tridev convinced his parents and joined the
next day. Niranjan returned to his college, joined the army and then
informed his parents. All the three were sent to the forward areas.
Ashutosh was very unhappy that they could not meet and persuade
Niranjan not to join the army.
Devipur and the neighborhood suffered the consequences of war; Omkar
completed medicine and joined his father. He wanted to enlarge the
nursing home and advertised for a helper. One day, Bharatram came to
seek the job; he worked as a nurse cum compounder at Dr.Brahmanand’s
nursing home at Sitapur; he lost his job because the doctor was killed
in Pakistan bombing. Although he was qualified, Ashutosh refused to
give him the job because he was a Harijan. He was tired of trying for
a job and failing to get one. One day he tried to commit suicide by
running into a speeding car; he failed, got wounded and was taken to
the nearest hospital which happened to be Ashutosh’s nursing home.
After Ashutosh denied a job and sent Bharatram away, the doctor had a
change of heart; he not only treated Bharatram but also gave him the
job. Some conservative patients were peeved and left the nursing home;
soon many people began to welcome the change. Later on the nursing
home was thrown open for all people, irrespective of caste and
religion. Most of Jahnavi’s intimate friends left for one reason or
the other. She felt an urge to do some service useful to the nation
right away. She joined Ashutosh nursing home as a nurse to work during
her free time and during the vacation.

One day Mita came and invited Jahnavi to Mita’s marriage at Ramnagar.
She faced a great disappointment at the marriage because the groom was
not the person she imagined but his friend who accompanied him for the
premarital visit; however their life after marriage was peaceful.

Sajjanlal started coming to the temple by walk early in the morning
and to perform services for God Shiv; his health improved. Bharatram
happened to visit the provisional temple for ShivLing and was found by
his father, Sadhuram; both had been searching for each other for some
weeks; all these were attributed to the grace of Shiv. Sadhuram wanted
to get Bharatram married to Gouri but he refused to get married till
at least one of Ashutosh’s problems was resolved.

Omkar had a soft corner for Jahnavi; she failed to pay attention to an
air-raid-siren. He dragged her to the window and asked her to remain
in the instructed position. The raid occurred close to them. In
fright, she embraced him without her knowledge. He mistook her
gesture; she corrected him crudely.

Father of Lokesh, Bholaram took the letter he received to Radharaman
who also received a similar letter; the letters informed them that
Lokesh and Tridev who were sent on a mission, did not return. Bholaram
could not suppress his sorrow and slipped as he stepped out; he was
admitted to Ashutosh nursing home. Bharatram was sent to his house to
inform his daughter Radha who accompanied him to the nursing home.

Bharatram was sitting in the office room; the phone rang and before he
could come to it, Omkar who was passing that way lifted the receiver.
His love Lucy of the medical college urged him to speak up to his
father. She told him that she was following the changes at their
nursing home and hoped that his father might consent to their marriage
now.

Ashutosh received a letter that Niranjan left the camp but did not
return. Ashutosh buried the letter and its contents deep within
himself.

The temple construction was completed briskly and ShivLing was
installed by Sadananda Swamyji. Sajjanlal bore much of the initial
expense. Vedavyas had a small portion of his house completed and
moved in; he acted as the temple priest and became devoted to Shiv.

Sadhuram and others who used to tidy up the temple premises, touch and
pray to the Shiv Ling were prohibited from entering the sanctum
sanctorum. Sadananda Swamyji convinced Vedavyas that in some famous
temples of Shivji all persons were allowed to touch and perform
services to Shivji and the same liberal practices might be adopted in
that temple also. Vedavyas foresaw demand for the use of marriage hall
by everyone and requested Swamyji’s advice; he endorsed liberal
attitude.

Bharatram spoke to all the concerned persons and convinced them for
the marriage between Lucy and Omkar. First they were married according
to Christian rites and later according to the Hindu rites at a formal
ceremony at the temple. Jahnavi spoke with the concerned persons and
settled the alliance between Bharatram and Radha because she was
willing to continue her studies. The marriage was performed at the
temple. Pak planes zoomed across causing panic but they departed
without an incident.

Tripurntak brought his friend Shabhuprasad home. Sailaja served them
coffee; while receiving the cup Prasad delicately touched her hand and
laughed meaningfully. She looked at him so fiercely that he was
frightened; he started filling Tripur’s ears against her morality. She
boldly nailed his lie in the presence of both of them.

Some persons have strange powers but would not know how they possess
them. Indeever sometimes had visions which came true within the next
three days. Many times he wouldn’t know where and when they would
occur; even when he knew and it was about his friend, he couldn’t help
because nobody trusted him. After a vision, he was able to find the
car and its owners Sajjanlal and Nirmala, forewarned them of the
impending danger and asked them not to use the car for the next two
days. In spite of Nirmala’s caution, the accident occurred as Indeever
saw in his vision. Next time he was able to prevent the sacrifice of a
small boy, with the help of Sajjanlal.

The war ended as suddenly as it began. Lokesh and Tridev returned soon
after the war and related how they were wounded and how a Muslim Lady
doctor treated them and returned them to the Indian Army Camp. In
1947 when their family was migrating to Pakistan, an orthodox Brahmin
protected them, gave them shelter and treated them as honored guests
for three days; that gesture changed their lives and they began
helping people in need, irrespective of their religion or nationality.

There was no news about Niranjan and there was no means of getting
any; his parents felt miserable. Ashutosh became depressed and because
Lucy was also assisting in running the nursing home, he gave up active
practice. For his own benefit the Police Inspector gave large
publicity to the rescue of the boy. Ashutosh wondered whether Indeever
could obtain news about Niranjan. One Sunday, Sajjanlal brought
Indeever to Ashutosh. Indeever said that he can’t induce a vision for
a desired purpose and he didn’t know when, why or about whom he might
see a vision. As he left he happened to see the photo of Niranjan and
recalled that he saw a girl rescue him and take him home along with
her. Everyone was happy to know that Niranjan was alive.

Niranjan was taken a war prisoner and was selected to be returned to
India under an Indo-Pak agreement for exchange of some prisoners. At
the last minute someone else was smuggled in his place and he was
thrown out to die; his parents who went to receive him had to return
dejected.
A Muslim school teacher saved Niranjan, nursed him to health and
married him. Later, he wrote a cryptic letter to Ashutosh indicating
how they can be retrieved and brought to Devipur. Ashutosh’s wife
Sarvani deciphers the letter and they succeed in bringing the couple
to Devipur with the help of a Collecter from each side of the border.
The couple was married at the Temple of Shivji according to Hindu
rites. Later the functions related to the marriage of Lucy and Omkar,
which were postponed, were now celebrated. All couples new and old
joined in the merriment.

The stories of the three returning soldiers had a profound influence
on the citizens of Devipur in rapidly liberalizing their traditions,
attitudes and life styles. Now Devipur was sufficiently liberalized
where marriages among different communities began to take place
between families who remained distant for ages. Soon Tridev and
Chandramukhi were married and later Chakori was married to Bharadwaj.

I won the second prize for my story “Kanuvippu” in 2008 at the
competitions conducted by American Telugu Association. My story

I have translated short stories and dramas from one language to the
other. I have obtained the author’s permission and translated Arthur
Miller’s drama “The Price” into Telugu.
