James Richard is the pen name that I write under. I was born and still live in rural North Dakota, where hard work, moral principles, loyal friends and neighbors, and religion, are still a strong part of everyday life.
What makes you proud to be a writer from North Dakota? I wouldn’t say that I’m proud or fixated on being a writer from North Dakota. I am proud to be a writer, like so many other writers in the world community.
What or who inspired you to become a writer? I was inspired by the author F. Scott Fitzgerald and by reading the novel “The Great Gatsby.” Also by the author Jack London and his many tales of the Alaskan Klondike. Both were very creative writers.
Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? I think in retrospect, the fact that I was a reflective, introspective dreamer as a youth, played a large part in my desire to be a writer.
When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? I started writing when I was about twenty-four years old. Over the years, I wrote three novels. The first two I burned and destroyed in moments of frustration. I regret that indiscretion to this day, since I no longer have any media of those works and I don’t have any hope of recovering them.
What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Breathing life into the characters, and watching them take on a life of their own. It’s amazing when the characters do things, or say things that surprise even myself as the author.
What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Seeing one of my novels in paperback.
Do you come up with your title(s) before or after you write the manuscript? With my only published novel, I recall coming up with the title “Portrait of Penny Lee Hall.” It suited one of the main characters of the novel. That was about midway through the work, but I later changed that to “The GingerBread House.” It was just a matter of preference at the time.
Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? I enjoy writing fiction and historical romances because it gives me a great deal of latitude, allows my imagination to run wild, and I enjoy delving into history. There really is no other choice for me, as I do not see many things romantic or redeeming about the present world we live in. I always thought that I was born fifty or one hundred years too late.
What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book (one book) that you are seeking promotion for? It was born out of my intense desire at the time to be a creative writer. Yes, like so many others, I dreamed of writing the Great American Novel.
What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Believe in yourself, even when everyone else doesn’t.

I grew up in Africa on a diet of unconventional parents, theatre and Georgette Heyer. Eventually I went into acting and trod the boards in England until the writing bug got me, when I changed to teaching and directing while penning historical romances and edgy women’s fiction. Thanks to my grandmother, Nancy Woollcott Smith, I started out in life with the delusion that writing was a thing grown-ups did. Becoming a writer seemed almost as realistic an ambition as becoming an accountant, though less lucrative. That delusion led me to a couple of decades of irregular and mostly profitless work, but it’s also kept me going.
In high school I wrote two novels with a friend. We passed chapters back and forth in between classes. They were written on paper, the first book long-hand, the second on computer. That was before the internet. During the fall and winter after I graduated from college, I wrote a novella/poetry collection, still unpublishable or at least unmarketable. I sent it to about a half dozen agents and collected their more-or-less gentle rejections.
In 2002, I launched into my current project, a multi-volume epic fantasy about the last generation of a land animated by dragon-gods. I set it aside when I had my first baby, and returned to it once my younger child started school. I’ve also written a stand-alone Regency romance, a historical fantasy novella, and a screenplay. I plan to complete and publish the rest of the fantasy series in 2016.

Every since my hair turned white, people keep telling me that I look like comedian and writer, Steve Martin.
And since I live in Southern, California, when people see me out and about, they sometimes think they are actually seeing Steve Martin.

A class assignment in high school actually set me on the path to writing.
We turned in our papers and I quickly forgot about it – The following week our teacher asked me to read my story to the class. I was somewhat stunned, but that’s the moment I became a writer and a storyteller.
Much to my surprise, and I’m sure to the shocking surprise felt by my elementary school, junior high school and high school English teachers – I became a Hollywood screenwriter.
The scripts I sold in that strange land called Hollywood, were family adventure stories.
One script that became a movie is “The Long Ride Home” a family western starring country music singer Randy Travis, Eric Roberts (brother of Julia Roberts) and Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine. The movie is based on my short script of the same name.
While I did not receive any on-screen credit for the screenplay, if you see the movie and like it, I’ll take some of the credit. If you see the movie and don’t like it – it’s their fault.
Every family has stories, and when families get together two things happen.
First, someone always starts by saying “do you remember when Bob was in…” and everyone listens and laughs at the story. Then another “remember when” story, and another, and another. Everyone laughs a lot and has a wonderful time remembering.
By the way, the second thing that happens when families get together is fighting – but I’ll leave that one alone in the interest of harmony and humor.
As an adult, for years and years I had been thinking about our family stories and how much they meant to our entire family. So one day, I decided to start writing them down so that those precious stories wouldn’t be forgotten.
I didn’t tell anyone in my family that I was writing a book about our family stories –
As I sat at my computer and began to write, tears rolled down my cheeks. Some were tears of joy, but some were tears from my heart, expressing a longing we all share for those precious times we all remember from days gone by.
But when my book was completed, it was a book that had come from my heart.
Then, on the occasion of our mother’s 70th birthday, I sent my mother, my sister and my brother a copy of my completed book, “Memories of my Family.”
It turned out to be the best gift I had ever given to anyone in my family. The book not only captured our family stories, but it captured our humor.
When my mother’s copy of “Memories of my Family” arrived in the mail, mom called me and here’s what she said about the book. “Mike, this is the best gift I have ever received and it’s the best gift I will ever receive.” Wow.

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.

I worked the night shift, which starts in midafternoon and ends in the wee hours of the morning.# Daytime customers worry about getting to work on time, making appointments, meeting schedules and so on. Their concerns are upfront and objective, in other words, going from point A to point B. Nighttime customers go out with friends, have a few laughs and forget about anything serious. Their mindsets are recreational and subjective.# Over the years I’ve seen and heard the best and worst of human nature. Just part of the job.# Folks change when the sun goes down. After a few drinks the masks come off. Minds take flight. The shyness vanishes. The whole world becomes high adventure or rosy romance, or making fools of themselves. On the way home, groggy customers will swear they’ve had a wonderful weekend, even when they can’t recall the details. Some will blurt out secrets they’d never tell their sweethearts, friends or family members. Others become confused or even belligerent.# It’s fortunate I was never seriously injured from disgruntled customers or errant vehicles, considering the number of times my cab was totaled by drunk or berserk drivers.Cabdrivers wear many hats: transporter, advisor, jump starter, problem solver, bouncer, bulk hauler, fee collector… all the while fronting the friendly ear of a bartender.# I learned one hard and fast rule. Most hookers are honest to a fault. They don’t always tell the whole truth, but they don’t push you off a cliff. They can’t afford to lie because they operate in that stratum of society which is best left “under the rug.” Hookers don’t have standardized price tags or government seals of approval to fall back on; they have only themselves to trade.# Vancouver wasn’t the city of my childhood, so when I began in the cab business, I didn’t know half of the shortcuts or restricted approaches to common destinations. For example, hotels are often located beside major byways with traffic dividers. Unless you arrive from the right direction, you won’t have access to the hotel.# It was the ladies of the night who taught me the shortcuts and whether to drop off at the front door or the back door. They had ulterior motives, of course, since the shortcuts saved them money on the meter. Yet I got valuable info that made me a better cabdriver, which over time paid dividends.# One night I drove across Vancouver’s busiest bridge. I was ten-car lengths behind the car ahead whose brake lights flashed, the passenger door opened and out tumbled a body. The driver slowed but never stopped. After two somersaults , the body stood up and waved frantically. I pulled to stop and learned she was a lady of night who had a bad date and no money. She asked me to take her to an apartment where she promised I’d get paid. When we arrived at the place, it turned out her boyfriend was out, but she managed to convince the apartment manager to fork out for the cab fare.# This illustrates my point that hookers don’t lie. Here was a young woman who’d gone through a traumatic ordeal, who felt afraid of being injured by a bad date, enough to jump out of a moving car. Some folks would’ve given her free cab ride, and I didn’t expect to get paid. Yet her word was her bond, and she made good on it. Over 27 years, I’ve gotten stiffed by con artists, young punks, lawyers, registered nurses, financial tycoons and even a standing judge. I’ve had to fend off a couple of attempted robberies. But I’ve never gotten the run-around from hookers. If they can’t pay the fare they’ll tell you upfront.# A serial killer stalked Vancouver during the last decades of the 20th-century. He owned a pig farm east of the city. He murdered more than fifty young women, many of whom were runaways from dysfunctional families; many were zonked on drugs of one sort or another. They may’ve taken a few wrong turns, but they were human beings, just trying to survive. The pig farmer found a novel way to dispose of his victims. He’d grind them up with his fodder and feed the mix to his pigs. It made DNA retrieval difficult if not impossible, so the world may never know how many young women he murdered.# In a small way, I wanted to pay homage to the young women who service the sex trade, and especially to the victims of the pig farmer. The main character of “Loose Threads” is Nyssa Persson who spent three years under the thumb of a Tokyo pimp. Nyssa has a feisty nature which is composite of several women I’ve known, including my late wife.# The narrative isn’t about the sex trade; it’s about adjusting to life after rescue where Nyssa is freed from the masquerades of the sex trade. She faces the same dilemmas that brave soldiers face as they return from the battlefields of Afghanistan. It’s not easy to shift from the insanity of war to the petty quietude of normal society. Adrenalin-charged flashbacks of lethal dangers don’t vanish overnight. Nor is it easy to switch from a regimented prisonlike existence to an informal society of extended freedoms.# Nyssa learns it’s possible to live in a thriving society without adverts, without income inequity, without politicians, without a lawyer’s goldmine of rules and regulations. However, she also learns that utopia comes with a price.

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.

Prolific novelist and thinker, Shlomo Kalo, one of the very few Israeli writers nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, has published 80 titles in a variety of genres and themes.
Kalo was born in 1928 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He joined the anti-Fascist underground before reaching his teens and wound up in a concentration camp at the age of 15. After studying medicine and working as a journalist in Prague, and training as a pilot for Mahal, he immigrated to Israel in 1949. He was awarded an MSc in microbiology from Tel Aviv University in 1958. For 26 years and until his retirement, he worked as regional director of medical laboratories.
In 1969, a sharp turn in his life occurred. It subsequently affected his life, his thoughts and his highly prolific literary activity.
Shlomo Kalo wrote 80 titles, some of which were translated and published in 16 countries. He wrote novels, short fiction, literature for younger readers, non-fiction (philosophy, spirituality), a thriller and more. His short stories appeared in probably all literary magazines in Israel and the media often covered his writings and thoughts. Between the years 2006-2014 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Shlomo Kalo died peacefully in his house on 8.30.2014. His last words were: “Everything is excellent for he who is not subjugated”.

Q – So, what makes the Diana Hunter series special?
A – When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that mirrored exactly the kind of books I like to read. My top picks are always mystery novels, especially featuring female protagonists with attitude. Diana is badass and I can’t tell you how many readers tell me she reminds them of themselves. She makes you feel you can do anything!
The Diana Hunter books are a great mix of genres. There is nothing graphic or gratuitous in these books. Your Aunt Martha could definitely read them. But they are not “roses around the cottage door” –type mysteries. They are more hard-boiled with some romantic tension, suspense and thriller action to keep things interesting!
Overall, the Diana Hunter series is designed to keep you turning the pages – and I’ve made sure there’s never a dull moment.
Q – In what order should I read the books?
A – The Diana Hunter mysteries can be read and enjoyed in any order, however, Hunted is a prequel to the other books in the series. Unlike the other books, it is not a complete mystery. It relates the events that create the backdrop to the series and fills in some of Diana’s personality and motivations. You don’t have to have read the prequel to make sense of the later books but it helps.
I’ve made sure not to include any spoilers for those who are new to the characters and any existing fans of Diana’s adventures will still find plenty of fresh action and mystery as well as perhaps a few answers. All in all, there is something for everyone. The events in this prequel take place a few years before Snatched, the first book in the Diana Hunter series of mysteries.
If you do want to read them in order, I’d suggest the following sequence:

– Snatched
– Stolen
– Chopped
Q – So, why should readers give these books a try?
A – Because the Diana Hunter series is a fast, fun, thrill-ride that takes no prisoners! Our heroine is kicks butt but has a soft center. We want her to win out even when she’s making poor decisions and alienating those who can, and want, to help her. I think most women will see a little, or a lot, of themselves in Diana Hunter.
