I was born in a small town in Sweden. I grew up, as people tend to do, formed a range of opinions about this, that and the other, and eventually went to university to study physics. Having finishing my PhD I roamed the world for a few years, eventually settling in the United Kingdom where I now work as a professor of Mathematics.
I have always loved books, of all shapes and sizes, and probably read a bit too much for my own good. Most of the stuff I write can be found in science journals, and tends to be somewhat technical on things like dead stars, black holes and waves of gravity. This made me wonder what it would be like to write a “real” book. Maybe one day I will find out…
In the meantime, I have very much enjoyed writing the (now four) Professor Kompressor books. The inventive Professor was a creation by myself and my daughter – obviously inspired by the many bumbling inventors you will find in kids’ literature. The main difference is that my Professor often draws on actual science for his ideas. He may get it wrong, but this is where the inspiration comes from.
The feedback on these books has been great. It is fantastic to hear that readers actually enjoy enjoy your stories. However silly they may be (no, not the readers…) The third book in the series, Professor Kompressor under cover, was a Silver Award winner in the 2013 Wishing Shelf Independent Book Awards and also runner-up in the Best Children’s Fiction category of the 2013 SpaSpa Awards (also nominated for Best Cover). I don’t mind at all being second best. That will do nicely, thank you very much!

After the houses were lost to foreclosure, Pyerse was prosecuted by the federal government for loan fraud and sentenced to 17 months in Herlong Prison Camp, near the California-Nevada border.
This book recounts Pyerse’s experience inside Herlong and at the halfway house where he was sent to readjust to society. To successfully restart his life, he first had to survive the pettiness, dehumanization, and psychological bondage of the prison camp. Then he had to overcome his own personal emotional challenges, and somehow use the exclusion from family and friends to his advantage.
Though prison camp is considered to be easy prison time, any wrong move could result in his transfer to a much harsher prison and the extension of his sentence either of which could scar him for life.

believe it was my first boyfriend who told me, “You think funny.” He’s also the one who said, “You think too much.” He was right about the first pronouncement, but I didn’t think too much of him after the second one. Well, yeah, I do think funny. Can’t help it. Wired that way. No matter how dire the situation or how depressed I get there have only been a few times in my life when my mind hasn’t seen the humor in my plights.
I’m the one who has to bury her face in her memorial program at a funeral because I realize that the dearly departed has daisies in the bouquet covering her hands, and she was allergic. Will she sneeze, I wonder as I try to suppress a snicker without much success. My mind conjures up a picture of 91-year-old Aunt Helen sitting up and asking for a tissue, as mourners faint onto the folding chairs like toppling dominoes. I start giggling uncontrollably as I add in the funeral director and his minions racing around in their black and white funeral garb like hysterical penguins trying to catch the fainters and restore order.
Painful medical procedures, embarrassing moments with toddlers, tweens, and teenagers? Times when my nearest and dearest try my patience beyond endurance, or I try theirs, and they let me know? It’s all a lot easier to bear if I can see the funny side, and there almost always is one.
Like Erma Bombeck, I mention a few times that my family is driving me crazy. But I go on to say that I know that I drive them crazy too. I don’t mind telling my readers that I love my family and friends and think they’re awesome. I’m not big on f-bombs in my writing or real life unless I drop something really heavy on an appendage. In my book, that’s what f-bombs are for.
Most of the writing in my first three books came from the years that we unschooled. A few people have asked me if I’ll still write now that both of my kids are in college and mostly out of the house. (One wonders if they’ve forgotten that I’ve also had Geekdaddy to write about for 36 years. He hasn’t moved out. Yet.)
Yes, I’ll still write, because I’m a writer. I’m also as curious as a barnful of cats. From plotting polecats to why you shouldn’t pet an armadillo without gloves on, there are so many eclectic subjects that attract my interest. My kids are launched, but my writing spark isn’t quenched, and I’m not ready to sink into geezerdom. Crow’s Feet and Magpie Mind, that’s me. Coincidentally, that’s the name of the book I’m working on now.

Mae Schick is a former English language teacher and language school owner who has written extensively her entire life. She was raised in Montana, and although the Homestead Acts came to a halt before she was born, she grew up among “ancients” who had a part in the fascinating era of the settling of the West.
Her first book was 53 Bears, a series of vignettes from her early childhood to her college years, two of which have been published in Montana anthologies. Her novel Lila, and her short stories about women homesteaders were inspired by the relatively unheralded experiences of strong women finding ways to become self-reliant in the American West.
