So, here’s what you probably need to know about me. I love books. I love reading. Since the age of about 11, it has been my life’s dream to write a book one day. For a long time this notion of writing a book simply lay dormant in the back of my mind. I grew up, went to university, met the love of my life, and started my family. Then BAM! Suddenly it turned into an annoying voice in my head that would not leave me alone! Then the real struggle began. Because, you see, writing a book is, let’s say, a bit of a challenge, and it took me a long time. Yes, I had visions of just tapping away at the computer when my kids were little and producing best seller after best seller. (Excuse me for a moment while I have a little laughing fit over here!)
But it didn’t exactly turn out that way. In the fifteen years that followed, my actual children got older and started school, and I had a couple of different full time jobs, all the while trying to plan how I was going to write this book in my non-existent spare time. Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen.
Finally, in 2012, my husband and I decided that we needed a break from the two parent working family rollercoaster for a while and agreed that I would be a stay at home mum and also write this book (or die trying). And I did it!!!!! I actually finally did it. The following two years then became about deciding what to do with said novel and what to do with myself now that I had achieved my dream. I joined a local writing group where I learned about self-publishing. It was the perfect solution to my problem: A way of sharing my book with the world and also feeling a sense of completion which I wouldn’t have gained from sliding my manuscript under the bed. (Seeing my own book on the bookshelf was pretty awesome too!!)
My book, Harriet Greer Grows Up, is now published in two parts, both of which are available on Amazon. The main character, Harriet, also struggles to follow her dream but she has a little bit of spiritual help to steer her in the right direction, whether she likes it or not!

The Garden of Allah was a famous apartment complex in West Hollywood, California, on Sunset Boulevard between Crescent Heights and Havenhurst, at the east end of the Sunset Strip. Although built in a Spanish-Moorish style of architecture, its name did not stem from Islam but from stage and screen actress Alla Nazimova, the original owner. She had built her private home there, and at the end of her film career built the complex around it. She went bankrupt, however, and sold the property, but continued to live in one of the villas on the grounds. The Garden of Allah became home to many celebrities and literary figures. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived there for several months in 1937-38 at the beginning of his final sojourn in Hollywood. (He wrote himself a postcard while there: “Dear Scott — How are you? Have been meaning to come in and see you. I have been living at the Garden of Allah. Yours, Scott Fitzgerald.”) Humorist/actor Robert Benchley was a frequent resident. In spite of the fact that it was among the landmark buildings of the west side of Los Angeles, it was torn down in June 1959 and replaced by a bank. The 1970 song “Big Yellow Taxi” by joni Mitchell includes the line , “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot” refers to the destruction of the Garden of Allah.

Mae Schick is a former English language teacher and language school owner who has written extensively her entire life. She was raised in Montana, and although the Homestead Acts came to a halt before she was born, she grew up among “ancients” who had a part in the fascinating era of the settling of the West.
Her first book was 53 Bears, a series of vignettes from her early childhood to her college years, two of which have been published in Montana anthologies. Her novel Lila, and her short stories about women homesteaders were inspired by the relatively unheralded experiences of strong women finding ways to become self-reliant in the American West. Many of her characters are drawn from the written histories of these women, and conversations she has had growing up in a community of mostly elderly people, some whom were raised on homesteads, including her parents.
Her characters start off in difficulty, dissatisfaction, or in feeling unfulfilled. Circumstances compel them to leave what is familiar and move out West. At the heart of her stories are women facing new challenges, making life-changing choices, and forging relationships.
