Interview with PJ McDermott
Q. What prompted you to write a young adult scifi fantasy adventure?
The idea for the trilogy came from a news report on the discovery of a tomb in Jerusalem that some thought to contain the remains of Christ and his family. (This was later discredited.)
I began to hypothesize on what the tomb might have contained, and the story came alive on the page.
I love writing scifi fantasy for teens and young adults. The Prosperine Trilogy blends many elements of religion science fiction and fantasy, and includes a quest to defeat evil, terrifying creatures, an epic journey, and gigantic battle scenes. You don’t need to read the Second Coming to enjoy the following stories, but it provides a historical foundation for Hickory’s adventures, and is in itself an absorbing short read.
Q. What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I’m fascinated by world building, whether on Earth or alien planets. It’s the perfect vehicle for expressing my creativity as a writer.Avanaux takes place in Earth’s post-apocalyptic future, while The Second Coming is more about events leading up to the near extinction of life on Earth.
Q. What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Without an audience for my work, what is the point? The more fans I have, the better I’ll write.
Q. What are you working on next?
The first two books in my space adventure trilogy (Avanaux, and Rise of the Erlachi) have been published. I’m now working on part 3, a blockbuster conclusion which will be released mid-2016.
Q. Who are your favorite authors?
Not an easy question to answer. There are so many! I enjoy reading all kinds of science fiction. As a schoolboy, I read sci-fi morning, noon and night. I think the traditional authors such as Asimov, H.G. Wells, Herbert, Niven, Moorcock and Le Guin had the most influence on my writing.

He was soon led to the last sanctuary unaffected by the black liquid, the library. He noticed that the book that he borrowed had suddenly returned here. Without a single thought, he carelessly approached it and the black liquid oozed out from it. He was swallowed by the liquid and he was forcibly thrown into an alternate world where everything was out to kill him.
In this new world, he once again heard about the wish granting king and how this was all setup to be a game for his entertainment. He realized that he didn’t have much of a choice but to join in this mad game of life and death.
He first encountered Lucile, the man who claimed to be a guide for this world. With his help, B was able to arm himself against the terrors that lurks in this world.

The belief in reincarnation is behind the ceremony, and Davis starts to suspect that it is also the reason behind the stealing. According to the Haida beliefs, the soul of the deceased is transported by a canoe to the Land of the Souls, where it awaits reincarnation.
As it turned out, Chenoa stole the artifacts to use them for her father’s burial ceremony. She is determined to take back everything that ever belonged to her tribe and people, and is even ready to commit a crime in order to do so. Davis and Wood easily find out who stands behind the robbery, and give them a chance to do the right thing. Chenoa and her friends return the artifacts back, and the detective keeps his word and doesn’t arrest them.
