How can a mother abandon her children?

Kadashan was given his birth name by his grandmother who named him after her father, John Kadashan, a clan leader from Wrangell, located on the southern end of the southeast panhandle of Alaska. The elder Kadashan, as a young man, was one of the guides to world traveler and naturalist, John Muir. In his elder years he was known as a “peace-maker” among his native peoples.
Kadashan means “red tide coming.” In Alaska where Kadashan lives when a red tide comes into the bays it is a warning that a poisonous toxin will invade the shoreline and in turn enter into shell fish. It is during this time that people should not eat shell fish because it will cause immediate death. When the red tide is gone the warning ends and the sea food is safe to eat again. Kadashan really believes his political commentaries are warnings that we should take very seriously.
Kadashan began writing when he was in college. He was encouraged to by his creative writing instructor, who recognized his passion for story-telling. Twenty years later his retired teacher and college mentor visited him, read the stories he had stored in a drawer, and persuaded him to find a publisher. In time his rejection slips were thicker than his manuscripts. Eventually, he was discovered by the publisher of the Alaska Native Magazine who began to feature his short stories and his water color paintings that illustrated his stories. Yaakwdaat Aya is now published as a short story collection.
Shortly after, he began writing essays for the Tundra Times, a statewide Alaska Native newspaper. His commentaries dealt with Indian politics and tribal governments. Eventually he was under contract with the Juneau Empire and wrote a monthly column for the Capital city’s statewide newspaper. He tweaked these essays and self-published The Laws of Nature and Nature’s God.

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.

Until my husband died on Christmas 2012, I never thought about becoming a writer. In fact, the act of writing a story terrified me. And writing dialogue scared the bejeebers out of me. Don’t get me wrong, I loved reading, just never had the knack for writing. See, Bob was the writer. He wrote stories for years but could never get a traditional publisher to even read one of his unpolished manualscripts/outlines. Then, after 30 years together, Bob passed away and my life was turned upside down.
About a month later, I was sitting around my apartment, trying to adjust to the worst event in my life, when a little voice spoke to me. Why not publish Bob’s stories? To be truthful, ever since the advent of self-publishing, I always wanted too, that’s how much I believed in his stories. But I knew I would have to fight him for every little change I made to his outlines. Sorry, honey, but they have to be done.
So, I pulled out the box of stories, dusted them off, and started on a new adventure: The World of Self-Publishing. Boy, did I have a lot to learn. I finally published several short stories early in 2014, then my horror novella, It Lives in the Basement. While I was working on them, I was slowly learning the craft of writing, and getting The Secret of Excalibur ready for publication. Excalibur was my favorite story of them all, and in the back of my mind, I knew I wanted a publisher. One day on Twitter, I ran across a tweet from Creativia Publishing, and that was another game changer for me. I signed up with them in December of 2014, and it was the best decision I’ve made.

He was known for having one of the best ‘eyes’ in the field. That means, he could pick a gem out of a pile of junk and he collected only the best for himself and for the museum. Dad acquired 90% of the collection at the Toledo Museum of Art. And the museum is one of the most highly regarded museums in the world. Surprising, I know, but true. I was surrounded by great art at home and the museum was a second home for me. I knew great art. And my stuff wasn’t great.Making art was a challenge for me. It took me years to finally get to the point of not judging my work and comparing it to masterpieces. My yardstick became something else. I asked – Do I like it? That’s all. Do I like it?We have framed art in our home that I created that I would have thrown away because I didn’t like it. I eventually learned to ask Suzanne if she liked it before I tossed it or turned it over to paint on the other side.When I went back to Toledo for my mother’s memorial service, I arrived early so I could spend some time in the parks and enjoy the landscape of the region. (As my parents had moved to California, I hadn’t been back to my hometown in 14 years.)I spent time in the woods and meadows that my mother had introduced me to and that had become such a fundamental joy in my life – a place for flow for me. I found an archetypal soybean field and stood by the road and painted it. I completed the painting with my limited travel pallet at the kitchen table and by the day of the service all that love and grief found a place in the painting. Flow heals grief by the way.So, why tell you the story? Here’s why. Two things.One, Dad liked the painting. He genuinely liked it. It had captured the landscape of Ohio that he loved and the season of fall, the season he enjoyed the most in Ohio.This was the first acknowledgement and approval for my art that I had ever received from him and it came at a good time. I was 50 years old.Two, painting kept me in flow for hours. It kept me in the present. It allowed me to hold all the losses more easily and to be present for others, including my father.
