I was born in 1964. I was not pleased with the experience; I rather think I cried quite a lot. The youngest of six children I can only assume that my Catholic parents stopped procreating when they reached perfection with me. My youth was filled with wonder and adventure as I roamed the woods of a rustic little hamlet by the name of Spanish Lake. From time to time, I even managed to apply myself at schoolwork just enough to advance to the next grade.
Life was carefree in those days. Summers were spent outside, where they should be. When not camping and canoeing with the family, I was up at nine and out the door not to be seen again until the church bell tolled its last at noon. Lunch, and a nap (eck, what a waste of time) and then back out the door until Father came home from work.
Hippies were strange looking oldsters who smelt funny. Civil rights was the struggle to stay up past nine o’clock and Nixon only surfaced at Halloween. The Vietnam war was a game me and my pals played while roaming the neighborhood. Little did I know just how relevant that war would become to me later in life. However, for now it was all tree houses, underground forts and bicycles.
Then came the first of many broken bones. A hill– the hill– beckoned me. Never one to obey rules or follow basic tenets of common sense, I set out to conquer the monstrosity. Me, gravity and a bike with no breaks. You can guess the rest. It was awesome, right up to the moment it wasn’t. A broken arm and fractured skull pretty much put me out of action for the rest of the summer.
To follow up such an epic conquest, the next summer I again set out to plant my feet firmly on the mountain of childhood adventure. I leaped feet first into the fire. Well, river actually. Onto a sandbar to be exact. Landed wrong and broke my leg. Another summer wasted away. Or so I thought.
Two things happened to me that tragic summer which would change my life forever. The first was zombies. Thanks to a disobedient older brother and the magic of drive-in theaters, I discovered zombies at the tender age of nine. And books.
A Charlie Brown book sent me down the slippery slope of reading. It was called Happiness is. I don’t remember how old I was, but I had measles or something and was stuck in my room. I of course resisted the temptation to read more. Sure, it was fun, but having tried it I was ready to move on. I was too smart to get involved with such foolishness. The broken leg changed my life. I read all the Charlie stuff, and then went onto harder books like Curious George. My sister turned me onto the Golden Books for Kids collection and I was hooked. Before I knew it, I was in Middle-Earth and so addicted to reading I couldn’t stop. Soon I was doing a book a day, sometimes more. My friends didn’t understand. They were all like, “Dude, you have a problem.” I didn’t care, I needed the books. I tried to clean up my act. Get straight, you know. Watch TV and stuff like normal kids. But I couldn’t, I needed the high too much.
Having graduated high school with literally the lowest satisfactory grades allowed by law, I embarked on a twelve-year quest for higher education. I must admit I attacked this with a little less gusto than I had with high school. During this time I worked on my first book. A convoluted little tale called The Emerald Tower.
Life intruded, and I set aside such things as I worked my way up the corporate ladder attaining the zombie-esque position of VP at the tender age of thirty-six. In 1992, I met my future wife, Minhdu Nguyen from Vietnam. A feisty little fireball it didn’t take long until we married. Three sons later, I had but one conquest left to make.
Alcoholism. Licked it 2008, haven’t had a drink since. Funny thing happened after the fog lifted. I remembered my passion for writing. In 2015, I finished my first book in a series called Second Dead.
I was born in 1964. The youngest of six children I can only assume that my Catholic parents stopped procreating when they reached perfection with me. My youth was filled with wonder and adventure as I roamed the woods of a rustic little hamlet by the name of Spanish Lake. From time to time, I even managed to apply myself at schoolwork just enough to advance to the next grade.
Then came the first of many broken bones. A hill– the hill– beckoned me. Never one to obey rules or follow basic tenets of common sense, I set out to conquer the monstrosity. Me, gravity and a bike with no breaks. You can guess the rest. It was awesome, right up to the moment it wasn’t. A broken arm and fractured skull pretty much put me out of action for the rest of the summer.
To follow up such an epic conquest, the next summer I again set out to plant my feet firmly on the mountain of childhood adventure. I leaped feet first into the fire. Well, river actually. Onto a sandbar to be exact. Landed wrong and broke my leg. Another summer wasted away. Or so I thought.
Two things happened to me that tragic summer which would change my life forever. The first was zombies. Thanks to a disobedient older brother and the magic of drive-in theaters, I discovered zombies at the tender age of nine. And books.

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.

Driving a twelve cylinder Ferrari at 175mph was intoxicating – excitement beyond description. I did not roll that one. The more expensive the car, the more exciting the experience. I married my mailman – ahh, change that to mailwoman. Of course, I had to play the jerk for 15 years while dating her – and others. I had to be sure, right? Well, that’s what I told her. She labeled them my “jerk years”. What she saw in me, till this day, I’ll never understand. Like the time we vacationed in Italy at a local shop that featured silk products, I encouraged her to choose a silk scarf for a girlfriend of mine back home in California. What was I thinking? Living in Charleston, SC unveiled the new me. I discovered books. Other than flipping the pages of “Car and Driver” and the “TV Guide”, I developed a ravenous appetite for the metaphysical. That which could not be explained by empirical evidence piqued my curiosity and enthusiasm. Through the inspiration of a spiritual medium, my life as a jerk slowly drifted toward the gent. He predicted that I would write a book, “Because my soul had something to say.” My wife and I live on a mini horse farm in western NC. I do not enjoy the farming life: mowing, mucking, and mending.
