Nick Boyland grew up on a British army Garrison in Western Germany. He restored and built his first motorcycle at the tender age of 16; a Triumph tiger Cub. Years ago I lived in Rochester, NY, which has a park with hundreds of Lilac bushes. Each spring there is a Lilac Festival, usually during the peak blooming season for the majority of the bushes. There are some that bloom ahead of the rest, and some late blooming, but since I lived in the area, I could photograph all the Lilacs at their peaks.
I got my love of lilacs from my Grandmother, who had a beautiful, large lilac bush in front of her country farmhouse. Every Spring when we visited her the smell of lilacs floated in the air and through the open windows into the house. It was tall enough to shade part of the yard where I would sit and read.
After photographing the Lilacs for years, I started to realize that I wanted to know more about them, what they actually were. After that I started photographing not only the bushes but also the tags and signs around them so that I could accurately identify the specific varieties.
All identifications were made from tags attached to the lilac bushes as they were photographed. Any bush without a tag is not included in this book.

Buddha Beach (also known as Buddha’s Garden) is an area in the shadow of Cathedral Rock along Oak Creek in Sedona, Arizona. It is accessed via Cresent Moon Ranch which is managed by the Forest Service. As you exit the back of the park you will find a path that takes you along Oak Creek. As you walk down this peaceful path you will see people in the creek, people sitting in the shallow water or on the banks.
The photographs in this book are unique. As a result of fires the summer of 2014 and extreme storms, many of the rock cairns in this book were destroyed. In their place are new ones, but the cairns in this book mostly do not exist. I went back after the fires and storms and was saddened to see so many gone, yet heartened to see so many new and different ones in their place. Truly a living meditation garden of rocks.
Then you round a bend and see rock cairns, just a few to begin with. Then you see what appears to be a sentinel guarding the path.
When you head farther down the trail, you start to see more rock cairns, which here are called Buddhas.
As you look closer you will see the Buddhas are all unique, some are whimsical, some are complex. There are small ones and there are large ones, some you have no idea how they are balanced.
I invite you to enjoy this book filled with the rock Buddhas paired with quotes from Buddha. The first time I walked through the area it was what immediately came to my mind. Peace and serenity.

Even though I grew up in the city, my grandparents had a huge farmhouse with lots of gardens. Our yard in the city was nice refuge from city life. Then as a mom and owner of my own home I had a rose garden along the front of my ranch style suburban house, extending down the sidewalk to great visitors.

When I was still in elementary school I carried around a little notebook which I would write my observations in pretending like I was Miss Jane Marple or Jessica Fletcher, hoping that I would uncover some deep mystery and scandal everywhere I went. The only mystery rose was of my family who thought it strange that their 10 year old son was pretending to be a 70 year old British lady with a fondness for gardening and murder. People thought I would grow out of it, but 20 years later and I’m a bestselling mystery author. My friends, well, they still think of me as that 70 year old spinster. I’m okay with that!
As an LGBT youth life wasn’t easy, but I’m grateful for what I had and I don’t complain. After I came out I had a difficult falling out with my family. Sometimes nearly a year would pass before we spoke to each other but since those days we’ve rekindled and now we’re as close as ever. Life is strange that way, and people really do change.
I used to be a picky eater, but I had a fondness for traveling. People would always ask, “If you only eat cheeseburgers and pizza, how do you expect to survive in another country?” Well they got me there. The first time I tried sushi was in Santa Barbara, California and I loved it. I was 18. How many other wonderfully awesome things have I missed out on? Now there isn’t a food I won’t try. Squid in ink, pan-fried tarantula legs, even once a cayenne and cricket pizza! (Watch out Andrew Zimmern)!
Though I’ve only traveled a few places, I’m confident that there isn’t a foreign cuisine I’d turn away. If you are reading this Travel Channel, I’m available for my own adventure series! Tonight though nothing exotic on the menu. Grilled ham and cheese with tomato soup (Ahh I love rainy days)!
The best advice I can give someone is read more mysteries, horror, and stop being so pessimistic!

Years ago I lived in Rochester, NY, which has a park with hundreds of Lilac bushes. Each spring there is a Lilac Festival, usually during the peak blooming season for the majority of the bushes. There are some that bloom ahead of the rest, and some late blooming, but since I lived in the area, I could photograph all the Lilacs at their peaks.
I got my love of lilacs from my Grandmother, who had a beautiful, large lilac bush in front of her country farmhouse. Every Spring when we visited her the smell of lilacs floated in the air and through the open windows into the house. It was tall enough to shade part of the yard where I would sit and read.
After photographing the Lilacs for years, I started to realize that I wanted to know more about them, what they actually were. After that I started photographing not only the bushes but also the tags and signs around them so that I could accurately identify the specific varieties.
All identifications were made from tags attached to the lilac bushes as they were photographed. Any bush without a tag is not included in this book.

Q: How is Dead Like Me different from other mysteries?
A: I don’t just tell the story, I shed light on what’s going on in in the main character’s head. What Kate’s feeling and why those feelings lead her down the path she takes. Mysteries today are full of great plot twists but as a voracious reader of this genre, I’ve always wanted my favorite authors to get into the head of their characters more. So I wrote the book I’ve always wanted to read.
Q: Do you have plans for writing another Detective Kate Springer novel?
A: The second Detective Kate Springer book, Deadly Fantasies, came out in December 2013. In the first book, Kate is required to see a shrink when she’s involved in a shooting. Kate and Dr. Nina Grace form a strong bond that I further explore in the second book. When Dr. Grace calls Kate in the middle of the night stating, “I think I just killed my husband,” Kate investigates the case. She fights to clear Dr. Grace’s name, knowing in her gut that the woman couldn’t possibly be capable of the horrific murder of her own husband.
Q: Why should readers give these books a try?
A: Because I write detective novels with as much emotion as fast-paced plot. The Detective Kate Springer Series will take you on a roller coaster ride refusing to let go even after you cry “uncle!”

Jenny Twist was born in York and brought up in the West Yorkshire mill town of Heckmondwike, the eldest grandchild of a huge extended family.
