Ever since I was a very young boy I have been curious about the ways of other people. There seemed to be so many different cultures, traditions and wonderful foods. A multitude of faiths had been carried over from many homelands. I wanted to see all that I could see.
The Southside of Chicago was such a large melting pot with so many languages and dialects. As you wandered its streets and neighborhoods, the cultures and ethnicities created a virtual world tour. You could “visit” Italy, Ireland, England, Scotland, Germany, Poland, Russia, Africa, Scandinavia—and who could forget Chinatown? You name it, we had it!
As you turn these pages you will witness no brutal murders, no felonious violence, no rapes, no torrid bedroom scenes. The language would rate a PG13 at worst. There will be one unsolved mystery. At least I have never solved it. If you will take this walk with me, I promise to take you to places you’ll not soon forget. You’ll meet some wonderful folks. This is simply a story of a young boy growing up on Chicago’s Southside, a typical blue-collar working class neighborhood of those times. It’s a book of true-life experiences. It was a wonderful time in our history and, in my opinion, the greatest place on earth. It was the perfect environment for a young boy to grow to manhood. Come along, walk with me!

He was always full of practical physics information. “Inertia,” he said one day, “is what keeps your head flying forwards when the car suddenly stops.” On our final day of class, he helped us work out the formula to calculate the acceleration that would be needed by a superhero to overcome gravity and fly around the Earth in a nice smooth orbit.
When I began teaching science to teenagers, I quickly learned that teens have a special way of letting aspiring teachers know how successful they are in grabbing and stimulating their interest: it’s called the spitball rating, and it has been remarkably effective in pushing me to be a better teacher. Physics, Chemistry, English, Philosophy and History were boring on their own, I was told, so I mixed them together. The spitball rating was pretty good. I continued.
About Come Running When I Call:
Nine-year- old Kim McLaughlin is taken by her Mother (Gloria) down to the Brown’s to see a newborn foal named Trixie. While the adults don’t notice that this foal is unique, Kim realizes right off that she is the most beautiful and special horse in the whole world.
Kim is determined to buy Trixie because she knows how extraordinary the foal is. She starts saving her change. She finds odd jobs and works as much as she can. She saves all her birthday money because it has to be used for something exceptional like buying Trixie.
On Easter morning, 1980, her Dad (Evans) drives them down to the Brown’s where Woody Brown gives Trixie to Kim. After that, she spends as much time as she can with Trixie even managing to convince her Mom to let her go down alone to brush Trixie in the pasture.
Gloria pays Charlie Hussey to show Kim how to lunge (circle on a long rope) Trixie. By lunging Trixie daily, Kim teaches her word commands.
Gloria buys a horse named Stormy who is half-starved. He attacks Kim one day and Trixie defends her. Gloria sells Stormy. She is given another horse named Sheba who kicks at Kim. Trixie darts forward and takes the kick saving Kim from possible broken bones. Kim starts riding her. Their first rides are watched by Gloria, but they’re soon allowed to ride unsupervised.
Kim boards Trixie down to D+M Quarter Horse because she can pay for Trixie’s board by cleaning stalls. She is pastured with a herd of horses in a field that extends to the Saco River where she steps through an eroded overhang beside the river and lames herself badly. By the following morning, she can’t put any weight on two of her legs. Jane Allen trailers her to the vet clinic for Kim. Jane thinks Trixie has fractured a bone and will have to be put down. Luckily, she only over-stressed some tendons and ligaments. Jane trailers her to Kim’s home so she can heal up in her small turn-out paddock.
Evans becomes more unstable as time goes by. He goes into rages for no reason and Kim spends her time hiding with Trixie. Kim’s parents buy a new piece of property and begin building a house. Gloria gets sick and Evans refuses to bring her to the hospital. She ends up being taken to the hospital by her Aunt. Kim’s brother Ev goes away to college, but has to return during breaks to work for their father. Evans is careless on a well drilling job and breaks Ev’s arm. He then has an affair with a girl two years younger than Kim. Her parents separate and her father begins an intimidation campaign so Gloria will be too afraid to ask for anything in the divorce.
Kim has to give Trixie away because her father threatens to have a hunting accident and shoot her. The divorce is finalized but Evans keeps up the intimidation because he has grown to like it. Kim and her father have a final showdown where she yells repeatedly at him to “Pull the gun!” that he constantly carries. “This ends today!” she yells. Evans backs down and never carries a gun over to Gloria’s house again.
Kim gets Trixie back. She decides she wants a foal out of her and finds a good stallion. But Trixie is ripped open during breeding, gets an infection in her abdominal cavity, and nearly dies. She pulls through and Kim gives up on the idea of a foal.
Kim buys a house, repairs a dilapidated barn, weeds and seeds a pasture, and moves Trixie in. She chases deer out of her pasture, unhooks her gate to go visit the neighbors, and tries to figure out how to open the house door. Just shy of her twenty sixth birthday Trixie gets colic. Kim has to have her put down to end her pain. For months afterwards Kim has a hard time sleeping, adjusting, and living without her until she realizes that Trixie has become a part of her. The lessons she learned from her will continue to influence and shape her life and through her the life’s of others.

Q – So, what makes the Inspector David Graham series special?
A – When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that played like a movie in the reader’s mind. They are books with action, but also soul. They are ensemble pieces containing regular characters that are well drawn with strong personalities, humor and some tragedy. The Inspector David Graham books feel, to me, like good friends that never let me down. Every time we sit down to plan the books, I love to find out what the characters are going to get up to next!
The Inspector David Graham books are a great mix of genres. They sit firmly in the cozy mystery category and are set on the beautiful island of Jersey in the English Channel between Britain and France. They feature a British detective who is part-Sherlock Holmes, part-Poirot, and, of course, uniquely himself.
Q – In what order should I read the books?

Kadashan began writing when he was in college. He was encouraged to by his creative writing instructor, who recognized his passion for story-telling. Twenty years later his retired teacher and college mentor visited him, read the stories he had stored in a drawer, and persuaded him to find a publisher. In time his rejection slips were thicker than his manuscripts.
