Between the covers of this book are a collection of stories about a small village in southeastern Alaska where Native American Tlingits live. These stories are about a community with many trials and tribulations which are in abundance and the likes of which can be found in any part of the world. The author, Kadashan, describes an ever changing lifestyle that Tlingit people struggle with today. His stories are also illustrated with his own water color painting. This was a time when the Alaska Natives were transferring from a very reliable subsistence lifestyle to a cash economy. This was a very perplexing transition and D. Longenbough, writing for the Juneau Empire, put it this way, “Western society has thrown hard choices at Alaska Native children and their parents. The author makes us realize just what they’ve given up for us.”

Ted Strader visited Yakutat and bought this book. Rosita Worl is a Tlingit Research Anthropologist and is familiar with the community of Yakutat. Her roots come from that area and her comment about Kadashan’s work is very complimentary, “Your writings are a true credit to Yakutat and your people,” she said.
His purpose is not only to entertain but to inform. German born Michael Gorch did his masters dissertation paper using Kadashan’s novel, When Raven Cries, and makes this observation: “Because of his Tlingit heritage Kadashan is strongly influenced by traditional oral narratives,”
Fredericka de Laguna is a renowned anthropologist and author of a three volume books called Under Mount Saint Elias; she spent several years in Yakutat in the early 1950’s recording stories, language, history and culture about the Tlingits from that area. In one of her communications with Kadashan she complimented him about his writings in a simple and a short forward manner: “Your scheme for writing about facts in the form of fiction is a good one.”

Even though he might have a smidgen of Swedish in him my father, Kadashan, is a Tlingit Indian to the core.
Even though he now lives in Yakutat, Kadashan has roots that come from Sitka and Wrangell. His grandmother named him after her father, John Kadashan, from Wrangell. He was born in Sitka. That’s where his mother met his father while they were attending Sheldon Jackson Boarding School.
When he was six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. About a year later she remarried, however the marriage did not last; it was through this union that I was born. About a year later, his mother moved to Yakutat. Here she married our future step-father.
The name Kadashan was given to him by his paternal grandmother. She named him after her father, John Kadashan, who later in his life, was a clan chief from Wrangell. Kadashan means “red tide coming.”
Kadashan’s formal education was received in Yakutat. His high school years were split between Holland High School in Holland, Michigan, and Mount Edgecumbe High School, a boarding school for Native Alaskans near Sitka, Alaska. His undergraduate work was obtained from Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, and later at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
As a youngster Kadashan learned from a Tlingit Indian friend, Peter Harry, how to express himself with oil colors. “He started me with oils,” he explains. “When I was in high school I started water colors.” His short stories have been published in the Alaska Native Magazine (ANM) and the Horizons Magazine. The ANM has used his water colors to illustrate his stories. The second printing of these stories are reproductions in black and white of his paintings. He has also written for the Alaska Magazine and the Alaskan Southeaster Magazine, and for about six years wrote a monthly column for the Juneau Empire.
His stories are local color. He takes a slice of life from the lifestyle, culture, history and tradition of the Tlingit people from his community, develops a plot and composites of characters from the village. To inform and entertain are the objectives for his writings and about the Tlingit Indians of Yakutat.
He is a retired commercial fisherman and is presently working on more books.
The poem in the beginning of this book was written by our mother when she was a teenager. She wrote many poems during those years. This poem, along with three others, was found among her possessions after her death; they were scribbled in a small, faded, note book.
The first printing of This Is Yakutat was published in 1992.
There are a few things Kadashan learned while trying to become a writer:
Number one is to read a lot. Read everything so you can overflow the filing cabinet of your mind with a myriad of information.
Second is to read creatively. He believes a writer deliberately leaves things out of his work so the reader can fill in the blanks.
Third, learn to get more out of a book than what is really in it.
Finally, all writers look for truth. It is through the process of reading a lot, reading creatively, and getting more out of a book than is really in it that writers come to an understanding of what truth might be. Once he or she discovers truth then, he believes, they have an obligation to share it with the world.

These chapters also tell about sordid goings on that have nothing to do with the movie in what has been a peaceful, prosperous, exurban community.
“The Opinionists” examines American freedom and American creativity. In addition, it explores a theme that often recurs in my stories — that people who follow up on a determination to do good, to make the world better, to reform it usually pay a heavy price and walk a solitary, rocky path. If they persist, despite obstacles and their own shortcomings, and if they are willing to accept the burdens their missions impose on them, they often succeed in making their point..The Christian faith is another underlying motif in the story.

Every once in a while I am blessed to have read so many great books and use so many great products that I press forward to experience the next without taking the time to review them immediately. That was the case with Doctor Lawrence W. Gold’s book “The Plague Within.”
This is a book about people who are truly ingenious and on the front edge of medical technology that will change the course of humanity. It is also a book about egos that are bigger than life.
Life saving discoveries are discovered and pushed before their time and accelerated to limits much too soon to safely evaluate their side effects on human beings.
Jack Byrnes, Medical Director at Berkeley Brier Hospital ICU and his wife Beth, the head ICU nurse are concerned with their Patient Rachel Palmer and are excited with technology that has helped her recover at a rapid, unheard of rate.
Greed, egos, overconfidence and shortcuts give way to reality and create an unnecessary catastrophe that makes for a believable stress filled and haunting suspense novel that I had trouble putting down.
Who, if anyone will come forward to report unethical harmful experiments and applications that could result in unnecessary procedures that will claimed the lives of unexpected victims and threaten more.
The Plague Within is an intriguing, breathtaking story written by a medical doctor who leaves the reader wondering if this set of circumstances could or will happen in the stage of human need to play God.
This author’s writing skills and ability to tell a believable fast-paced storyline kept me on the edge of my chair frantically flipping pages from the beginning to the very end. My best guess is that you will do so too.
If you are entertained by medical suspense thrillers, you will be happy to know that THIS IS IT!
Even in the age of the genome and sophisticated biotechnology, medical progress still moves at a snail’s pace. Seasoned investigators are matured by experience and they accept the virtue of the too-slow scientific process. The young, however have been brought up in a world of instant gratification, and they barrel ahead never looking back to see the havoc in their wake.
So it is with Dr. Harmony Lane. In her single-minded obsession to cure her patients, she cuts corners and treats a desperately ill woman with an experimental viral vector provided by an unscrupulous research scientist. While he shares her impatience, he cares nothing for her humanistic sensibilities. She uses a similar vector on her patients with autoimmune diseases.
While the vector has remarkable curative properties, it soon becomes clear that it has devastating and lethal side effects.
The race is on to cure or at least control the vector before it kills again.
The novel proves, once again, that “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.

I was born in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, moved to Queens, and then, as New Yorkers say, we ascended to the Island.
After graduating from Valley Stream Central High School, I went to Adelphi, a college then, a university now, and then to medical school in Chicago.
The war in Vietnam interrupted my postgraduate training with a year in Colorado Springs and another as a Battalion Surgeon in Vietnam. I spent seven months in the Central Highlands with the 4th Infantry and five months in an evacuation hospital in Long Binh outside Saigon where I ran the emergency room.
I returned intact in 1968 to complete my training in internal medicine and diseases of the kidney, nephrology.
I worked for twenty-three years in Berkeley, California in a hospital-based practice caring for patients with complicated illnesses often in ICU and served as Chief of Medicine.
My wife Dorlis and I retired in October 1995 and sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge for a life at sea in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Four years later, exhausted from repairing everything on board, (often many times) we sold the sailboat and within a year took the lazy man’s out; we bought a Nordic Tug, a trawler. We motored around Florida, the Bahamas, the entire East Coast and completed two ‘Circle trips’ to Canada and back, eight months, the first time, five months, the second.
I wrote professionally as a physician to inform but rarely to entertain, at least not on purpose.
First, Do No Harm was published in April 2007. No Cure for Murder was released in August 2011. For the Love of God was published in January 2012 and The Sixth Sense in July 2012.
In the last two years, I’ve written three screenplays based on my novels and hope to see one or more produced for the screen. I submitted my screenplay, Rage to the 80th Annual Writer’s Digest contest and won honorable mention (57 out of 11,000).
We live in beautiful Grass Valley with 13 year old Mike, a terrier mix and Bennie, a 7 year old purebred though enormous Yorkie.

Meet Vanessa Olsen, proud eBook author residing in Waterloo, Ontario with her affectionate cat, Nellie. She graduated from Ryerson’s prestigious School of Nursing in the spring of 2010 and now works as a sports nutritionist. As a child, Vanessa was known in her hometown of Gilford, Ontario for growing her own veggies in the backyard and captaining many different sports teams. It is no wonder she grew up to be the health nut she is while helping others with her health nut knowledge.
Her job requires patience and a lot of research. Every work day, Vanessa educates athletes on different areas of diet, nutrition, and exercise. Each athlete is very unique, having distinct lifestyles, eating habits, training schedules, medications and supplements. All these elements need to be taken into consideration before an applicable action plan can be put together to better their health and performance. In a typical work week, Vanessa works with up to 30 different athletic clients.
When Vanessa isn’t teaching athletes how to up their game, she can be found at the gym upping her own. Her protein powder collection is impressive – it’s usually the first thing she shows off when guests come to visit. This goes without saying that her favorite room in the house is the kitchen. She has a passion for creating and preparing her very own home-grown, nutritious recipes – many of which can be found throughout her eBooks!
Vanessa’s job allows for lots of vacation days that she puts towards her infamous solo trips. Vanessa almost always travels alone as she says it helps her clear her mind and get back to her roots. Her solo trips have seen the likes of Cuba, Florida, Germany, France, Spain, and Britain. She has recently become curious to see what her own backyard has to offer, and has spent the past couple years pulling out a map of Ontario and planning a couple days away whenever she gets the chance. She hopes to retire into an RV, as she wants to see all of the United States in the form of one big road trip one day.
Through her life, Vanessa hopes to make the world a better place through her small everyday actions. She is an avid recycler – her favorite type of recycling is picking up classic rock band tees from the thrift store and sewing them down to her size. The animal lover in her puts very special care and attention to making sure all of her beauty products do not test on animals and all meat she consumes is either game or brought-up by a responsible, free-run farmer. Her side projects include volunteering for her town’s litter pick-up day and putting money aside of organizations like Kiva and Avaaz. She hopes these tiny, everyday actions are creating a positive ripple effect that reaches all ends of the earth, and will continue to for many years after her departure from the world.

Nicki Jeffery grew up on a sheep and wheat farm in central New South Wales, Australia. Since she was in primary school, Nicki knew she wanted to pursue teaching and writing as her careers. At the end of high school, she studied a Bachelor of Education (Primary) at university for four years, before teaching full time for three. A little later, in fulfilment of another childhood dream, Nicki and one of her sisters, Michelle, obtained 12 month working holiday visas to Canada. Their travels inspired this devotional.
Nicki has published magazine and newspaper articles and poems. She has posted articles on Faith Travels website. Her writing has featured in Australia’s Christian Woman magazine and the UK’s Woman Alive magazine.
