I am a retired Christian Church minister who became involved in natural healing because my health failed when I was 58 years old. A member of the church I was serving introduced me to a specific brand of pycnogenol after the doctors and their drugs completely failed. Shortly after following the church member’s suggestion I was completely healed of the many things that were plaguing me.
Producing the special brand of pycnogenol (OPC) was expensive and the company removed one of the key ingredients. It still worked, but required heavier usage of pycnogenol. A group of us started our own company because no nutritional company would sell the product due to the low profit. We developed an even better product that worked “miracles of healing” but one of the doctor members of our group betrayed us, started his own company and stole our customers claiming his product was just as good. By the time they learned different, I had to close our company as I had been supporting the company and it drove me into bankruptcy.
Due to being associated with this group of very knowledgeable people, I developed a deep knowledge concerning using natural means to produce health. I am a former English language teacher and language school owner who has written extensively my entire life. I was raised in Montana, and although the Homestead Acts came to a halt before I was born, I grew up among “ancients” who had a part in the fascinating era of the settling of the West. Occasionally I meet up with a homesteading descendant who has a story or two about growing up on the “old place.”
My first book was 53 Bears, a series of vignettes from my early childhood to my college years, two of which have been published in Montana anthologies. My novel Lila, and my short stories about woman homesteaders were inspired by the relatively unheralded experiences of strong women finding ways to become self-reliant in the American West. Many of my characters are drawn from the written histories of these women, and conversations I had grew up in a community of mostly elderly people, some who were raised on homesteads, including my parents.
My characters start off in difficulty, dissatisfaction, or in feeling unfulfilled. Circumstances compel them to leave what is familiar and move out West. At the heart of my stories are women facing new challenges, making life-changing choices, and forging relationships.
Among the heroes, I am particularly intrigued by our American mothers. Many of us are descendants of great grandmothers, grandmothers, or mothers – who were immigrants, pioneers, and homesteaders. My mother was born in the early 20th century on a homestead in the Dakotas, without electricity or running water. She lost her own mother when she was only fifteen when she became caregiver to several younger siblings.

Over my last thirty-three years of working life, I’ve been an environmental scientist, chemist, air quality modeler, consultant, and an adjunct biology and business math professor. Given my background, I’m more likely to write about Biochemical Oxygen Demand methodology or something else of interest in the field of science, but since it’s Christmas time this memory of my stint as a Mall Santa came to me.
To give you some behind-the-scenes info . . . while writing this book I have watched through my office window the monkeys feeding in the jungle trees on the high hill across from our 17th floor apartment of a building complex at the top of a another high hill at the end of a road by the ocean shore on an island called Penang, off the coast of Malaysia. Great scenery and inspiration for a Christmas story…well, maybe not really “Christmasy,” but it still works!

From early childhood on, I worked hard just to get food and water – times were extremely hard in Zhengzhou, China. When I was 5 years old, my mother had to leave my three sisters and me in order to survive. Though it seems like a terrible beginning, we all lived through it and gained great life experience. The will of providence brought me to work as a servant in the house of the great master, Sifu Qian Bo-Wan. His Kung Fu school became my home and shelter. At the age of 8, my passion for martial arts was recognized and I began learning personally from the great Bo-Wan.
I was trained in various methods: Wing Chun, Shao Lin Guan, Tai Chi Guan, Xing Xi Guam. I studied Chi Kung with my master and Buddhist monks. Just before my Sifu left this world, he told me: “Xi (his name for me), you have to go and spread this knowledge. You can do much more then I ever could, you will see.” I felt humbled and obligated to carry out his wishes.
After finishing my studies of traditional Chinese medicine with Dr. Le Cai, I moved to the Western world. I have to admit, I never understood what my Sifu meant by ‘you can do much more’. He did not say ‘better’, but more. I spent the last 30 years in teaching martial arts, Chi Kung, and related disciplines, but just recently I understood why he used the term ‘much more’.
