The urge to write first struck at age sixteen when working on a newsletter at a youth encampment in the woods of northern Maine. It may have been the wild night when lightning flashed at sunset followed by the northern lights rippling after dark. Or maybe it was the newsletter’s editor, a girl with eyes the color of the ocean. But he was inspired to write about the blurry line between reality and the fantastic.
Using two fingers and lots of white-out, he religiously typed five pages a day throughout college and well into his twenties. Then life intervened. 3. If I don’t make a conscious effort not to, I will drink nothing but tea morning, noon, and night. Hot tea, sweet tea, green tea – I love it all.
4. There doesn’t seem to be much in life that is better than coming home to a big dog who is overjoyed to see me. My other family members usually show significantly less enthusiasm about my return.
5. Singing in my bestest, loudest voice does not make my family put on their happy faces. This includes the big, loving dog referenced above.
6. Yes, I am aware that bestest is not a word.
7. Dorothy was right. There’s no place like home.
8. All of the numerous bottles in my shower must be lined up with their labels facing out. It makes me feel a little like Julia Roberts’ mean husband from the movie ‘Sleeping with the Enemy,’ but I can’t seem to control this particular quirk.
9. I love, love, love finding a great bargain.
10. Did I mention that I hate whipped cream? It makes my stomach churn to look at it, touch it, smell it, or even think about it. Great – now I’m thinking about it. Ick!

Much of my (much travelled) early childhood was spent “making up stories in my head” – these days I still do the same thing – but now I write it all down. Basically, my “career” as a writer has really just been one of letting my “imaginative eccentricities” run riot and then converting the results into children’s adventures. I was born in Zimbabwe and raised and educated in South Africa and San Francisco. I live now in England – in a very rural way – near Bristol. I work part-time as a teaching assistant in local village schools and do use my classrooms for “testing and research” when I am developing a new story. For relaxation I indulge in Pilates exercises and organic gardening. Literacy and children’s education in Africa is a pet subject of mine. I do what I can for this through the Books-For-Africa programme.

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.

After spending time in the army, Chris embarked on a career in musical theatre production and went on to co-produce touring shows in the 1980s. However, after discussions with his bank manager and the revelation that a mortgage needed to be paid monthly, it was agreed he would also seek a proper job’. Soon he found himself working in service delivery management, but all the while continued to pursue an interest in the stage, script writing and organising shows. With his children starting to leave the nest, he decided the time was right to return to his creative roots and began writing full-time, developing the characters for an entangled mystery series based on the registers of a police court missionary. Originally intended for screen production, he wrote several scripts and began pitching the idea to television production companies. After very positive feedback from the BBC, he was also persuaded in 2012 to write the storylines as distinct novels. Then, in 2013, Schnauzer Publications released FATE the first of the ‘Entanglement of’ mystery stories. Throughout 2014, Chris was busy writing the second book REVENGE, and in Spring 2016 the third book DECEIT is planned for publication.
Other projects he is currently working on include a short radio play, THE ROAD, as well as further development of a TV series adapting the Jacques Futrelle mystery books. In addition, after many evenings spent discussing the concept of a sitcom with his good friend over a bottle or two of Pineau des Charentes, finally, the time is right to start capturing these ideas into scripts.
Away from writing, Chris has always loved to sketch and, over the years, has produced numerous limited editions of his work. With more time now available, he hopes to once more pick up his pastels.
