About When Raven Cries:
Tlingit Stories are rarely without a moral or straightforward point. This is true in this book, and although it may seem outside the boundaries of defined fascinating fiction, this story is true to the makeup of Tlingit oratory. Here in Kadashan’s writing, there is a history, a reality of experience and discovery that is typical in Tlingit story telling. It might be best to refer to such story development as “bicultural fiction.” Kadashan subtly contributes to his awareness by writing a story based on true situations of his community’s history, setting it around a potlatch, and by creating characters who are experiencing loss and grief, and who are looking for methods to address their pain. The potlatch—in this case the memorial potlatch—brings to his words addressing grief. Grief is commonly addressed through story, through potlatch, through song and speech is one of the most powerful ways of addressing grief. All of these elements are woven into the social structure of Tlingit life and one usually does exist without the other. The importance of oratory and story is explicit throughout Kadashan’s novel. Raven is a part of Tlingit existence, and certainly of many of our traditional stories, where he either stirs up mischief, or he provides guidance. It stands to reason that Raven should show up in new stories too, and this is one way of continuing the tradition of story for the Tlingit and by the Tlingit. Raven is not worshiped as a deity but is recognized as he who delivers the “goods”, brings the message, or spurs awareness. Tlingit writers and all readers should be encouraged by Kadashan’s story, and celebrate the awareness that this particular raven brings in his words.

Kadashan was born in Sitka, Alaska. His grandmother named him after her father, John Kadashan. The elder Kadashan was known by historians as Chief Kadashan, however in his later years he was regarded as a “peace-maker.” When he was only six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. His mother decided to move back to her hometown of Yakutat, where she married his step-father. After his elementary school years in Yakutat he went “outside” to Holland High School in Holland Michigan and later to Mount Edgecombe Boarding School near Sitka in Alaska. Kadashan did not start looking into writing before attending a creative writing class at Sheldon Jackson College. And even then, it wasn’t until during his time at Brigham Young that he learned the real discipline of writing. In 1992 he self-published a collection of short stories. For six years he worked as a columnist for the Juneau Empire and a statewide Native newspaper, the Tundra Times.
He learned a lot about tribal issues when he worked as the Tribal President of the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe. He drew from his experiences to write about politics for the Empire.
Kadashan is a contemporary author who draws his inspiration from the oral traditions of his Tlingit people. Of course, because of his Tlingit heritage, he is strongly influenced by traditional oral narratives, which stem from his education at Sheldon Jackson College and Brigham Young University; his work also reflects influences from Western Culture. Kadashan should not be regarded as an author torn between two poles, but rather as a mediator and like his great grandfather, Kadashan is, through his writings, a “peace maker”.

Ancianidad, tercera edad, cuarta edad, “persona mayor”, abuelo, viejo, la decadencia que se produce en el ser humano es lo que habitualmente se llamaba ser viejo o más amablemente ser anciano antes y que ahora ha tomado una gran variedad de denominaciones. En todo caso de lo que hablamos es de cómo, a partir de los 25 años, de manera más o menos insensible, el ser humano va perdiendo potencialidades, hasta llegar al punto en que se lo considera un viejo.
Este concepto ha cambiado mucho en las últimas décadas. Hace apenas cincuenta años una persona se jubilaba poco después y se moría no mucho más allá de los sesenta. No hablemos ya de lo que ocurría en el S. XIX o en siglos anteriores donde el promedio de vida era de 30 o 40 años. Estamos hablando de tiempos en que vivir sesenta años era previsible y que pasar los setenta era un hecho excepcional, o sea el S. XX. Todo esto ha cambiado y al modificarse, ha producido una cantidad de efectos que son cada vez más importantes, desde muchos puntos de vista y en muchos campos. Sin embargo según CIA.2008, zonas como la del Congo tienen un promedio de vida inferior a los 40 años, África central alrededor de los 50 años de vida promedio, India 67, Brasil 70 y así sucesivamente, es decir que lo que diga respecto de las edades de envejecimiento es diferente aun hoy día dependiendo cual sea el país en que vive la persona.
Hay personas que después de la edad en que se lo carátula como anciano en esa sociedad, actúan de una manera en que parecieran tener menos años, sea por carácter o porque se estimulan de tal manera al punto que llega a enfermarlos o a morir de un infarto antes de lo previsto. Es una descripción de lo que suele pasar a una edad que ahora es posterior a esa ancianidad de quienes tenían cincuenta años no hace mucho tiempo atrás, ancianidad que se ha ido corriendo y que en definitiva podría definirse con esa palabra inglesa tan descriptiva que es “aging”, o sea haciendo años. Hacer años, o pasarlos, es algo que ocurre desde que nacemos, pero que se hace más notorio y más consciente cuando se van acumulando décadas.
La ancianidad es un proceso personal y no se pueden dar reglas generales. Todo lo que digo está lleno de excepciones, porque cada persona es diferente y cada uno hace el proceso de su vida de una forma distinta. Hay quienes creen que el otro envejece antes que uno pero también hay quienes ven a sus coetáneos como más activos que ellos
mismos; los hay quienes creen que no envejecen, mientras que los hipocondríacos y depresivos sienten la vejez antes que nadie, aunque en realidad cada uno de ellos envejece a partir de cualquier edad y a su propio ritmo.

My whole life has evolved around writing. I started writing stories when I was about seven years old. Then, of course, the stories I wrote were horrible: bland, uninteresting, and twist-less. When I was about ten years old, I dabbled into writing comics. Then, I would take my favorite cartoon characters, and I would draw stories around them. I would make these characters do and say whatever I wanted them to do and say. I enjoyed it! After filling my notebooks with these drawings, I would curl up on my bed in the night and read them to myself. It never failed to bring me joy.
When I hit twelve, I stopped writing comics and I started reading novels. While my mates still flipped through picture books and comics, I took an interest in thick-sized, picture-less “story books” that opened me up to a whole new world of possibilities and adventures. Then I would often finish a full-length fantasy novel in less than a week. It was about this time that I really started to write stories. I started with writing short stories in the universe of my most enjoyed series. Then as I developed as a writer, reading other writers’ works, I began to write stories in universes I created.
Now, I’m an avid reader and author of contemporary/epic fantasy. For me, writing is much more than a hobby. It’s a passion. I love writing, and I love readers!

She took an unplanned hiatus from writing when she went to Vanderbilt Law School and all of her brain power got consumed by cases, statutes, exams, and partying like only grad students in Nashville can. Q – So, what makes the Reverend Annabelle Dixon series special?
A – Annabelle. When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create a series that featured a heart-warming, smart, sometimes ditzy, ultimately good protagonist that we all undisputedly adore. I love mysteries so there was no question this character was going to be involved in solving them and I set it in the Cornish countryside, right at the end of England, where I have fond memories of vacations as a child.
But it is Annabelle – her humanity, her empathy, her big heart – who makes the series so special. With her sometimes partner, sometimes antagonist, Inspector Mike Nicholls, they create fun and drama as the small town mysteries unfold with humor and intrigue.
If you enjoy the TV series, The Vicar of Dibley, Miranda, or Midsomer Murders, I think you will enjoy the Reverend Annabelle cozy mysteries series.
Q – In what order should I read the books?
A – The Reverend Annabelle Dixon cozy mysteries can be read, and enjoyed, in any order. The prequel, Death at the Café is set in London and takes place a few years before the rest in the series. All the books are complete mysteries.

Annabelle is a fun, uncomplicated character who is soulful, devout, smart and funny with a penchant for cake. Both Jamie and I are English and we feature many English countryside rituals, institutions and customs in these stories.
Ultimately, readers who enjoy gentle pacing with a plot that twists and turns, features much fun, drama, quintessential Britishness, and, of course, small town murder all the way to the end, will get a kick out of this series.
