About The Ghost of Democracy:
The White House is haunted.
11:31 PM on January 20, 2033, after a long inauguration day, newly-elected President Joshua Land enters the Oval Office and sits down at the Resolute Desk to read the letter from the outgoing president, Daniel Manning. In that letter, President Manning says that for everyone who pursues the presidency, the White House is their white whale, their Moby Dick. And, as Moby Dick haunted Captain Ahab, so also the White House haunts each president.
At first, Joshua thinks the letter is a joke, some kind of hazing ritual the previous president plays on the new president. But, as eerie occurrences begin happening throughout the White House, President Land begins to wonder if maybe Daniel’s letter was a genuine warning.
Eventually, President Land discovers that the White House is in fact haunted. Joshua’s agenda is “less government at home, and more Democracy abroad”. But, the ghosts think Democracy has run its course and needs to be eliminated because it can no longer effectively fix the world’s problems. The ghosts explain that they have been haunting the White House since Teddy Roosevelt’s administration. Ever since, they have helped each president gradually prepare the country and the world for the transition away from Democracy to a better form of government. The ghosts’ think the world is now ready for that better form of government.
Joshua is told that if he does not comply, the haunting will intensify.
Finding himself at a crossroads, an intersection where chance and destiny meet, President Land must decide whether to ignore the ghosts’ demands and continue on his current course, or fulfill what the White House says is the presidency’s destiny. With a life that has been filled with pain, will Joshua be able to manage the demons from his past as he faces the ghosts of his presidency?

A. I saw a documentary about grown men who dressed up as dolls. They ventured out in public, running their errands, basking in the attention given to them. The dolls thought they were beautiful. The perception by the bystanders was the opposite. The dichotomy was amazing to see. I thought, “How disturbing!”
Q. Explain to readers what the most difficult part of writing this book was.
A. The documentary forced me to think, “Why?” Why would a man do this? Something triggered this. Maybe something traumatic happened. Like a spouse dying. I love my wife dearly and would probably act out in unnatural ways if she died. Creating this story was the hardest thing I had to do. Imagining…
Q. Why are you drawn to this genre?
A. I love stories where the protagonist experiences something tragic. When the main character feels, or lives, something that is dark and disturbing, the reader knows, from seeing the character living out on the page, that he has survived another day. This gives the reader hope that he will be fine.
Q. What other types of stories do you enjoy?
A. I enjoy everything from psychological horror, fast-paced thrillers, dark suspense, stories with lots of action, transgressive fiction, and unexpected plot twists.

He stopped in mid-sentence on his phone call and stared at me, with this intense look on his face. Uh-oh. Was something wrong? Did I have a poppy seed stuck in my teeth? Becca would have told me. Or not. My mouth. It hung open like a car door. I closed it and made my lips smile.
Calm down. This is a nice guy who likes to work with me.
“I’ll call you back.” Nathan put his cell phone on the desk.
“Hello Nathan. It’s good to meet you in person. I’m Amber.” I moved towards him, smacked my hip into the corner of the desk, and bit back a curse as pain shot through my leg. Do not drop the F bomb. Smile still in place, I stuck out my hand, praying it wasn’t damp.
He kept staring for another second, then kind of shook his head and smiled back. “So nice to meet you too, Amber. I’ve enjoyed working with you long distance.” He took my trembling little paw and shook it.
Wow. What the heck was that tingle running up my arm? His grip was firm, but not like he was crushing me. By the way his eyes widened, he felt something too. Maybe I’d picked up static electricity walking across the room. Not real likely, on tile floor, but I couldn’t think of any other reason for this surge of energy. We stood there for an awkward moment while he studied me, then he dropped my hand.
I wanted to glance down to see if there were scorch marks, but I grabbed it with my other hand and clasped them both in front of me. Before they did something silly, like reach up and stroke the slight shadow of a beard on his face.
“Sit down, please.”
My legs shook as I took a seat in the chair across from the desk. What was I, a love-struck teenager meeting a rock star? Jeez, this was Nathan, the guy who laughed at my corny jokes and liked the pictures of my cat I emailed him. Why did a wave of heat flood my body, particularly in my girl parts?
Because he was hotter than hell in person that’s why. I didn’t get that energy, that piercing awareness, when I talked to him on the phone. And I sure never smelled him. Kind of woodsy, with a bit of musk layered in. A hint of spice too; bay leaves, or cardamom. From his slightly messed up hair to his shiny Italian loafers, the guy radiated sex appeal. And those laser-beam eyes.
No. I gave myself a mental bonk on the head. I had zero interest in his hotness. I had no time to think about men, with my jobs and my family situation. And anyway, gorgeous billionaires like him didn’t look twice at plus-size girls like me.
“So Amber, tell me why you’d be a good candidate for this position.”

We were all going to die.
My great escape into the wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to vanquish Heartbreak from my life was going to end in my early demise. And here I thought it was my broken heart that was killing me.
We’d been driving for over seven hours. The last town snuck past us an hour ago when we’d turned off the paved road. Pavement became gravel, then dirt, then two-tracks. The wooden hand-painted signs with arrows and mileage that marked our way made it feel like we were driving through another world. Like the kids through the wardrobe in the Narnia books. Okay, that part sounded kind of nice, actually.
Dirk would hate it here. No tennis courts in the forest. No skim lattes with soy milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon. And he certainly wouldn’t drive his BMW down a two-track through the woods with the top down.
I sighed. This was harder than I thought it’d be, getting Dirk out of my head. If I could exorcise him from my head, I’m sure my heart would heal faster. I was so tired of crying, of whining, of wishing life was different. All I wanted was to settle down with a husband and a house and a dog and 2.4 kids. I knew exactly how I wanted to decorate our home. I’d planned the kinds of parties we would have. We’d be part of the Neighborhood Watch team, and we’d plan block parties for 4th of July. We were going to have the perfect life together.
Then it all ended. Abruptly. Without warning. And I thought I was going to die. But that was four months ago. I had to find a way to get my life back again. Hence the trip into the wilderness.
Then I remembered we were all going to die. Who knew there was this much wilderness out there?
“How much gas do we have?” I called from the back of the fifteen-passenger van. I could just see the obituary.
Ten city girls who should have known better died last week when they drove a van through the wilderness without gassing up in the last town.

About The First Bridge 1955-1995: The Testimonies of Jewish Ethiopian Students from Kfar Batya:
In the years 1955-1956, 27 youths were brought to Israel from the Jewish-
Ethiopian community (then called Falasha). They were sent to the Kfar
Batya religious youth village for their education.
The first group completed its education after three years and returned to
Ethiopia in order to educate and train the youth of the community and
work on its behalf. The second group spent eight years in Kfar Batya and
other institutions, returning to Ethiopia for the same purpose.
Most of the young people tell difficult personal stories, as they were
troubled by feelings of detachment, abandonment and rejection—paying
a high personal price for the purpose to which they had dedicated their
young lives. As Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, Israel’s second president, put it, they were
“the first bridge” between Israel and the Jewish community of Ethiopia.
Their pioneering activity on behalf of their people ultimately led to
Operation Moses, Operation Solomon and various other operations
which must remain covert. Today, most of the young people from these
two groups reside in Israel, and the story of their adventures and personal
sacrifices is told here for the first time.
The Yad Tabenkin Institute for the Study of Zionism in Eastern Lands,
in interviewing and documenting their stories, aims to expose the
broader public to the activities of these young people, to inspire a new
generation of the Ethiopian community in Israel with esprit de corps and

We know how these two men are such big rivals when it comes to the digital world. However, it is also such a wonder to realize that these two well-known rivals have several traits, approaches, and beliefs in common as well.
To compare Gates against Jobs is much like deciding whether to buy a Mac or a Windows PC. Both these men’s passion, style, and attitude can be seen on their company’s products. The devices that we are using now, in a way, represents what and how these men are without us noticing it.
It is that rich legacy that Jobs left us and the legacy that Gates is still trying to enrich further that compels me to make this comparison.
