Throughout his childhood, he found himself curiously attracted to books. This strange hobby did not take anything away from the computer gaming and occasional sports, but the books stayed and the wonderful stories that could be found in his father’s vast library would inspire him throughout his life to appreciate the power of story telling. As time moved on, he graduated from the university with a degree of Master of Political Science, dreamed of a career in diplomacy and ended up making computer games in Nokia N-Gage. T. Jackson King (Tom) is a professional archaeologist and journalist. He writes hard science fiction, anthropological SciFi, dark fantasy/horror and contemporary fantasy/magic realism–but that didn’t happen until he was 38.
Before then, college years spent in Paris and in Tokyo led Tom into antiwar activism, hanging out with some Japanese hippies and learning how often governments lie to their citizens. The latter lesson led him and a college buddy to publish the Shinjuku Sutra English language underground tabloid in Japan in 1967. That was followed by helping shut down the University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus in 1968 and a bus trip to Washington D.C. for the Second March on Washington where thousands demanded an end to the Vietnam War.
Temporary sanity returned when Tom worked in a radiocarbon lab at UC Riverside and earned an MA degree in Archaeology from UCLA. His interests in ancient history, ancient cultures and journalism got him several government agency jobs that paid the bills, led him to roam the raw landscape of the Western United States, and helped him and his wife Leslee raise three kids.
A funny thing happened on the way to normality. By the time he was 38 and doing federal arky work in Colorado, Tom’s first novel STAR TRADERS was a stage play in his head that wouldn’t go away. So he wrote it down. It got rejected. His next novel was published as RETREAD SHOP (Warner Books, 1988). It was off to the writing races and Tom’s many voyages of imaginative discovery have led to 20 published novels, a book of poetry, and a conviction that when Humans reach the stars, we will find them crowded with space-going Aliens. We will be the New Kids On The Block! This theme appears in much of Tom’s short fiction and novel writing.
Tom lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA and hangs with a group of smart and tolerant Westerners. Divorce has taught him to smile a lot and to work at being a Nice Guy. Still, he is pretty weird. Has been since fourth grade when he began reading SciFi. Since then, he and Authority have rarely been in agreement.

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.

I originally studied Architecture, and was fortunate to complete my Degree and Post Grad Diploma at Canterbury College of Art – one of the last remaining Art Colleges which still possessed a faculty of Architecture. I was also lucky enough to spend my early years growing up in the then formative city of Dubai, surrounded by Islamic culture and art. As a young child I became very interested in the geometric Islamic patterns that occur in all of the vernacular architecture, art, jewelry and carpets of the region. Back then, I came across the graphical arts entity called ‘Altair Designs’ who were releasing a series of books, which were in effect the forerunners of today’s adult colouring books. These books were packed with detailed geometric designs inspired by generations of Islamic culture, and were a graphical reminder that this area of the world, in particular Mesopotamia (Iraq and Iran) are really the birthplace of modern day design, mathematics, and intelligent artistic expression. So I owe a big debt of thanks to the people of the Middle East, whose generosity and cultural expression left an indelible mark on my young western mind!
