Tyler R. Tichelaar, Ph.D., has been in love with the Arthurian legend since he first read The Boy’s King Arthur by Sidney Lanier with N.C. Wyeth’s illustrations, and he credits Marion Zimmer Bradley’s The Mists of Avalon with making him realize the potential for writing new versions of the legend.
Although Tyler considers himself a novelist first and a scholar second, he wrote his Master’s Thesis on the Arthurian legend as a way to accomplish the research necessary for the Arthurian novel he was simultaneously writing. A chapter of his Master’s Thesis was published as “Creating King Arthur’s Children: A Trend in Modern Fiction” in the Spring 1999 issue of Arthuriana.
Although his doctoral studies at Western Michigan University led him to focusing on British Gothic nineteenth century novels, and his love for his hometown of Marquette, Michigan resulted in his publishing a series of historical fiction and non-fiction books set in Upper Michigan including the popular The Marquette Trilogy and My Marquette, his love for the Arthurian legend has never died, and after many years his vision for a series of Arthurian novels is now coming to fruition.
In January 2011, an expanded and revised version of his initial M.A. Thesis was published by Modern History Press as King Arthur’s Children: A Study in Fiction and Tradition.
In 2014, Tyler began publishing The Children of Arthur series, beginning with Arthur’s Legacy. The series will trace King Arthur’s descendants throughout history with stunning results. A new novel in this five book series is planned to be released annually through 2018.
When Tyler is not busy writing his novels, or editing books for other authors (he is the owner of Superior Book Productions), he can often be seen driving around Marquette singing out loud to his favorite musical, Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot, which he listens to almost daily.
As for whether or not Tyler is a descendant of King Arthur, he notes that the debate over Arthur’s historicity will probably never be resolved, but Tyler can trace his own ancestry back to the Plantagenet dynasty of England as well as several Welsh and Scottish families that claim descent from King Arthur, lineages Tyler discusses in detail in in his book King Arthur’s Children. Here are my thought processes and life experiences that’ve gone into the eBook “Loose Threads.”
# I drove a taxi in Vancouver, BC for 27 years. I worked the night shift, which starts in midafternoon and ends in the wee hours of the morning.
# Daytime customers worry about getting to work on time, making appointments, meeting schedules and so on. Their concerns are upfront and objective—in other words, going from point A to point B. Nighttime customers go out with friends, have a few laughs and forget about anything serious. Their mindsets are recreational and subjective.
# Over the years I’ve seen and heard the best and worst of human nature. Just part of the job.
# Folks change when the sun goes down. After a few drinks the masks come off. Minds take flight. The shyness vanishes. The whole world becomes high adventure or rosy romance until nonsense conquers all. On the way home, groggy customers will swear they’ve had a wonderful weekend, even when they can’t recall the details. Some will blurt out secrets they’d never tell their sweethearts, friends or family members. Others become confused or even belligerent.
# It’s fortunate I was never seriously injured from disgruntled customers or errant vehicles, considering the number of times my cab was totaled by drunk or berserk drivers.
# Cabdrivers wear many hats: transporter, advisor, jump starter, problem solver, bouncer, bulk hauler, fee collector… all the while fronting the friendly ear of a bartender.
# I learned one hard and fast rule. Most hookers are honest to a fault. They don’t always tell the whole truth, but they don’t push you off a cliff. They can’t afford to lie because they operate in that stratum of society which is best left “under the rug.” Hookers don’t have standardized price tags or government seals of approval to fall back on; they have only themselves to trade.
# Vancouver wasn’t the city of my childhood, so when I began in the cab business, I didn’t know half of the shortcuts or restricted approaches to common destinations. For example, hotels are often located beside major byways with traffic dividers. Unless you arrive from the right direction, you won’t have access to the hotel.
# It was the ladies of the night who taught me the shortcuts and whether to drop off at the front door or the back door. They had ulterior motives, of course, since the shortcuts saved them money on the meter. Yet I got valuable info that made me a better cabdriver, which over time paid dividends.
# One night I drove across Vancouver’s busiest bridge. I was ten-car lengths behind the car ahead whose brake lights flashed, the passenger door opened and out tumbled a body. The driver slowed but never stopped. After two somersaults , the body stood up and waved frantically. I pulled to stop and learned she was a lady of night who had a bad date and no money. She asked me to take her to an apartment where she promised I’d get paid. When we arrived at the place, it turned out her boyfriend was out, but she managed to convince the apartment manager to fork out for the cab fare.
# This illustrates my point that hookers don’t lie. Here was a young woman who’d gone through a traumatic ordeal, who felt afraid of being injured by a bad date, enough to jump out of a moving car. Some folks would’ve given her free cab ride, and I didn’t expect to get paid. Yet her word was her bond, and she made good on it. Over 27 years, I’ve gotten stiffed by con artists, young punks, lawyers, registered nurses, financial tycoons and even a standing judge. I’ve had to fend off a couple of attempted robberies. But I’ve never gotten the run-around from hookers. If they can’t pay the fare they’ll tell you upfront.
# A serial killer stalked Vancouver during the last decades of the 20th-century. He owned a pig farm east of the city. He murdered more than fifty young women, many of whom were runaways from dysfunctional families; many were zonked on drugs of one sort or another. They may’ve taken a few wrong turns, but they were human beings, just trying to survive. The pig farmer found a novel way to dispose of his victims. He’d grind them up with his fodder and feed the mix to his pigs. It made DNA retrieval difficult if not impossible, so the world may never know how many young women he murdered.
# In a small way, I wanted to pay homage to the young women who service the sex trade, and especially to the victims of the pig farmer. The main character of “Loose Threads” is Nyssa Persson who spent three years under the thumb of a Tokyo pimp. Nyssa has a feisty nature which is composite of several women I’ve known, including my late wife.
# The narrative isn’t about the sex trade; it’s about adjusting to life after rescue where Nyssa is freed from the masquerades of the sex trade. She faces the same dilemmas that brave soldiers face as they return from the battlefields of Afghanistan. It’s not easy to shift from the insanity of war to the petty quietude of normal society. Adrenalin-charged flashbacks of lethal dangers don’t vanish overnight. Nor is it easy to switch from a serflike regimen to an informal society offering untold freedoms.
# Nyssa learns it’s possible to thrive a society without adverts, without income inequity, without politicians, without bureaucratic snarls of rules and regulations. However, she also learns that utopia comes with a price.

Writing fiction has been of interest to me for as long as I can remember. One of my favourite things in school was when the teacher gave us free rein to write a fiction story of our choice, I actually found one of these that I’d received an A* for in my old student record of achievement file. It was strange reading it back, ten pages of A4 painfully scripted by hand in fountain pen. I am only thirty four years of age and ball point had obviously been invented, so god knows why I slogged it out in fountain pen, but I did. After school my writing literally stopped, I got caught up with other things that people in their late teens enjoy, mainly partying and getting drunk if I remember correctly, and working to pay for the aforementioned activities. Even in the sixteen years’ gap between that last hand scribed story I found and the publishing of Watchers, I tried many times to start a book. Sadly any project I tried never got past the first three chapters. I even started writing Watchers in 2004, shortly after meeting my long term partner and now fiancée, Laura. The start was a little different but the character names and general plot were the same, and that’s how it began. Although at that point I did not get past chapter two. Whilst I’d often think up cool or quirky ideas for stories I’d never get round to writing, Watchers would not go away. For near on ten years it remained where I thought it always would, in my head. Then as the indie book began to take hold I saw my chance to get this story out there, now all I had to do was actually write the thing. I penned the first two chapters and let a friend read them, asking for an honest review, when she literally demanded I carry on writing it so she could see the story unfold I knew it was now or never, and after nearly a year’s research and writing I finally finished the book, even leaving it open enough for a follow up novel if the story obtained some good reviews, which it did. So, being a glutton for punishment and still not quite able to believe that I’d written a novel length story, I started book two. My plans were to have it written and published by now, but we had a pretty shitty 2013 with a number of close family deaths, this saw the writing of book two well and truly put on hold. Thankfully, we did have one ray of light in that dark year: my son Finley was born in January. Whilst being great fun and now a year old, he certainly does not give me much time to put finger to keyboard. SB

Q – So, what makes the Remembering Raven series special?
A – It’s a mixture of things, actually. When I started writing these books, I wanted to create a series of books that I would love to read. I love paranormal romances and vampire love stories, but I also love books with some action and a strong female character. I tried to roll of these interests into one series.
The Remembering Raven books are a mix of romance, sex, longing, occult, and mystery. I also tried to create some really memorable supporting characters too, that I hope readers will enjoy.

A – If you want to read the series in order, I’d suggest the following sequence:
– Cheyenne (Book 1)
– Always Mine (Prequel – although this can be read at anytime)

Once, there was a poor woodcutter and his wife;

“Do you get the impression that we’re the last girls in town to get married and have babies?” Shell bit into her gooey grilled cheese, and wiped the edges of her mouth.
“Nah, Shell. We’re not the last, we’re just the smart ones. The way I see it, there is no need to rush off into marriage and babies. That just ends badly, and you know it. Besides, we’re not the only ones who aren’t married yet. You’ll never guess who I ran into today, and he didn’t have a ring on his finger.”
Shell sat up, and leaned in closer. Gossip was her favorite food, and gossip about her old school friends was her favorite flavor. “Who on earth did you run into today?”
“Well, actually, his dog ran into me. Do you remember Tucker Gaston? He was the nicest one of the Gaston twins?” Carly didn’t want to remind Shell that she’d gone out with his brother, but she didn’t have to.
“Eww, yeah. His brother was Larry Gaston, that pig. You went out with him once, didn’t you?” Shell crinkled her nose up like she had just gotten a whiff of something rotten.
“One time was more than enough for me. He was so sexist and full of himself, I think he’d probably been better off just dating himself.” Carly took a sip of her coffee and remembered her one and only date with Larry Gaston. It had been a trip to the movies, where they sat through some macho action movie for two hours, then he’d tried to make out with her in his car before dropping her back off at home.
To be fair, they had both still been in high school at the time, but Carly’s “bad choice of boyfriend” alarm had been going off like crazy after that first date, and she sort of felt that she’d dodged a bullet.
“I wonder what lucky gal wound up with Larry for a husband, if he’s even settled down.” Shell threw her empty Styrofoam container in the trash as the bell over the door began to jingle.
The blonde that walked in the door seemed like a stranger to Carly and Shell at first. Her bleached hair was teased and sprayed into place using what looked like more hairspray than Carly had ever used in her life. The hairstyle wasn’t the only thing that was big about the woman. Her choice of clothing was loud, to say the least, and her makeup was something straight from the eighties.
Yoga pants clung tightly to a generously sized derriere, which Carly couldn’t help but notice when the lady turned to unhook the handle of her purse from the door handle. She was wearing an oversized, low cut sweatshirt that had its sleeves cut off, and a pair of neon yellow bra straps could be seen hugging her curvy shoulders.
Hot pink lipstick, loads of eyeliner, and the brightest blue eyeshadow known to man created an effect that was slightly retro, and completely unnatural. This lady does not read Vogue, thought Carly, but she smiled politely. Big hair smiled back, but it didn’t look genuine.
“Well, ladies, it is getting hot out there!” Big hair sashayed into the room like a big neon sign, practically blinking in her brightness. “But it’s so cool in here, I might just have to stay for a while!” She stepped right up to the counter and plonked her purse down firmly. Looking back and forth from Shell to Carly, she laughed suddenly.
“Well, shoot! Y’all don’t remember me, do you? It’s Mona, from high school.” Carly looked at Mona, then at Shell, who seemed to be straining to put the brightly colored face and name together.
Then it clicked. “Mona Durham?” Carly remembered only one Mona ever in her lifetime, and it was not the same person she saw standing in front of her. Mona Durham had been a skinny, quiet kid who followed her and Shell around the playground in elementary school, and who had been too shy to ask anybody to prom. This could not be the same person.
