I was born in South Carolina but moved to New York when I was three years old. I went to Professional Children’s School in NYC where I was exposed to the arts. Although I loved writing from the time that I was eight years old, the passion was fueled after I got into high school and college where I majored in it.
Once I was old enough to hold a pencil correctly, I began writing stories about getting the baby sister that I so badly yearned for. I’d write every night before bed until one day my mom told my older brother and me that she was going to have a baby. We were both beyond ecstatic, although my brother cried when we learned that the baby was a girl. I screamed for joy because I finally had my sister.
Then about a year later, my mom gave us a little brother. Four years after that, we got another baby sister and two years later, another sister. Moral of the story: Be careful what you write for.
The idea for Lucy Green Eyes came into thought in 1997. My mother would always talk about what her life was like as a young girl having to run from her strict grandmother’s switches, and dodging dirty old men in the cotton field, outrunning trucks that’d be in hot pursuit and finding ways to become invisible to her molester. I had listened to my mother’s tales all my life and wanted to share them. She was an escapee from a Polish shtetl wiped out by the Nazis, a high-school political activist in Lithuania, a university student in France who lost her first love tragically, a partisan for Arab-Jewish co-existence in Palestine who was caught in the first intifada in 1936, and a penniless arrival to America in 1937.

Inside the stone building, a British officer examined passenger’s travel documents. When Felice’s turn came, the crisply uniformed colonel looked at her bare shoulders and her short beige and cream linen dress. A marriage certificate issued the day before by a rabbi in Beirut said they were husband and wife. The man looked malnourished. He had a red beard and long ear-locks, and large spectacles covered his face. His black suit was all dusty, and his head was covered with a large Hassidic black fedora. The couple did not speak to each other. The colonel was under orders to do his part at the border to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into Palestine. He asked Felice first in English, which she didn’t know, then in French, “Are the two of you married?”
“Yes, of course,” she answered him.
“What language do you have in common?” he continued, probing the ruse.
But Felice and her newly certificated husband had no language in common. He spoke Arabic and Hebrew, and she Polish, French, German, Yiddish, and some Russian. “The Language of love,” she said in perfect melodious French, not missing a beat, flirting with the colonel.

In the early 1990’s one of my entrepreneurial ventures had me working the streets of Budapest as an ‘international trade consultant.’ Hungary’s newly formed democracy was in its infancy, and the country was transitioning from a state to market economy. I met lots of entertaining and sometimes crazy characters in both the business and political arenas during my three year stint there. The Budapest night life could get quite crazy at times, if your ‘meetings’ and social engagements led you to certain places. It was always interesting and fun to be ‘playing games with the faces’, as Simon and Garfunkle would put it.
My Hungarian colleagues would sometimes identify a group or person living it up big time in a crowded room, saying things like ‘I heard he is a lieutenant with the Mob’ or ‘she is one of the Organization’s women’ or even ‘be careful if you do business with that guy.’ It was evident, even from a distance, that the Russian Mob had a big influence in the changes that were going on in the country at that time. It was these real life experiences that inspired me to write my debut fictional novel.

In the traditional Hawaiian culture words or sounds have manna. Scholars suggest that the word manna comes from the Egyptian term mennu, meaning “food.” In Christian context manna refers to spiritual nourishment.
When I lived on the island of Maui I was fortunate to be one of the few haole (pronounced how-lee and literally means “without breath”) accepted to study the ancient art of hula with Hokulani Padilla, an esteemed kuma hula (hula master), and a wise woman well versed in Hawaiian culture and lore. The word haole means foreigner, or someone who is not native to Hawaii, especially a white person.
Many wondrous spiritual events happened when I lived on the mother land of Maui. I was fortunate to directly experience some of the richness of the Hawaiian culture first hand, including an encounter with the Goddess Pelé on the morning of my 29th birthday in Haleakalā crater. Pelé, the fire goddess, is the goddess of volcanoes and creator of the Hawaiian Islands.
When I told Hokulani about my vision and experience in Haleakalā crater she told me who I had met and what the event signified. Within a few months time I was pregnant with my son, Ezra.
As I feel I’ve received initiation into the deeper spiritual meaning represented by the two words aloha and mahalo I’d like to offer you a glimpse into their deeper meaning. I hope what I share resonates with you and you will feel inspired to use these two words in your daily life.
Also, for the first time I open up and share a little known story that I’ve never shared publicly about the circumstances surrounding the birth of my son Ezra and how the goddess Pelé figures prominently in the story.
