I walked into final year of university holding a border-line third class in Bsc Economics, this meant I required a first class in final year to graduate with a Upper Second-Class Honours(2.1).
I was absolutely devastated, confused and afraid because i knew my university degree was crucial for getting better job and career prospects. I feared that i’d be a disappointment to my parents, especially after all the sacrifices and finances they had poured into my education all my life.
So I sought tutors, lecturers and friends for advice and support towards my dream but nobody believed it would be possible.
I made a decision to stop making excuses and pursue my academic dreams.
Throughout my long, tedious and memorable final year of University, I discovered and applied different effective strategies and steps that helped me to improve my marks significantly. I will share these with you in the book.
Long story short, I woke up on results day logged on my student portal and saw that I had achieved first class marks and my dream university degree.
Following my graduation, I have been able to work with other university students and share these steps and strategies with them. Several of these students have successfully applied just a handful of these steps to achieve their academic dreams, imagine the possibilities if you apply them all!
I decided to put together everything I have learned from my personal experiences and my interactions with other university students into this book. Montgomery is a pen name, based on the author’s more famous second cousin, who wrote “Anne of the Green Gables.” D.H. has a background in math and science and was previously a professor in an engineering school. I wrote “Loose Threads: Cool Assassins 1” in 3rd-person. I made every effort to stay in the background and let my fictional characters command the podium, so to speak.
# It has occurred to me that some readers may like to know more about the author, to learn the thought processes and life experiences that went into making this work of fiction. So here goes…
# I drove a taxi at night in Vancouver, Canada for 27 years. I’d start at 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. and drive till nearly dawn. Daytime customers tended to worry about making appointments, meeting schedules, completing jobs on time, etc. Their concerns were upfront and objective. Nighttime customers would meet with friends, have a few laughs and forget about anything serious. Their concerns were recreational and subjective. Some customers would tell me how much fun they had over the weekend, even though they couldn’t remember half of what they did.
# Over the years I saw and heard the best and worst of human nature. It was part of the job. It’s fortunate I was never seriously injured, considering the number of times my cab was totaled by drunk or berserk drivers.
# People change when the sun goes down. After a few drinks the masks come off and they’re ready for adventure and romance, or making fools of themselves. In the wee hours folks will blurt out secrets they’d never say to their boss, their friends or even their life partners. Cabdrivers wear many hats: transporter, advisor, jump starter, problem solver, bouncer, makeshift hauler, fee collector… all the while maintaining the friendly ear of a bartender.
# The one maxim I learned over the years was that ladies of the night (hookers) never lie. They may not always tell the whole truth, but they don’t tell outright lies. They can’t afford to lie because they operate in that stratum of society which is best left “under the rug.” Hookers don’t have authorized price tags or government standards to fall back on; they have only themselves to trade.
# Vancouver wasn’t the city of my childhood, so when I began in the cab business, I didn’t know half of the route shortcuts or common locations. It was the ladies of the night who taught me the shortcuts and whether to drop off at the front door or the back door. They had ulterior motives, of course, since the shortcuts saved them money on the meter. Still, I got valuable info that made me a better cabdriver, which over time paid me dividends.
# One night I drove across Vancouver’s busiest bridge. I was ten-car lengths behind the car ahead whose brake lights flash and the passenger door opened and out tumbled a body. The driver slowed but never stopped. After two somersaults , the body stood up and waved frantically. She was a lady of night who had a bad date and no money. She asked me to take her somewhere, and she promised I’d get paid. When we arrived at the place, it turned out her boyfriend was out on the town, but she managed to convince the apartment manager to fork out for the cab fare.
# This illustrates my point that hookers don’t lie. Here was a young woman who’d gone through a traumatic ordeal, who felt afraid of being injured by a bad date, enough to jump out of a moving car. Some folks would’ve given her free cab ride, and I didn’t expect to get paid. Yet her word was her bond, and she made good on it. Over 27 years, I’ve gotten stiffed by con artists, young punks, lawyers, registered nurses, financial tycoons and even a standing judge. I’ve had to fend off a couple of attempted robberies. But I never had trouble with hookers riding in my cab.
# A serial killer stalked Vancouver during the last decades of the 20th-century. He owned a pig farm east of the city. He murdered more than fifty young women, many of whom were runaways from dysfunctional families; many were zonked on drugs of one sort or another. They may’ve taken a few wrong turns, but they were human beings just trying to survive. The pig farmer found a novel way to dispose of his victims. He’d grind them up with his fodder and feed the result to his pigs. It made DNA retrieval difficult if not impossible, so the world may never know how many young women he murdered.
# In a small way, I wanted to pay homage to the young women who service the sex trade, and especially to the victims of the pig farmer. The main character of “Loose Threads” is Nyssa Persson who spent three years under the thumb of a Tokyo pimp. Nyssa has a feisty nature which is composite of several women I’ve known, including my late wife.
# The narrative isn’t about Nyssa’s years in the sex trade; it’s about adjusting to life after her rescue. In her new life, she no longer has to perform the masquerades of the sex trade. Nyssa faces the same dilemmas as our brave soldiers do when they return from the battlegrounds of Afghanistan. It’s not easy to shift from the thunderous dangers of war to the petty quietude of normal society. The adrenalin rushes, the nightmares, the fearful memories don’t vanish in an eye blink.
# All that Nyssa has learned about erotic arousal no longer applies. She feels like a fish out of water, yet she’s determined to make a fresh start. In the company of espionage agents, she learns martial arts and emotional control. Her progress is painfully slow. She needs to prove herself worthy of love, but none of her companions seems to understand…
# I hope you enjoy the tale. There’s more to it than meets the eye.

I was a high school sophomore, a football star, a big fish in a small pond. How many young American teenagers get to walk down the Champs–Élysées and drink Cognac in sports bars. I really liked France.
Fast forward a few years and I was attending Georgia Tech part time and working at Western Electric as an Engineering Associate. I was bummed out to get a draft notice. Like Mohammad Ali, I had no quarrel with the yellow man. I thought the war a huge mistake.
To beat the draft I joined a Navy Reserve unit located at the Ga. Tech campus. I joined with a good friend who said we should apply for the Seabees. We didn’t know it at the time, but that was like purchasing a trip to Vietnam and being in the field with the Marine Corps. We ended up in the same squad in Vietnam.
With all this military stuff going on, it’s no wonder I’ve gravitated toward writing techno thrillers. I guess military life is in my blood. During World War 11 my dad was a Sergeant in the Army Air Corps. He didn’t make it. In 1944 the B-24 heavy bomber he was a gunner on was shot down over Germany. By a cruel twist of fate, it was on my second birthday.
My writing reflects my military experiences and thoughts about military life. Few wars are necessary. Often they take place by a series of mistakes and miscalculations. Once started there is no good or easy way out. I write about the harm war brings to so many people.
I respect the military and military families. They often face great hardship so the majority of the American public can continue with their shopping, TV watching, overeating, or whatever the current fad may be.
I respect few current politicians. Most only play to their base. Since the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, that base has narrowed. Now they listen only to those who can write a big check. The money men, pandering politicians, and the circle of 1% elite, are the ones who send young men and women to war. I’m sure this lack of respect shows up in my writing.
But, no way I’m giving up on America. As Winston Churchill once said, “The Americans will always do the right thing… after they’ve exhausted all the alternatives.”

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.

Pearl even warmed up the roast beef in the microwave, nine seconds on power level four. That did it every time; just the right temperature. Gina loved Pearl and her “roast beast,” and Pearl loved Gina. It was that simple. Gina jumped up on the couch, and sat on her haunches while Gina hand fed her. She was a spoiled dog indeed. A pat on the head, then the requisite “give mommy a kiss,” meant lunch was over. Gina’s kiss this lunch time was not so sweet. Even mixed with the roast beef, Gina’s doggie breath was pretty pungent.
“Gina, we’re gonna have to do something about that doggie breath of yours. Poo wee!” Gina closed her mouth as if she understood, her little brown eyes wondering what Pearl had in mind…
