For many years, I was a writing teacher and consultant, a very busy one with tons of student work to read until late in the morning. When I retired, I said to myself that now it was my turn. And so I set out to write “NOLA Gals,” the tale of two teens caught up in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the worst storm ever to hit the shores of the United States. I saw my audience as both teens and adults because this disaster swirled and devastated all ages. Last January after years of writing and then finding a publisher, my dream came true. And recently I learned “NOLA Gals” was a finalist for the IAN Book Award.
So how do I spend my life now? I love to work in classes with my novel. I will be Writer-in-residence for two districts this year, working with students during the day and with their teachers after school. I will be teaching in lab classes that will allow other adults to observe. I also love visiting adult book clubs and leading discussions at libraries. I have a website at: www.nolagals.com that is chocked full of student photos and work and ideas for writing solo or in a classroom. I am also spending many hours promoting my book online. I have learned the ropes of twitter, facebook, pinterest, etc.
To be a good writer, you have to keep reading other writers. That’s how you learn. I am an avid reader with lots of favorite authors like John Green, Hillary Mantel, Thomas Hardy and my friend, Anne-Marie Oomen.
My dad was British and came over to America in 1942 to train as a Royal Air Force pilot during World War II. He met my mom, and they married, and he moved over here permanently in 1946. I grew up half-British, loving all things English. I started visiting my relatives in England many years ago, and I try to get over there every few years. I love the theater in London. My record is seeing nine plays in nine days. I love theater here, too and have season tickets for theater in Detroit. I also visit Stratford, Canada every summer to see plays there. I have a very large collection of British royalty china that fills an entire room. After the death of Princess Diana I specialized in finding mugs and plates from her era, but lately I’ve been seeking out items from the births of both little Prince George and Princess Charlotte. By the way, “NOLA Gals” is available in both Canada and England!
I live by myself in a little house with a cat I adopted a year ago from a shelter. She is pearly white with gray coloring on her face and tail. I named her Gracie after Grace in my novel. She is quite spoiled, but she had a tough life before me, having a litter of six kitties before she was one-year old so I just want to make her life easy.
Besides Gracie, I have a life full of nieces and nephews of various ages. I love keeping up with all of them, watching them grow and achieve. That’s the best.
I have just started writing the sequel to “NOLA Gals.” No title yet, but it will be the story of Essence as she looks back over the ten years since Katrina and her struggle to rebuild her life and family. I’m in the research stage now. I have three new books to read, all about the decade after the hurricane stuck with lots of moving photos. I’ve had many requests to continue this story so I’m looking forward to sharing the writing journey with students. I’d also like to see “NOLA Gals” as a play or even a movie.

It was 2011. My life was a disastrous wreck. I was trapped in an unbearable job that I hated, my relationship was crumbling before me and I was so depressed that I doubted that there was a higher force at play. I felt betrayed by spirit, and by God – help never showed up. There were so many insurmountable obstacles that there was nothing left to really live for.
Lost and alone, I called out to my spirit guides, and with pen in hand, awaited their unlikely reply. I figured that although the lack of response would be hard hitting, at least I could bring my head down out of the clouds, recognize that there’s nothing there, suck it up and get on with enduring a monotonous life like everyone else.
‘To my spirit guides and angels of the light. I have questions I need answered. I’m taking a chance by writing to you because if no one writes back, it might start adding to the fear that maybe nobody is there. Is anyone listening?’
‘We are.’
Automatic writing with my guides began a deepening within me and my life which would take four years to come to completion, by which point, not only had I undergone a transformation, but everything they had said had come true.
The guides gave me an inspiring manifesto for living – a spiritual guidebook of the universe and its laws. We can work with the laws of the universe, or not. We can have all that we desire, or not. We can stay, tethered and stuck to our disgruntling realities if we choose (and God will love us just the same) or not. It is a choice, and this manual for living can liberate you from that, no matter who you are, or how lost you have become.
I know that’s a pretty bold statement, but I can confidently say that because I’ve personally transformed my entire life with the wisdom that I am sharing in this book. It is a spiritual journey that we will be taking together, from my frustrated beginning and lack luster life, to finding freedom and liberation in every sense of the word – and you can too.

Question & Answers with Barry Crowther
Q: When did you first realise and/or decide you wanted to write novels – and why?
BC: I’ve been writing for around twelve years. Initially it was all short stories, some published, some not and I felt very comfortable with the work. For several years I tried to write a novel but kept somehow hitting a dead end or wrote myself into a corner. This was brutal after many months of trying it was like unraveling a huge ball of elastic bands. Somehow something shifted in my thinking and I wrote a three sentence outline, expanded it and that became an 85,000 word novel. That was ‘Missing’ and I never looked back from there. I have a system that works for me, and I’m sticking to it.
Q: From what I have read, you seem let the reader construct their own images of the characters. Do you do this consciously, as you write?
BC: For me it’s a choice that I don’t describe the characters too closely. I want the reader to form their own lead, become their own casting agent and then see the characters for what they are. In terms of the look of the characters involved I usually drop a hint or two, nothing more, very subtle cues that give the character some appearance, but for the most part, I want the reader to choose to like or not like the characters involved. If I’m skillful enough they will like the good guys and see the bad guys for what they are. That being said, I switch the tables a few times … actions speak louder than words.
Q: Will you be writing any more novels that include the rapport between Matt and Nathan?
BC: I have three ideas right now to continue with Matt and Nathan. Matt and Nathan I can see being a constant in my future. Even though shadows have clouded my thoughts lately of killing off a major character in the not too distant future. I honestly don’t want to do it, but I want the readers who follow me to know that no one is safe not even Matt.
Hannah, Matt’s long suffering ex-fiancee, will return in the next one which involves more of a road trip from Scotland to London. Matt has to pick up a mysterious figure from one of the Scots isles and transport him to meet some people in London. What Matt doesn’t know about this guy is that just about everyone doesn’t want that to happen. All the old gang are back including some new bad guys who are proving far darker than the previous bunch of nefarious characters.
