Living in a cat house
At three in the morning a paw to the eye, a tiny head butt, and a loud meow awakened me. I muttered something I wouldn’t want my kids to repeat. After I scratched his ears, our cat curled up next to me and went to sleep, apparently drifting off in mid-purr.
I will not always be in sync with those I love,
but giving them a little attention goes a long way.

Being a youngster in the 1950’s meant that I was a voracious reader in what has been called the Golden Age of Science Fiction. That meant that for me, my heroes were not on the hockey rink or gridiron – but instead in my local Library where at 12 I had a full Adult card (thanks Dad!) and took out more than 5 books a week.
Everyone from Heinlein, Norton, Leiber, Pohl, Anderson, Simak, Asimov, Brackett, Van Vogt and more….I fell in love with and eventually owned Ace Doubles of my own. While I never knew who wrote the Tom Corbett – Space Cadet series, I fell in love with them and they had a place of honor on my own bookcase too!
With that kind of an introduction to Science Fiction, it’s no wonder that when got my writing work done, I turned my own fictional side of my brain to writing same. It’s one thing I know to write – and a totally different matter to release same to the world – something that I’ve just started to work on….suffice it to say my own works are rooted in that Golden Age and it’s that era that I’d like to one day be known as a teensy contributor to in some small way.

T. Jackson King (Tom) is a professional archaeologist and journalist. He writes hard science fiction, anthropological SciFi, dark fantasy/horror and contemporary fantasy/magic realism–but that didn’t happen until he was 38.
Before then, college years spent in Paris and in Tokyo led Tom into antiwar activism, hanging out with some Japanese hippies and learning how often governments lie to their citizens. The latter lesson led him and a college buddy to publish the Shinjuku Sutra English language underground tabloid in Japan in 1967. That was followed by helping shut down the University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus in 1968 and a bus trip to Washington D.C. for the Second March on Washington where thousands demanded an end to the Vietnam War.
Temporary sanity returned when Tom worked in a radiocarbon lab at UC Riverside and earned an MA degree in Archaeology from UCLA. His interests in ancient history, ancient cultures and journalism got him several government agency jobs that paid the bills, led him to roam the raw landscape of the Western United States, and helped him and his wife Leslee raise three kids.
A funny thing happened on the way to normality. By the time he was 38 and doing federal arky work in Colorado, Tom’s first novel STAR TRADERS was a stage play in his head that wouldn’t go away. So he wrote it down. It got rejected. His next novel was published as RETREAD SHOP (Warner Books, 1988). It was off to the writing races and Tom’s many voyages of imaginative discovery have led to 18 published novels, a book of poetry, and a conviction that when Humans reach the stars, we will find them crowded with space-going Aliens. We will be the New Kids On The Block! This theme appears in much of Tom’s short fiction and novel writing.
Tom lives in Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA and hangs with a group of smart and tolerant Westerners. Divorce has taught him to smile a lot and to work at being a Nice Guy. Still, he is pretty weird. The best stories of life are never black or white, right or wrong. It’s not so much the actions the characters take, but more the reasons behind those actions.
Southern California resident who grew up on fantasy and sci-fi movies, comic books, and classic RPGs – And I never grew out of them.
I’ve always loved writing as much as reading and in 2012 decided to take my writing into the professional realm. I began working on Echoes of Power, an epic fantasy series, that has since grown and evolved into much more than I could ever have dreamed. The Fifth and Dent series deliver thrillers with a sci-fi twist, introducing eTech and the possibility of living in a world where emotions can be controlled by technology.

Home, no sweets, home
I left the hospital relieved to have survived. When I got home I had second thoughts. Almost everything unhealthy was gone. No Oreos, no licorice, no breakfast cereals whose first three ingredients were sugar, corn syrup, and fructose. No salami, pastrami, chipped ham, bologna, or pepperoni. Gone were the barbeque chips, rippled chips, salt and vinegar chips, and cheese puffs.
My first reaction was to whine about the loss of my sugary and greasy loved ones. Then I remembered my human loved ones loved one or more of the missing items at least as much as I did. They had sacrificed some of their favorite foods for me. I felt truly loved.
Today I will remember “I love you” can be expressed many ways.

• Our point of view may not be easy for them to see. They may not understand our experiences and expectations

“The second man pitched a tent in his yard, and decided he would only go back into his house to eat. “That way I can still have music with my meals.” Two years later he kicked out the rats and replaced them with dancing mice. “This way I can be entertained when I eat, without all that noise the rats made.” When they buried him, the mice danced on his grave.
“The third man burned his house to the ground. All the rats that weren’t killed ran to his neighbors’ houses, too afraid to return. The third man also lived in a tent for awhile. Slowly, a little at a time, he built a new house where his old house had stood. He bought a mean cat.” p. 7

It captures the seemingly uncontrollable fear and the sometimes overwhelming confusion that further complicates the situation he is in.
It’s easy to be emotionally invested in NightRacer because he’s a well drawn out character with an unclear past and an uncertain future. Though he may not be a complex character from the get go, the element of not knowing parts of his life make him a bit more complicated. His interaction with other characters is superbly written that it does not give away (at least not straight away) who’s on his side and who’s not. Then the plot twist hits you hard and you’d willingly suspend your disbelief just because you realize how clever it is.

I’ve been a science fiction fan since I was old enough to watch Star Trek so I’m always happy to come across a promising new author (or at least new to me) in the genre. Dinu Paladi’s sci-fi fantasy “NightRacer” takes you to a futuristic world of spore blizzards and Devil’s Grass and touched towns full of soulless addicts dreaming of strawberry fields. The story starts out following sixty year old Colonel NightRacer AWOL from base and resigning his position as Chief of New Arizona’s Security as he embarks on a search for his daughter, Hellen. After the Great Verdict he had his memory chemically erased, but as the story unfolds he decides to recover what he’s forgotten. What he comes to learn is that life as he’s known it is an illusion, and what he discovers will change his world.
This is a story that draws you in gently before quickly picking up speed. With an unlikely protagonist and a slowly unfolding world, its hook is subtle but strong. Dinu Paladi’s world building is brilliant in its bleakness, and the descriptive style of writing brings it all to live without going overboard with the detail. It’s a story I found impossible to set aside once I started reading, and the unpredictable plot makes it impossible to guess what might happen next. NightRacer is a constantly evolving character as well, and his journey is a sort of rebirth that was fascinating to follow. Overall I found it to be an all around excellent sci-fi story that’s as much personal journey as it is fantastic sci-fi adventure.

Hi! My name is Junia Wonders.
I have dreamed of telling stories since I was a child. I can remember telling a story about a family of nine, a father, a mother, and their seven children (all below ten) traversing the solitary desert on foot with a lone camel, which the children sometimes rode, all seven of them, when their feet got too tired. How did they all fit on one camel, you might ask? Well, a rolled mat was placed on top of the camel’s hump. Balancing precariously, three children sat on each side of the mat and the seventh (the heaviest one) sat in the middle.
Every night, they would stop somewhere, preferably near an oasis or a sheltered spot to camp and rest their weary legs. The children would gaze at the night sky and make up stories about the stars. I was around five when I first came up with this story. I doodled on my notebooks and told this story over and over until I grew older and came up with other stories, which I can’t remember anymore. But it was one of the happiest times of my life, imagining this family travelling endlessly under a picture perfect desert sky.
One day, I woke up and realised I had finally obtained a degree from a respectable university, but it had nothing to do with creative writing. It was for the best, I thought, as I needed to let go of my fancy imaginings (silly made up stories!) and become a responsible adult, which meant I had to get a job, get my own apartment, earn my own keep so to speak. And that’s what I did for the next decade and a half. But a voice inside me kept pestering me to sit down and write those stories. I only wish I had listened to that voice sooner. But I can’t turn back time and I most certainly refuse to live in regret. Each day I have from now on is golden, an opportunity to make my dreams happen. Thankfully, it is not too late.
Having ignored that voice for so long, I finally listened to it. I began writing. And for the first time in my life, I felt so alive. Like a heavy black shroud was lifted from me, leaving me ten times lighter and freer.
Is this what it feels like to finally pursue your passion? To chase your dream? Because it is such a wonderful feeling.

George Nolly served as a pilot in the United States Air Force, flying 315 combat missions on two successive tours of duty in Vietnam, earning 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 24 Air Medals, flying O-2A and F-4 aircraft. He was the last Air Force pilot to complete 100 missions over North Vietnam. While in the Air Force, George received the Tactical Air Command Instructor Pilot of the Year Award.Following his Air Force duty, he hired on with United Airlines and rose to the position of B-777 Check Captain. He also served as a Federal Flight Deck Officer. After his retirement from United, George accepted a position as a B-777 Captain with Jet Airways, operating throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In 2000, George was selected as a Champion in the Body-for-LIFE Transformation Challenge in 2000, and is a Certified Fitness Trainer and self-defense expert with more than 30 years’ experience in combative arts.
