My journey to become a writer began in 8th grade, when I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and pulled from school to recover. During this time, I was left alone for hours on end and it was then that I discovered new friends within the pages of books. I also learned the blessing of creating my own friends by writing down the stories that plagued my lonely mind–as demented as that sounds. Therefore at the ripe age of fourteen, I wrote my first novel. It sucked! But I kept going and now I am an Indie Author with numerous books out. Mary Sullivan Esseff was born in 1943 in Philadelphia, PA. She met her husband, Peter, in 1964 in Salzburg, Austria while she was enrolled in a study program through Georgetown University. She graduated from Chestnut Hill College in 1965. Married in 1966 to Peter, together they founded their training company, Educational Systems for the Future (ESF) in 1969. In 1972, Mary received a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from the Catholic University of America. Drs. Esseffs co-authored a series of books, PowerPoint presentations and software to teach people how to develop instructional materials, teach interactively, conduct a needs analysis and manage a training department, all leading to the professionalization of training in government and industry. In 2005, she was honored by Chestnut Hill College to be a Charter Member of the Libris Society. Members were selected because they exemplified one or more of the qualities celebrated in the College’s motto Fides-Caritas-Scientia (Faith – Charity – Knowledge). So…Who is Jayne?
As a writer you would think that would be a simple question…but it’s not. I spend so much
time living in my characters heads, listening to their voices, that sometimes I forget about my
own.
I guess I should start with the basics: the backstory. I was born and raised in California. At
this point, I’m usually asked what it was like to grow up near the beach, but sadly, I don’t
know. I grew up in the “other” part of California. Perfect for an aspiring writer, if you ask me.
You learn a lot about keeping yourself busy when the nearest house is a mile away…and it
belongs to your grandparents.
I spent all my time with my nose in a book, living vicariously through the characters, until I
wrote a book of my own. I was ten at the time. It was a scintillating piece that cast the family
pet as the protagonist.
By the time I went to high school, I moved on to romance. Why? Because I met my very own
prince charming. I wrote love poems in my journal about the green-eyed boy who stole my
heart. He promised, the way all storybook heroes do, to sweep me away and take me on a
grand adventure. And he did.
We picked up and moved to the Lone Star State and began the story of us. The best stories
begin without a road map or a compass. Veering off course makes the journey so much
more interesting.
True to form, just when I thought my life was set, we started the next adventure. I traded in
my cowboy boots and followed my green-eyed boy to Las Vegas. My home will always be in
Texas, but my heart is anywhere that he is. Our beautiful daughter made the journey with us.
Our son stayed in Texas, to write his own story.
Somehow, in the midst of the chaos that is our life, I find time to write. Writing is what I love. I
might stray from romance every now and then if that is what moves me…but I always come
back. Some of the stories don’t seem romantic at all. They are gritty stories about flawed
characters that find each other and hold on tight. Those are the stories that speak to me.

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.
