PREFACE

My college religion professor would say, “I have borrowed stories, I have made stories, and stories have made me.” I believe that stories are what keep us connected to the world. Without them, we would be in this world alone and in shame. Our shame would smother us and cause us sadness. Stories help keep us connected to one another. Just knowing that someone else in the world suffers with the things we suffer with, helps us to know that we are not alone.

However, often times, the process of living can cause us to feel alone. The main reason we feel alone is because when life gets rough, the journey feels lonely and isolating. Often in this journey we face many obstacles. These obstacles are the hills and valleys that life presents to us. During this journey, rather than journeying to find something, we journey to complete something. It is those stories that we hear, share, and create along the way that calms our state of mind.

When I completed this collection of thoughts, I was 34. I am now 49 and ready to share with the world. Writing poetry (my thoughts), in the words of Alice Walker, saved my life. I find very little reason to be this type of writing now, mainly because God has healed a part of what was missing by sending me a soul mate to share in my journey. But when I was in the midst of completing this collection, I looked at my short (but long felt) journey and knew that everything was going to be okay. Throughout the hurts of losing my mother at age 11, losing many women I thought I loved, battling to overcome the abuse of childhood, finding a turbulent relationship with my father at age 32, and knowing that my sisters would survive, I knew that life was doable. Since that moment, I married my true love and comfort and have three wonderful boys. I have completed my doctorate and have had a successful career, to this point.

But still I feel that I have not traveled far in my journey. My past sometimes still haunts me, but now it does not shame me. I am not in shame, because I am not alone. I know this, because God told me so. I, however, did at times feel very frustrated about life, God, people, and myself. But somehow, I have accepted my part in these relationships.

So now it is time to share a moment of my journey through poetry (my thoughts) as an expression of thanks to her for saving my life, as poetry (my thoughts) has indeed been a lifesaver. It has been a sane gift from God. I have to admit that taking my life has never been an option, but confusion, anger, and hope has been a constant. To the world, I share myself with you, in trust, my state of mind.

He has escaped various forms of childhood abuse and now finds himself an advocate for children and educational policies. Donna Zadunajsky Malacina was born and raised in Bristolville, Ohio. She is 41 years old and resides in Homer Glen, Illinois. Different Faces is based on true twisted racist events that recently happened in a small southern town, Spartanburg, S.C. At the time, I never grasped the real cruelty of racism because I am a blonde, blue eyed caucasion female, here in the south, racism is not usually directed towards someone fitting my description unless you befriend a “certian group of people.” At the time I was working for a very racist Elected Official who permitted my co workers to taunt and bully me on a daily basis because I was friends with a lot of Black Americans. It had reached the point to where I was taping a mini voice activated recorder under neath my clothing to capture the derogatory comments being made towards me and making daily notes. I had pleaded with my boss countless times for help but he never did anything to help me. Then finally one day, for my birthday, in an “all white” office, they hand made me a birthday card out of a piece of copying paper. My direct supervisor told me I had to stand in front of everyone in the office and read my card out loud or it wouldn’t be funny….relunctantly I read the card. On the front, it said, “Roses are red, violets are blue, why in the hell do we love you”. My co workers were laughing hysterically, then my supervisor screamed out, open the card and finish reading it….inside it said, “Roses are red, violets are blue, you are a Chocolate Cock Sucker, How gross are you?” My supervisor along with all of my coworkers signed this card with additional derogatory comments. There are no words to describe how they made me feel that day but I took that card along with the taped recordings of them saying even more horrible things to me and filed a complaint with the EEOC to protect my job. Apparently I was the first caucasion female in the south to win a racial discrimination case for Black Amricans against Spartanburg County, S.C. I was also terminated out of retaliation for filing a complaint against the county which I automatically won. It has been atleast 5-6 years and to this day, I never been paid a settlement. That’s why I wrote this book, in an attempt to tell the world that racism is still very much alive and to hopefully help others going though the same thing. This experience changed my life amd my entire world, I beame a Proud Advocate of Equal Rights in an attempt to help others and to protect them from the pain I had to suffer. Ambient Light: This is the light we will be using the most. Here we thoroughly cover what is is and how to work with it! Once we know how to control the light, we can control the shadows that define our shapes and textures.

Glare: Glare in glasses can easily ruin a photo. Plus it’s incredibly difficult to “fix” in Photoshop. Fixing it in camera is really easy once you know how.

After surviving the World War II carnage of seemingly endless New Guinea battles, then living through the slaughter of nearly all of his Company H comrades on a Moratai beach, Corporal Mikhail “Michael” Baranovitch had enough. He turned and deliberately walked back across the beach he’d earlier charged onto from the landing craft, and into the Pacific Ocean!

Miraculously he survived both the psychological breakdown and ensuing multiple wounds to be picked up by a rescue craft. Too, he survived a Court Martial charge of cowardice largely because of an already epic war record that included Silver and Bronze Stars, as well as multiple Purple Hearts.

Now the only thing left was to rehabilitate a tormented soldier retreating into the wilds of his own mind. All Michael Baranovitch dreamed of, however, was freedom amid those mountains and forests surrounding the U.S. Veterans Hospital where he was undergoing treatment. So he simply walked away from that, too.

Three times.

Twice, Baranovitch was returned by sheriff’s deputies.

But during his last escape, he broke through a cordon of surrounding deputies, wounding one in the process. A “Shoot To Kill” order from the county sheriff resulted.
It’s at this point we learn just how “crazy” the “Wild Man of the Umpqua” really was.
