The second book is another historical, this time set in the Plantagenet era and will (like Geraldine’s first historical: Reluctant Queen, about the little sister of Henry VIII), be a fictionalised account of another real character. The research books she’s bought are piled up wherever she can find a space. She hopes they won’t gather too much dust (housework? Ugh!) in the interim.

Geraldine enjoys gardening and grows many of her own plants from seeds and cuttings she’s grown on herself. She loves painting portraits in oils and, given some of her earlier efforts, has to sweet-talk her nearest and dearest into being her victims. Geraldine is also learning to play keyboards. She’s convinced, if she has the time to practise, that she would take Carnegie Hall by storm. Or at least a little, light rain.

Nicola McDonagh was born in Liverpool and is a creative writing tutor and photographer. Originally Nicola trained as a photojournalist, then decided to do something more theatrical and gained a Hons. Degree in Drama and English Literature. GNASH is a political suspense that develops around two main, catastrophic events. A secret fundamentalist organization that has existed for centuries in the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan chooses to unleash a full-scale attack on the West. The Brotherhood of Niyyat is the true power behind several puppet organizations, chief among them being Al-Qaeda. The book takes place while the United States and her allies are fighting the Global War on Terror and has a military flavor, while still being easily understood by readers who don’t understand the military structure and procedures.

The first major event is the assassination of the U.S. president and four other heads of state at the annual G-8 Summit meeting. The assassination is carried out by a member of the one organization that is authorized to carry weapons around the president: The Secret Service. The agent who carries out the attack is acting under duress as his family is being held captive by a sleeper cell of the Brotherhood.

The second event is the unleashing of a super-virus within the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The terrorists worked in secret for decades developing various strands of the virus, releasing trial versions before the events described in GNASH. When the order comes from the Brotherhood to carry out the attack, the group hasn’t conducted human testing of their virus, but they do as ordered and infiltrate the Pentagon to release the virus.

The virus kills everyone inside the Pentagon, but as Doctor Jeremy Collins leads a team of forensic pathologists into the building, the dead begin to rise. The creatures that attack the team are not like your traditional zombie; the creatures are dead in body, but they use basic tools like clubs and shovels; and have the ability to think and learn from their mistakes.

The president orders the insertion of a U.S. Army Delta team, led by Hank Dawson, a grizzled veteran of both conventional and unconventional conflicts with over twenty years of service. The team struggles valiantly against the undead, but ultimately fail to keep the zombies from escaping the Pentagon’s perimeter.

Grayson Donnelly lives in D.C. with his fiancée Emory Perry, but at the time of the attack, he’s in the Midwest for business. He ends up in the hospital after getting jumped by a group of local militiamen who call off their attack because they get orders to carry out the mission that they’ve been training towards for years. The nation is plunged into near anarchy and militias rise up to fight against the military, gangs attack the police to gain control of their territory and the deviants who’d been held in check by our laws are free to reign uncontrolled.

Emory was in the D.C. Metro tunnel when the missile explodes, so she survives and is evacuated to a military refugee camp. Within a few days, it becomes evident that the daily tests that all of the refugees are subjected to are more than normal radiation screening. She volunteers in the camp’s hospital and vows to determine what is really going on.

President Holmes, recently elevated from his position as the vice-president, holds daily meetings with the remainder of his staff to determine the status of the nation and receive updates on the zombie fight. It’s discovered that there are two types of zombies: the primary group of infected from the Pentagon are smart, sadistic and almost demonic, while the creatures that have turned as a result of being bitten are the standard, brainless zombie that everyone has become familiar with from Hollywood portrayals. The president authorizes the full suspension of Posse Comitatus and orders the withdrawal of U.S. military troops from forward bases in the Middle East, Germany and South Korea.

From there, the book develops along a surprisingly realistic storyline. Readers have commented repeatedly how realistic GNASH seems. The level of realism comes from the not classified (but still sensitive) military equipment, the candid reaction of the common citizenry to the outbreak, the fact that the characters in the book DON’T have all the answers and make mistakes, and the simple human reactions to extraordinary circumstances.

Brian has published two books and is working his way through a third. “GNASH” is a zombie apocalypse novel set in the Washington, D.C. area and “Zombie in the Basement” is a children’s picture book designed to help children overcome the perceived stigma of being different than others. His book “Enduring Armageddon” is a post-apocalyptic fiction novel set in the United States and will be released soon.

Born and raised as an Army brat, Brian Parker moved all over the country as a child before his father retired from the service and they settled in a small Missouri town. After his father’s retirement, the family purchased a farm where he learned the rewards of a hard day’s work and enjoyed the escapism that books provided someone with bigger dreams.

Brian is currently an Active Duty Army soldier who enjoys spending time with his family in Texas, hiking, CrossFit, writing and Texas Longhorns football. His wife is also an Active Duty soldier and the pairing brings its own unique set of circumstances that keep both of them on their toes. Born and bred like a fatted calf in Stockton, California, Scott Cherney has worn a lot of hats in his life and times, among them, a cowboy hat as a stunt performer at the Pollardville Ghost Town, a western amusement park that housed sets from the William Wyler film The Big Country. He then moved over to the Palace Showboat Dinner Theater becoming a triple threat actor/writer/director of several melodrama/vaudeville stage productions. Cherney was also an award-winning stage actor and has appeared in such films as Omega Cop and Under Arrest. In 1987, Scott was the winner of the one and only Stockton Stand-Up Comedy Competition.

His other works include the road rage novel RED ASPHALT, the true travel tale PLEASE HOLD THUMBS, a collection of original comedy sketches called NOW THAT’S FUNNY and his movie memoir IN THE DARK.

“I have to write,” Scott Cherney says. “Can’t dance.”

Bruce Hartman lives with his wife in Philadelphia. He has worked as a pianist, music teacher, bookseller and attorney and has been writing fiction for many years. His first novel, PERFECTLY HEALTHY MAN DROPS DEAD, won the Salvo Press Mystery Novel Award and was published by Salvo Press in 2008.
