You can get results to rival the best studio shooters with very little cost. Reflectors can even be homemade – so they cost almost nothing.
Filters – for the most part physical “on camera” filters have dropped by the wayside due to the digital revolution.
We still use filters, but now – with many of them – it is after the fact (in Photoshop) rather than in front of the lens. But, there ARE a few filters we still need on camera. the effects simply can’t be easily done (or done at all) in Photoshop…

Nikki Knight is a novice author from a rural town near Erie, Pennsylvania. She is best known locally as a radio personality and host of public events and fundraisers. In 2011, while Nikki was working as a freelance writer for a local entertainment publication, she visited a local poetry group with the intent to gain a quick interview with the group’s founder. Instead, she was moved to participate in the Open Mic event and share, for the first time publicly, some of her own original works. I remember being in 7th grade English and my teacher assigned us to write a story about anything we wanted. Inspired by the many John Grisham novels I had read, I wrote a very short (about three pages) murder mystery that I titled Who Killed Katie? My teacher loved it, so I saved it. Fast forward ten years and my parents had decided to get a divorce. While cleaning out the house, my mom found a box of my old school stuff and gave it to me to go through. In it, I found Who Killed Katie? and reread it. Man, it was horrible! Well, not too bad for a 7th grader, but still.The concept, however, still interested me and I decided to give it another go. I wrote the first three chapters and stopped. It was very frustrating that my murder mystery kept turning into a love story! I got mad at my main character, Detective Dan, for being such a sap and decided I obviously wasn’t a very good author if I couldn’t keep my gory murder mystery from turning romantic.
I stopped writing, but not before I had brainstormed a few ideas for future books. Fast forward another couple of years and, at the risk of sounding Stephenie Meyer cliché, I had a very vivid dream that I couldn’t shake from my mind. I went back through my brainstorming list and knew which novel the scene belonged to. I began writing Emma’s Choice and never looked back.
After a year and half of getting 80+ rejection letters from literary agents and publishers, I was extremely discouraged and told my husband, Shane, that I was going to stop writing. He continued to encourage me to keep at it, but hearing “no” time after time is tough. It was about two weeks before Christmas 2012. We went on a trip with our three kids to Southern California with some friends and I didn’t think about writing that whole time. It was a very much needed break.
Two days after we got back home (just after the New Year), I had yet another incredibly vivid dream. I woke up and began writing it out. That turned out to be part of the second chapter of Just My Luck. I fought writing JML every step of the way for the first three chapters. I didn’t want to write and felt like the story was too cliché. I complained to Shane every day about what a stupid story it was and how much I didn’t want to write it. He told me to just keep going and see how I felt at the end.
As I wrote, I thought about what would make the story one that I would want to read. That’s when I added more of a “past” to Gabby and I began to fall in love with the characters. I only sent out about 30 query letters that time, but each one was still rejected. Eventually, a friend of mine brought up self-publishing, which my husband had been advocating from the start. I looked into it and begrudgingly agreed.
When JML went up that first day, I couldn’t believe how many people downloaded it! I kept checking the page to see if someone would realize they made an error and the count wasn’t really that high. It was. My confidence restored, I decided to self-publish my baby, Emma’s Choice, which did even better than Just My Luck.
I’m currently working on Emma’s Dilemma, the sequel to Emma’s Choice, and hope to have it available in September 2013. My ultimate goal is still to be published traditionally, but it’s been so great knowing that so many people love my books.

My writing style is such that I attempt to convey ideas and the plethora of emotions I experience in a way that remains personal, but is also accessible to the reader through the use of metaphor and visual imagery.

For a long time I’ve wanted to write about a long-term relationship and about the way romance can wax and wane, evolve and transform over time. In THE CHANEL CAPER, Blake Weston and her DH, Brooklyn boy and ex-NYPD cop Ralph Marino, have been through it all–the break ups and makeups, the squabbles, the spats and the stand-offs. A second element that went into creating The Chanel Caper was that as my friends and I approached sixty, I realized that 60 isn’t what it used to be (and maybe never was). From Ponzi-schemer Bernie Madoff to bankers in five thousand dollar suits flying their private jets to Washington to scrounge for money, the financial crisis of 2008 was a richly ironic background for my story of murder and suspense.
Other characters in the story were inspired by headlines, news stories & current events:
* a washed-up Martha Stewart wannabe trying to make a come back with the help of a red balconette bra
* a one-eyed, one-legged Afghan warlord who doesn’t speak a word of English
* an über neurotic, germ-ophobic billionaire freaking out as the stock market plummets and his net worth goes down–and down
* a flack-jacket-wearing gung-ho war zone reporter with a humongo pair of 36 DoubleD’s
* NYC’s ubiquitous sidewalk vendors of faux designer label bags, sunglasses and scarves
* the city’s vast selection of ethnic restaurants and foods.
* news reports about the deadly consequences of counterfeit drugs
* the rise of the Chinese economy and the glam and glittering city of Shanghai
* trendy gurus and hot self-help fads
Add in Bollywood movies, the world’s best shade of red lipstick and one drop-dead fantastic way to deal with a cheating husband (+ a dick joke) and you have an idea of some of the ingredients that went into THE CHANEL CAPER. I had lots of fun writing it. I hope you have lots of fun reading it!

Seeding our numbers throughout Africa, Europe, and Asia, over the Bearing Straight and onto every available landmass, we broadened our horizons and multiplied.
So did our technology, especially in the last hundred years or so. The species, riding on the back of innovative ways to harness energy and produce petrol-food, ballooned from less than one billion in number to more than seven.
In the contemporary era, and just as the progression switch was flipped, we stood upon the precipice of true artificial intelligence, the verge of sending off a self-sustaining greenhouse to Mars, and finally starting to discover some of the universe’s most coveted secrets.
We were about to initiate mining asteroids, genetically engineer our food supply, and get to distant planets with big solar blankets that collect protons from starlight. Robotics, augmented reality, and smart technology were taking over the role of living and working from mortals.
Life’s plan to reach out from Earth and evolve on distant destinations was immediately halted without warning by one suicidal factory worker from the heart of China.
In the end it wasn’t a doomsday comet, our planet wasn’t invaded by an advanced civilization, nuclear war didn’t break out, and we didn’t go back to the Stone Age because of a really nasty bug.

About Home Style Indian Cooking In A Jiffy:With an amazing compilation of over 100 delectable Indian dishes, many of which you can’t get in any Indian restaurant for love or for money, this is unlike any other Indian Cook book. What this book focuses on is what Indians eat every day in their homes. It then in an easy step-by-step manner makes this mysterious, never disclosed, “Home Style” Indian cooking accessible to anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of cooking and a stomach for adventure.
Prasenjeet Kumar, the corporate lawyer turned gourmand, in this second book of his series “How to Cook everything in a Jiffy” explores the contours of what sets Indian “Home Style” food so apart from restaurant food . In his uniquely semi-autobiographical style, he starts with his quest for Indian food in London, and wonders why his European friends don’t have such a “strange” debate between “Home Style” and “Restaurant” food. He learns then that in Europe, you usually look up to the versions created in restaurants and by Michelin Star chefs of say “Roast Turkey” and try to replicate it at home. But, in India, you almost look down upon the versions of say, “yellow dal” peddled by restaurants and very condescendingly declare your own “Home Style” versions to be less oily or more tasteful and decidedly superior in any case. Digging a little deeper, he learns that the whole style of restaurant cooking in India is diametrically opposed to what is practised in Indian homes with respect to the same dish.
In brief, the author found “Home Style” food to be different because:
• One, it was cooked from scratch, from fresh ingredients;
• Two, many “Home Style” dishes were simply NOT available on restaurant menus;
• Three, it was much healthier as it allowed full freedom to change your salt, sugar and spice levels;
• Four, it was not only less oily but it also permitted you to choose your preferred oil (mustard, olive, coconut, ground nut, soya, sunflower, rice bran or whatever…); and above all,
• Five, it was less complicated and, therefore, easier to cook.
It was the last point that surprised everyone. So a challenge was thrown and the gauntlet picked up by the author who has proceeded to list out, in this book, some 10 Rice and Bread dishes; 10 Dals (lentils); 15 veggies; 12 Non-vegetarian dishes; 17 snacks and accompaniments; 12 desserts, and 11 drinks!
In between tips are given on how to set up your basic “Indian” kitchen; what spices to keep in your larder; what other strange things you may like to look out for while handling Indian cuisine and finally how using the tools of sequencing and parallel processing you can put together a four course Indian meal in less than 30 minutes (literally in a JIFFY!).
Concluding, the author reminds that the “Home Style” recipes that he has catalogued are made regularly in his home and encourages the reader to experiment, adapt and add his/her own variation so that the food tastes like your “Home food”.
You may like this book if:
• You are an Indian pining for a taste of your home food anywhere in the world, including India.
• You are an Indian, reasonably adept in your own regional cuisine, for example, South Indian cuisine, but want to learn about the “Home Style” culinary traditions of the Eastern and Northern India as well.
• You are NOT an Indian but you love Indian cuisine and have wondered if there could be a simpler way to cook your preferred dishes.
• You wish someone could guide you through the confounding maze of spices that Indians use, and help you tame down the oil and Chilli levels of many of their dishes.
The book presupposes a basic knowledge of cooking procedures. So if you are a complete newbie, the author strongly advises you to start with his first book in the JIFFY series viz. “How To Cook In A Jiffy: Even If You Have Never Boiled An Egg Before.”
