Those who know me – an ugly six foot, 17 stone former rugby player – may be surprised to discover that as a schoolboy I suffered at the hands of bullies.Back in the day, as an innocent 11-year-old, I was a shy and self-conscious, lower middleclass kid, trying to find his way in the world.
I was targeted by a gang of boys from a nearby council estate. It may seem stereotypical and politically incorrect to some but the truth was they were rough and ready and lacking in the same Sunday school-decent upbringing as I had enjoyed – and so they picked on me, not exclusively, but I guess they saw me as an easy target.
On one occasion I can remember being lined up against the railings of the local swimming pool and being told to empty my pockets before being relieved of my money. For a while after that I was wary of venturing through certain parts of the village alone. It’s a horrible feeling, as a youngster, to be afraid of other kids and telling your parents is not really an option for some strange kid’s code of honour thing.
Then there was another kid, perhaps five years older, who for some reason took delight in threatening to beat me up whenever we crossed paths – I can still recall peddling my bike like hell to get away from him as he screamed, I’m going to kill you!’
I couldn’t understand why a relative stranger, who I had never properly met, hated me so much.
Happy days!
I have revisited those dark moments ahead of the launch of my latest novel for young adults, Agent Mouse – Snowdon Adventure, with iPonymous Publishing Ltd.
One of the main themes is coming to terms with the unwanted attentions of a bully and how it can cause all sorts of anxiety and fear in a child.
Being a book for young adults the situation eventually resolves itself – no point writing something bleak and dark and expecting primary schools to place it on their reading lists!
The narrative also gives a glimpse of the story behind the bully and a possible explanation – if not excuse – for his actions.
For those who may think I’m jumping on the anti-bullying message, which is one of the hottest tickets in the publishing industry at the moment, the book was written almost 20 years ago when I was a fresh faced, if frustrated, teacher.
The original intention was to write something that actually engaged the boys in my class who only really considered picking up a book in order to throw it at someone. So I invented a cool character who got into all kinds of scrapes, included a spot of cartoon-type violence and gave the hero a wicked line in… well… one-liners; and Agent Mouse was born.
I also threw in the sensitive stuff about lacking confidence and dealing with personal loss to create a novel which engaged – I want to say girls as well as boys but that would be totally simplistic – all types.
The overwhelming majority of that class of 36 children, especially the boys, really enjoyed the book.
Then it sat on a shelf for the best part of two decades until a chance meeting with Tim Prosser of iPonymous resulted in a recall and reworking (I added email introductions to chapters to bring it up-to-date).
While Tim is excited about the prospect of launching Agent Mouse – Snowdon Adventure, it is quite disheartening to realise that its plot driving issues such as bullying, lack of confidence and feelings of loss are just as relevant to the young readers of today as they were when the book was dreamed up; let’s just hope that support networks for youngsters who face such potential barriers to happiness in real life have better support today. Queue the saccharine – but seriously true – statement; hopefully Agent Mouse – Snowdon Adventure will help youngsters speak-out and address these perpetually important issues.
In signing off, just like Agent Mouse – Snowdon Adventure, true-life sometimes, just sometimes mind you, has happy endings. When I began playing senior rugby I was signed by one of the top sides in my valley. When I turned up for training I discovered that there was a weedy little fullback who turned out for the club’s third team. I instantly recognised him as being the older boy who had tormented me!
Now I could quite easily have smashed him to bits during a practice game but two wrongs do not make a right.
Years later I’ve had my revenge but in book form!

The economic crisis was just hitting home. Not only were banks bankrupt, whole countries were in need of bailouts. But while the taxpayer bailed out the banks, the CEOs were giving themselves bonuses. I’m no economic whiz. If I was, maybe I’d be working in The City instead of teaching and writing. But something just didn’t add up. And every time I saw the headlines, I felt sick. Physically sick. Luckily there were photos of Bob Diamond and George Osborne in the accompanying articles to mop it all up.Out of this, came the initial idea for The Final Mile. The Government came out saying it was time to stop the banker-bashing. I didn’t think there had been enough. Various CEOs and bankers were getting away with ripping Britain off (and still are), so I wanted a fictional protagonist who would make them pay.
I’m not particularly political and I wasn’t after some polemic. The protagonist couldn’t be an anti-capitalist activist as that would be too obvious. It had to be the last person who would try to take down the system. In The Final Mile, Ryan Morgan is a good guy, a family man who lives by the rules. It’s only after his business is liquidated, his house repossessed and his wife leaves him, that he takes action.
As I planned the novel, I referred back to Point Blank by Richard Stark and Valdez is Coming by Elmore Leonard. In Point Blank, Parker is conned out of his money and left for dead. Relentless in his mission, he seeks revenge and tries to get back the money he’s owed. What he hadn’t reckoned on is that the criminal syndicate he’s up against has morphed into a capitalist corporation, a precursor of the vulture capitalism we see today. As he works his way up the chain, it becomes the tale of an individual versus the system.
In Valdez is Coming, the protagonist is a town constable who tries to ensure justice when a powerful rancher has an innocent man killed. For attempting this, he’s completely humiliated, pushed to the brink until he fights back. Valdez relentlessly kills off the bad guys one by one until he gets to the rancher. The writing is sparse, the plot is classic revenge western and you’re with Valdez all the way. Both books were written awhile back (Point Blank in 1962 and Valdez in 1969, crime and violence at the height of the peace and love movement) but they are great reads and served as good templates.
Ryan would start with the bank manager who initiated the liquidation and repossession. He’d move onto the bank CEO who gave himself a bonus while receiving a government bailout. And from there to the government and The City where the deals were being made. To correspond with this, I wanted Ryan to start local and become national – leaving his life in Swansea as he treks cross-country to London.
With my protagonist, setting and plot in place, I wrote at speed, turning out a chapter per day after work. While writing The Final Mile, I drew on my family history and read George Pelecanos. Although I’m not politically active, my parents are, organising demos against cuts, bombings and fracking. Further back, my granddad was a Communist and union leader. An electrician in Ireland during the fifties, he was blacklisted and came over to work in Swindon Railworks. With not enough money to pay for ferry tickets for the whole family, my mum was brought onto the ferry in a suitcase. A true story. Thinking about the lives and political actions of different generations in my family helped provide depth for Ryan’s backstory.
Pelecanos has steadily become one of my favourite writers. His books are thrilling to read, but it’s his realistic depiction of interlinking lives caught up in crime that is powerful. Like Stark and Leonard, stylistically he’s brilliant, hardly wasting a word and accurately capturing characters. He’s also one of the few writers whose books bring me near to tears. A child suddenly killed in a gangland crossfire. A white man and black woman who can’t quite make their relationship work. The love and deception in family relations.
My first novel Wrong Way Around was deliberately noir, driven by plot and character, love turning to hate with just a glimpse of the outside world. Pelecanos writes novels that are incredibly gripping but also carry the convictions of what he wants to write about – his Greek heritage, Washington DC, social deprivation and the hope of education. This gave me confidence with The Final Mile to include social drama. I wanted it to be a fast-paced read but also to catch a glimpse of a broken Britain menaced by economic crisis.
With The Final Mile written so quickly, the killer was the re-write. In discussion with my editor, what seemed to be lacking was initial empathy for Ryan and a bit more realism with the CEOs who were killed off. At the time I was watching Breaking Bad, one series after another, and I thought that’s what I want – a good guy to bad guy moral turnaround. I needed the reader to empathise with Ryan, feel his humiliation and urge him to get revenge. We’ll have to see if I’ve achieved that.
To insert a more realistic portrayal of the bankers, CEOs and politicians, I went back and researched. I don’t know exactly how a bank CEO lives, but it didn’t take much research to see that some of them have made huge amounts of money through insider trading, illegal manipulation and tax evasion. The transcripts of phone calls during the Libor scams for example are jaw-dropping in how blatant they are. For the government to turn a blind eye to this corruption while bringing in austerity cuts is hard to comprehend. In Greece and Spain, there are demonstrations and riots. Maybe we haven’t got to that stage yet, but as a nation we seem to meekly accept fat-cat cronyism.
The Final Mile is ultimately a wish-fulfilment thriller. So while I’ve tried to provide a spine of realism, I’ve still mocked the lives of CEOs and ‘bwankers’. If they can take the piss, so can I. For years, a few rich people have ripped us all off. It’s time someone made them pay…

Now when you write romances, people always ask about the…ahem…intimate stuff. Do you research that? And my answer is always–only with my adorable, supportive, loving husband. Another foundational requirement for happiness.
The kids began to arrive just about the same time I began selling to publishers, so I mostly carried a baby in one arm, a book in another. Then it was a baby in my lap, another climbing up my leg, and my free hand on the keyboard of a computer. By the time the fourth boy debuted, I had a rule that no one was allowed to bother me during writing time unless there was blood–a rule seldom honored, but at least I tried. And I was there to watch them grow. For me, that was another pillar of my happiness. At least most of the time.
All those years–all those books–all those children. The kids are launched, the years are happy memories, and the books–I’m working on them again!
The first publisher I sold to was Jove’s Second Chance at Love. Silhouette Desire came next, then Dell Candlelight Ecstasy, Loveswept, Harlequin, Zebra, Harper. Lately I’ve been writing for Harlequin Romance as Raye Morgan. So many fun books! I’ve picked out some of the best of them which I’m rewriting into a series called Destiny Bay following a family called the Carringtons. I haven’t been this excited for a long time–finding ways to adjust the characters into this new family, finding ties between them and emotions that just can’t be denied–everything feels so new again.

So when the American called me up and said he wanted to talk, I took it in my stride. Why wouldn’t I? He was a former Special Forces Green Beret, he said. A CIA runner. He also said that the information he had was best not divulged over the telephone. So we arranged to meet. Nothing unusual in that.
What was unusual, though, was what the American told me, not at our first meeting, but at a subsequent one some months later. On this occasion he said he’d been made aware of an imminent prime-target assassination, that “one of the most prominent figures on the world stage” was about to be taken out, “within days from now”, though he claimed he was unable to reveal who the target was.
“Watch the news networks. You’ll know who it is soon enough.” He added: “The media will tell you it was an accident. You’ll know it wasn’t.”
I came away not knowing if I’d been fed a line or let in on the world’s most terrible secret. And I had no way of finding out, either, other than to wait, and watch the news.
I didn’t have to wait long. Because a week later the “accident” the American had alluded to was all over the news: the assassination he’d forewarned me about had happened.
Of course, at this stage I had no idea I was being set up. Only that I’d been told something I wished I’d never been told. And that, because I had, I now faced the most terrifying challenge of my life—to get to the truth before the intelligence agencies got to me…

People ask how I do what I do. Simply put: I LOVE what I do. I thrive on the written word!
