I have always wanted to be a writer but things always seemed to get in the way. I guess I never really thought that I would be able to persuade anyone to buy even one of my books, never mind actually earn a living from writing. Things have changed now though; the children are older, I have more time, and a little more confidence than I had before. I decided to give it a go in 2012 and have never looked back.
I have worked at many jobs prior to the writing; from a merchandiser for WH Smith, to a volunteer assistant with special needs children and young adults. I have also been a Finance Clerk, which was a strange occurrence considering how totally useless I am with figures (thank God for calculators and an 18 year old girl’s smile). Those were the days!
Anyway, now I’m all about the writing, and am thoroughly enjoying myself in my own little world. There is very little in life that we can claim to totally control but when you put a pen to paper; you are the boss! There is something exciting and completely exhilarating about that, and I think I will always get a buzz out of the creation of new characters, unusual and interesting settings, and unexpected, intriguing story-lines. Reading is a massive part of being a writer as well, because you can learn so much from other writers who have fascinated you with their stories. I have always been inspired by many Authors, such as JRR Tolkien, William Golding, and more recently Stephenie Meyer and of course, JK Rowling. There are many more new writers that are coming into their own now too, some of which I have the privilege to know and admire, just through becoming part of the writing world.
So, that’s me; reasonably boring, but constantly exited about the world of literature, and the tiny part I play in it.
One thing I would say to all you aspiring writers out there, “Don’t think about writing one day somewhere in your future. If you love to write, then write; right now! Don’t let a lack of confidence imprison your creativity, and stop you from exploring every aspect of your own abilities to the full.”
The rewards are incredible, which is how I felt when Only Human#1, the first of this series, won the IBD award in October of this year. Thanks so much to everyone who bought it!

Margery Kisby Warder has loved writing ever since she held a crayon or pencil in her hand. Though both of her parents were storytellers, they did not give her writing on the living room wall five stars.When Margery’s instructors in high school and college assigned papers to complete their courses, she didn’t dread the required research and writing, but she did throw away a dilapidating second-hand typewriter when she turned in the last paper that finalized requirements for her degree in Psychology and English. She also completed a year in seminary and has taken other classes through most of her adult life.
Margery focused on being a wife and mother, taking a variety of jobs which fit into the family’s schedule and location. When her children were grown and she turned sixty, she quit her best paying part-time job to pursue her life-long interest in writing. She became a columnist and reporter for two newspapers and completed her research on Victorian England and the Civil War to write “Leaves That Did Not Wither”. Since then numerous ideas for stories have awakened her in the mornings. Two goals Margery has about her writing is that it never wastes her time or the time her readers give to her writing. She believes time is precious and that we are all accountable to God for the way we spend our earth-time.

Writing is a love I developed over the years. Deathrow High is my first book.
Written in 2001, it’s a contemporary Malaysian tale (in English and Manglish – Malaysian English) revolving around the relationship between the narrator and his best friend on death row, Frank. Wrought in love and guilt, Deathrow High deals with a religious upbringing the narrator tries to shake off, a new love of his life and an old one he can’t forget, and his gradual but in-mollifiable loss of respect for Frank as the man deteriorates in his cell wanting nothing more than to be reconciled with his wife before the date of his demise. O’ yes, and the narrator discovers the joy and liberation of dance.
I was not happy with it for a long time; but I think I have improved as a writer over the decade. Deathrow High was published in 2007. But the deal was rushed and I was inexperienced and glaring grammatical errors came rushing out of the pages. In retrospect, it was premature to have the book out; I’d not matured as a writer. Ecstasy overtook rationality when the manuscript was wanted. I was given free rein, the publisher trusted me, and I did my best. But it wasn’t good enough. I wasn’t ready. Thankfully Deathrow High was only released in Malaysia, and soon it set sail into silent obscurity. Perhaps I can blame local reading habits or my risqué content or even bad marketing, but I’m glad it didn’t make a splash and instead, died a quiet death. However, I’m looking forward to its resurrection having recently reedited its body. I’m proud of it; don’t get me wrong, the prose needed tinkering, that’s all. The mistakes, unless intentional, have been obliterated. Story wise, it remains the same.
In tandem, God of the Game is an abstract continuation of Deathrow High set in the afterlife. To surmise the two, Deathrow High gives insight of the narrator as a man, and God of the Game after, when he is god – how would (everlasting) life be if anything and everything was possible?
They’re both part of the Dreamstate Series – a collection looped round life on Earth and slung-shot across infinity and eternity to return to the Third Rock once again, culminating, or rather coinciding, with the Second Coming (whatever that may be).Currently, I am more than halfway through my third novel. Hope to see it out in 2014, or latest, I promise, by 2015.

I pretty much inhaled anything I could that had to do with self –help and I learned the best way for me to let go of the past and move forward with the future was to learn to love myself and my life!
