About Not One Of Them: A Story of Adoption, Alcoholism and Abuse:“I despise you Judith Ann, I curse the day we adopted you and your brother! We owe you nothing because you are nothing,” said Mother as saliva pooled at the corners of her mouth.
She began to viciously punch her daughter about the face and head, that unprovoked outburst, resulted from nothing other than seeing her young 7 year old daughter in ‘her’ home. Exasperated as Mother was almost every single day.
“Go ahead say it Judith Ann,” and with that my clue was given, “I know Mother, I know I deserve nothing because I am nothing, and I am worth even less than that.”
I said it as vehemently as one tells a child they’re loved. My older adopted brother Jimmy, was in for it next. Although Mother never quite gave it to him in the same way. That didn’t mean Jim was off the hook, for that same evening Father would begin his violent alcohol induced rages that may land him bleeding and slumped in the corner of his own bedroom.
That was only the beginning of that evening’s terror, as Father would come to me next… This was our life, for no more than after we were adopted as mere babies, Mother went on to have two biological children, her beloved son and daughter. The doctor’s admonition that conception would never occur, was certainly incorrect. Jim and I spent a lifetime paying for that physician’s transgression.
Judy’s physical damage required over 10 surgeries to repair ‘years old’ bodily damage discovered in early adulthood where doctor upon doctor inquired, “how did this happen, who did this to you!”
Unfortunately for Jimmy, a once bright and gifted straight A student, life since age 18 has him confined to mental facilities, never having the ability to live on his own. This is due to Jim’s violent propensity to lash out in society, copying the abhorrent behavior Father unleashed at him for thirteen plus years. Unlike most child abuse stories, the abuse did not stop at age 18. What sets this story apart is Mother and Father’s extreme self-righteous belief that in exchange for adopting them, a lifetime of repayment is required.
And payback is a real bitch.
Well into adulthood, with a cult like prevailing attitude Judy seeks to constantly pay them back- physically, emotionally and monetarily. Yet it is never enough as her own Mother seeks to destroy her life. For these two children were despised, hated and beaten to the point of death, almost too many times to recall. Nowhere will one find such a shocking look at an unbelievable attempt at survival.
This story is not just about abuse and hatred. Its also about Judy’s immense willpower and strength to not let her childhood define her. Its about the miraculous recovery she made to take back her own life and acquire true freedom.

Judy Baldaccini was born in Montreal, Canada and immediately given up for adoption. At six months old she was adopted by a well- to- do, then childless couple and brought to the United States. Subsequently her parents went on to have two biological children. Judy’s childhood history is brought to light in her recently published non- fiction book, “Not One of Them” A Story of Adoption, Alcoholism & Abuse.Judy left home at age 18 and went to William Paterson College where she graduated with a degree in Fine Art and Art History and a minor in Early education. It was during this time when much of her unattended to childhood injuries were rapidly discovered. As doctor upon doctor uncovered old spinal, cervical and abdominal damage forcing them to ask, “Who did this to you” as well as “This is a result of blunt force trauma to your…” A portion of Judy’s young adult life was spent enduring many, many surgeries to repair that with which was cumulative, bodily damage.
Judy went on to get married and have two beloved boys. She is a very talented artist, from designing /painting life size murals in baby nurseries to restaurants and everything in between. Judy has taught art in the private sector and to underprivileged children. She has also been involved in Foster Care Programs and Mentoring Programs for children with disabilities. I was good in art which is why I chose to go to design school and become a graphic designer and illustrator later on. I lead a double life. By day I’m training young women to become speech therapists. At night I sip red wine, dial down all distractions, and sink into the fictional worlds I create. Good tunes on my iPod are a must. I get so caught up in my characters that I truly wish the male hero would materialize in the flesh; especially when I see the cover image…I swoon.I have spent the past several years working as a university instructor. My students are young adult females so I’m constantly running plot lines and book covers by them. They make a great beta team! I love my job at the university but there is something I love even more. . . romance novels. I’ll read any genre as long as there are steamy sex scenes and the standard issue HEA ending. Initially I was drawn in by the escape and sweeping emotion of it all, so much so, I began to create my own fictional world.
Since I worked during the day my nights were consumed with writing. I was powerless to stop the stories that wanted to be freed from my mind. I actually started to get mixed up. I would think something I wrote at night was something I had said during the working day and vice versa. My friends were worried for my sanity but I assured them I had not gone mad, I was just writing. Once I started I wrote upwards of 3,000 words per day.
It was in the early millennium when I became brave enough to share my stories with others. I began to post my stories on fiction websites and then something marvelous happened—I was followed by hundreds of eager readers. I loved my followers and their kind words helped motivate me.
These days I am writing books and I’ve learned some things about myself during the process. I like to write series novels because I have trouble letting go. I like a little plot with my romance, erotica, contemporary. Call it what you will, but I have to have a good story in which to sink my teeth. If I start writing a story I have to finish it, even if it’s terrible.
My dog is my muse and when he tilts his forehead at me and blinks his large black eyes questioningly at me, I think he is worried I’ve been sucked into the wormhole of the very fiction that I write. I appreciate his concern but I have yet to fall down the rabbit hole. Here’s to everyone else in my boat, may our voyage become a permanent destination.
