Successfully titled an internationally exhibited artist currently working on my first photographic art book titled, Cemeteries of Texas: A Haunting Look at Hidden Art of the Lone Star State. I am also a new author having finished my second in a series of vampire cross-genre, Sweet Lucidity, and now working on the third book in the series. As with all new authors, I am having to find my way through the chaos to satisfy the desire of thousands of fans of getting Sweet Lucidity into print. I would not be living the life of a hopeless dreamer if I did not have other distractions from an overactive imagination, a graphic novel adapted from one of my screenplays, Buie Park, and two separate novels, Don’t Touch the Butterflies and Lorelei.
On a personal note, I am a mother with one son, living in West Texas on a few dozen acres of land over the flat south plains. I attend Texas Tech University, successfully majoring in every study I find interesting. Once I graduate, it will be with a degree in art history, with an emphasis on early modern art (mostly sculptural to tie in with my fascination of studying funeral art). I share a large home with a spoiled Chipoo named Molly. I battle multiple sclerosis, a progressive enemy, but at times a charitable muse. It started with those Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books. My mother would take us to the library when I was in elementary school, and I would check out several at a time. I would read every possible option, making every possible choice, sometimes jumping from the train, sometimes going with the mysterious stranger, sometimes returning to camp, until the book made absolutely no sense.Then, in fourth grade, I read The Chronicles of Narnia, and I was hooked. Every book in the series seemed better than the last, and I understood how much joy could be found in stories. That year my teacher read Where the Red Fern Grows to our class, and I cried. There again was the power of words, of story.
Later, my father read The Eyes of the Dragon to my brother and me. We were swept away, wondering at the fate of the boy in the tower and fearing Flag’s devices.
Then came Little Women, and Gone with the Wind, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Wuthering Heights, Brave New World, and Sense and Sensibility. Tragically, I didn’t discover Tolkien until I was almost an adult, but I made up for my late arrival to the party by reading most of his published works.
It is only in recent years that I’ve discovered how deep is my love for epic fantasy. In preparation for writing Shiloh, and as part of my independent education in literature, I have read scores of books: books for children and young adults and adults, National Book Award Winners, and Newberry Honor Books. But I always come back to the fantasy novels. I love the idea that anything is possible in the world of fantasy. There is no limit to the imagination, and I can choose to embark on any kind of adventure.
In Shiloh, I have chosen to journey through a world of darkness, a world of fire and stone and wood and earth, of arrows and horses and clans and legends. And I have other adventures planned before I leave that world…
