As a child, I was always fascinated by history and the stories of people who lived in different places and times. Who were they? Where and when did they live? What was the political atmosphere in which they lived? What kinds of experiences did they have and who did they know? What drove them to make the decisions they made?

I love exploring these types of questions and allowing the characters to reveal themselves to me as I learn about them. I believe that my background in anthropology gave me a tremendous vantage point for seeing the world and a greater understanding of how it works. I also feel that my experience as a screenwriter has honed my skills and conditioned me to be a better storyteller than if I had only worked in the traditional book narrative.

I hope that readers find my stories enlightening as well as entertaining.

Amber Dalcourt was born September 1982 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and grew up in Sudbury, Ontario . She attended French Catholic primary and secondary schools, and for career reasons chose to attend and an English speaking college. She graduated from Cambrian College’s Graphic Design program and pursued a career in Animation. She started writing the Awakening series in between animation contracts, over the next four years she outlined the first of three series of books, and wrote two novels for the series, but felt that she hadn’t quite started in the right place.

She then moved to Aberdeen, Scotland, UK, where she spent two years working with digital media companies. Ochomma and his family are caught in this crisis. His half-brother, a soldier, goes off to war, never to return. His only son, Chibuike, escapes attempts to conscript him as a child soldier. Incidentally, Ochomma kills Sochi his brother in the night, in a mysterious case of mistaken identity, although it was well known that Ochomma never liked him, because he was ‘good for nothing’. As the war progressed, with its attendant devastation, hunger and betrayal, Ochomma’s village relocates to a refugee camp, but he refuses to leave his compound.
