Doug Carlyle grew up in Urbana, Illinois where he graduated from the University of Illinois with, of all things for a novelist, a degree in electrical engineering. After a circuitous journey that took him through 26 glorious years in the semiconductor industry, he began writing great fiction. He also married, raised a family, and relocated to the Central Texas Hill Country.

Against this backdrop of mountains, valleys, live water, and wildlife, he is writing fiction intended to touch all of his readers in a very special way.

Never being able to choose just one pastime, he continues to practice his 30-year long medical ministry as a paramedic/firefighter, while filling in the gaps in his calendar writing, signing, or selling his books.

Doug is a member of the Writers’ League of Texas and the Houston Writers Guild.

His debut novel, published in 2010, is a family drama titled, “In Search of the Fuller Brush Man.” It is a 2012 BRAG Medallion honoree.

He published his second novel, a romantic fantasy titled, “Vinegarone,” in late 2012.

His latest novel released September, 2013 is a psychological thriller titled, “Boundaries.”

His work-in-progress is the first book in a series starring F.B.I. agent Catherine Kavanagh. It is titled, “Book Review.” Look for it in 2014. The second book in that series will be titled “Eigengrau.”

I’ve been writing since the second grade when my teacher called my parents in for a conference because the ghost story I’d written had her a little concerned. By the time I was fourteen years old I was reading every Stephen King book I could find at the public library; I was hooked – I knew I had to be a writer. Through the years I’ve worked many jobs: drywall hanger, lawn spray tech, concrete laborer, line cook, welder, and on and on. But throughout that time I was always reading and always writing.

I’ve had several stories published and I’ve had four screenplays optioned by producers in Hollywood; one of these screenplays is being considered for production at a major studio. Stories…not books -
And especially not novels! I absolutely cringe when an author announces that she/he has just published a new book or novel, and it turns out to be a 20,000 word novella. I used to be bad at that, too, until I began to think about it. I have a few full length books out there, but recently most of my published stuff are short novellas, or stories. When I think of a novel I think of a three to four hundred page manuscript. A book like the few I have out around half of that. But a story? Could really be anything depending on who you are and what you believe, but it’s short to me. It’s a matter of opinion, and this article reflects mine.

I’ve taken to calling my newer published works as stories. Don’t get me wrong, they have plots, character building, and lots of steamy interaction between the hero and heroine, but it wouldn’t be fair to call them novels. It’s amazing how many short stories I’ve read, under 15,000 words, where the author says, “I have a new book out!” LOL. So when I review those little gems, I call it as it is, a story, and I swear, some of them are just scenes! I mean it. But that doesn’t make them bad. I really enjoy most of them.

I choose shorter books because of my lack of time. As a writer, that takes precedence over pleasure, unless you’re talking about my family and friends. They always come first!

My latest story is my first erotic paranormal, The Mating Ritual. It came out this month, and is roughly 25,000 words. Told in the heroine’s POV only, it’s her story. Below is a blurb, and the links where you can check out an excerpt.

Three Faces of West – Synopsis

Three Faces of West, a literary novel telling the story of Jack West and John Hudson. Two MI5 intelligence officers caught up against the backdrop of a terrorist attack in London. Partaking in the investigation of a high profile burglary reveals links to Scotland Yard and the highest levels of Government. Four murders later a deadly chemical bomb plot is uncovered but nobody seems to be who they claim to be. For John, the line between good guys and bad guys is disturbingly blurred.

London, the present day. King’s Cross station is bombed in a devastating attack. Across town Jack West and his partner John Hudson are investigating the theft of a brooch with the help of Scotland Yard. After finding nothing suspicious they’re recalled back to the Police. Inspector Brian Waterson, whom they met earlier, shows them a clock hand indicating that King’s Cross was a terror attack. The brooch, now recovered is also shown to be a fake, fuelling Jack’s suspicion. Reporting their findings to a government officer named Peter Finnin, they are shocked to discover him murdered in his office. Audaciously Jack removes evidence causing John to protest. Nothing is heard of for the next 48 hours, until initial reports come in showing evidence that Finnin savagely bit somebody in a fit of madness as he died. All the evidence points to a poison specialist called Maxwell Grey who is currently held in Bellmarsh Prison. Both West and Hudson question him who stubbornly refuses to acknowledge any involvement in the murder or bombings. Their problems are compounded when Grey audaciously absconds during a security glitch. Later John is horrified to discover that Grey’s escape was facilitated by none other than Jack West himself. Still angry with his partner John eventually meets Jack in Finchley to follow up another lead involving someone called David Finnin, Peter’s tempestuous nephew. His flat empty, they both find evidence suggesting he has gone to Southampton. Putting their differences aside they follow, tracking him to an industrial estate. However once they catch up with him it is clear he is dangerously unstable as efforts by Jack to talk him down fail. In the grip of madness he commits suicide by jumping into a machine.

Back in London another clue lies in a hospital in Lewisham. Spying on an autopsy of a man called Carey; West who was now back notices foreign objects within the cadaver relating to a public house called the Lion Inn. Carey appears to have died while going mad. Both Jack and John check it out as all the clues found earlier are beginning to fit into place. Discovering the place to be a drugs den, the police sweep to arrest two of Carey’s accomplices in suspicion of the murder of Peter Finnin.

Back at Thames house a phrase had been decoded, ‘Scarlet Dawn’, shocking everyone as it is used by the CIA. The evidence points to the fact that the United States bombed London. However investigations reveal links to an ex CIA man called Victor Bruenstein. Both West and Hudson travel to a CIA safe house in Belgravia upon a tip off from a CIA operative. Gaining entry they find it deserted but in a safe room upstairs they make a startling discovery, the cache of dossiers on MI5, including West. John, already suspicious, demands to know the answer, continuing outside as they leave hastily. Their argument is cut off when the safe house explodes, John realises that the only reason they were there was so that Jack could destroy the evidence by planning an explosive device. Rapidly he leaves without John. His partner now realising he is a traitor. The next day at Thames House Hudson is shocked to be arrested and interrogated on the whereabouts of West. However upon release he decides, angrily to track him down himself, tracing him to a guest house the two used previously called The Old Fisheries. After finding a rail ticket to Birmingham, Jack appears declaring he is off to Colchester. John demands to accompany him.

Making their way to a riverside warehouse in Colchester, they find three Russian immigrants. Armed and dangerous, a standoff ensues as John discovers clocks and timers identical to the ones used in the King’s Cross bombing. Shockingly he is staring at the bombers who perpetrated the attack. However the police are closing in on Jack now causing the terrorists to flee, but are caught just in time. The chase, headed by Inspector Waterson demands to know where West is as he confronts him. The inspector is then shot dead through the head by West who then flees for a second time outraging John. He only makes an appearance the next day and in a standoff between the two former partners, Jack himself commits suicide by shooting himself.

Still reeling from his friend’s death, Harvey orders John to carry on. Assigned to investigate a lead down an old disused Underground station, John comes across a hostage held in an old tunnel. Upon releasing him it is the last person he expects, Jack West. Back at Thames house, Harvey and Jack come clean to John, the disappearance, the bombings perpetrated by the Russians, the faked death all to make Bruenstein and his accomplice Grey to think MI5 are off their trail. Finally making sense, they can go about foiling Bruensteins chemical poison plot just at the code word ‘Scarlet Dawn’ is detected. The clock is ticking before that poison can be released, causing mass hysteria and madness followed by certain death. Mass murder on a mass scale. The London docklands is the scene as West and Hudson, supported by the SAS and armed police infiltrate the compound to destroy the terror plan. Upon confirmation of what is going on and the presence of Bruenstein at the location, the SAS finally assault the operation. John, diffusing a bomb on site, manages to deploy the device while under fire from the terrorists; it explodes utterly destroying the stockpile of poison just as it was ready to be deployed to high profile locations around the capital where bombs have already been planted earlier. Harvey oversees the operation to evacuate and make safe those areas.

Going after Bruenstein, Jack, John and the SAS storm his location, held up in a tower block. Fighting their way up, they finally confront the terror boss. With no hope left Bruestein threatens to demolish the building he already had wired form demolition, just as Maxwell Grey appears. Instead of taking Bruenstein’s side, he reveals his true identity, he actually a deep cover CIA agent sent to track him. Both Jack and John are is disbelief as the two men then launch at each other, Jack wants to fire, but the SAS storm teams get there first. They fire point blank into them, killing both Bruenstein and Grey outright. Standing on a hill overlooking the now peaceful capital the next evening, Jack wonders it is really worth it. Harvey who joins him assures it is. Entrusting Jack with a secret, he reveals that there are four old Soviet nuclear bombs left over from the Cold War that nobody knows about to this very day. The revelation puts things very much into perspective for Jack.

Author Bio:
Maria Grooms has been a teacher in the Moore OK area for over 20 years. She has taught pre-k through the 8th Grade and has been a National Board Certified teacher for 8 years. As a reading teacher and a former coordinator for the local “Read Across America” program, Maria has always been a strong proponent of reading but has recently shifted her focus to the importance of developing an early bond between parents and their children through bedtime stories. Understanding, in just the time it takes for a T.V. commercial break a parent can read a short story to their child and make a lasting impression on their life.

Spending most of her adolescent years in Springfield OH, Maria moved to The Netherlands (Holland) after joining the United States Air Force at just 18 years of age. It was in The Netherlands Maria meet her husband and in 1989, the young married couple were transferred to Tinker AFB OK where they chose Moore OK as their new home and have lived ever since. Maria does most of her writing while perched in the window of her tiny lake cabin at Lake Humphreys being inspired by the abundant wildlife surrounding her.
