I enjoy creating my own stories as much as reading those of others. I’ve written several screen plays, two of which placed well contests, but never made it to the big screen. That’s the tagline for my novel THE D.A.’s FOREVER, and basically that’s what the book is about: Four men, who as teenagers were a tight group of friends called the D.A.’s (no relation to the legal profession), attend a special Fifties-themed reunion at their old high school thirty years after graduation. They’d attended previous reunions, but this one, which takes place in 1988, marks a turning point: All the guys are nearing fifty, and each one is experiencing a combination of personal and midlife crises. The last time all four of them had been together was ten years ago. The D.A.’s have grown apart over the decades, although whether or not they’re willing to admit it is another matter. They all appear to be clinging to the past, even though (or, perhaps, especially because) they aren’t in high school anymore. Their joy at seeing one another again appears to be genuine. But is their mutual affection sincere—or habitual?

Eddy Steinberg, the first character introduced in the book, is the youngest member of the D.A.’s, the nerd-turned-greaser who was more or less “adopted” into the existing group during the guys’ junior year in high school. He drives two hours to reunite with his old comrades and classmates, but the festivities turn out to be a letdown for him; he is the first one to acknowledge (if only to himself) that he and the other guys have drifted apart, perhaps irrevocably. Frankie D’Antonio is the founding member and leader of the group, the alpha male, who along with Eddy is one of the main “voices” of the third-person narrative. Eddy and Frankie are “frenemies” who appear at times to merely tolerate one another rather than truly enjoy each other’s company; the dynamic between them is often tense, and Frankie’s greaser posture doesn’t help matters. Although Frankie claims to be a lover and not a fighter, it’s difficult to tell from his attitude—he is quick to anger and appears to always have his dukes up, whether or not the situation warrants it. Denny O’Reilly, Frankie’s best friend and the only divorced member of the quartet, has recently shed unhealthy (and unattractive) poundage and is now engaging in almost promiscuous behavior with the ladies, as if making up for lost time. Denny is concerned about the masculinity of his twenty-year-old son, Sean, who is his polar opposite in the sex-and-romance department. And Tony Franklin, Eddy’s best friend, is a bit of an enigma; he’s just as tough as the next guy but also has a tender, romantic side that the others seem to lack. During the reunion, Eddy is amazed at the lack of discretion shown by his married cohorts, Frankie and Tony, serial cheaters who are seldom without other women by their sides—or in their beds. Frankie hopscotches from one conquest to the next like other men change their clothes, apparently without concern for his wife and seven children safely tucked away at home some distance away. Tony is no slouch either, having shown up at previous reunions with “window dressing” (as Eddy puts it) on his arm, but that was child’s play compared with what he’s dealing with now: His marriage and happiness are threatened by the reappearance of his high-school sweetheart, Marsha, whom he hasn’t seen in twenty-five years. I have been an award-winning journalist since 1989, having worked at newspapers in Denver, Seattle and Albuquerque. I might as well say, though, that I have been writing my entire life. The first piece I wrote was a poem standing at my mother’s bedroom window when I was in the seventh grade. It was about the rain. I love all things writing, even my license plate says, ’1Writer’.

I am a graduate of Metropolitan State University of Denver with a degree in communications and a minor in journalism. I have been lucky enough to work in my field all my professional life.

I have always wanted to be a novelist and have pursed the path of trying to become a published author. I have queried more agents with my fiction than I can remember, and have my share of rejections to prove it. In 2010, after many years of trying, I finally landed an agent for a nonfiction project, a children’s book about a dentist in Denver, Colorado who was the founder and pioneer of wild animal dentistry. My agent secured a good book contract in 2011 with Tricycle Press, a division of Random House. I had several conversations with my editor about the direction of the book. One day I came home and had a voice message from my agent and my editor. They had one thing to say: Random House had closed Tricycle Press. Because my project was still in the developmental stages, it was cancelled.

I did, however, get the first part of my advance, so not all was lost. We never did garner the same interest from other publishers for the project, so everyone decided it was best to pursue other avenues.

I continue to write professionally today for magazines. In July 2012, I published my first ebook on Amazon, The Friday Edition, the first in a mystery series featuring reporter Samantha Church. The second book in the series, Revenge is Sweet, is set to publish in September 2013.

I hope you will become as invested in this continuing mystery series as I have become.

Why did we create “Hook” and what brought us here?

Like most people, we’ve learned a lot by working with our clients. And we started to notice some patterns. Namely, the people we talked to were facing similar problems.

They had been giving customers the opposite of what they needed and they were not seeing the results they wanted. It’s common for people to create something and just sit back and wait for people to come.

But the “if you build it they will come” mantra just isn’t effective.

So we spent a lot of time sharing information and educating people on new ideas, new ways of thinking about and approaching their business. Once we started sharing all this great stuff we ended up sharing even more, which makes sense because if something’s good you crave more right?

As our business grew it became difficult to keep up. Sharing and consulting started to take a huge amount of our time. Some clients wanted to spend three to four hours a day in meetings. Then there’s the prospective customers who want to feel confident you “know your stuff” so they ask for several meetings where they spend time picking your brain (testing you)–which is pretty common.

But one-on-one sharing with lots of people is downright exhausting.

That became clear as we found ourselves repeating the same concepts over and over to each new client. We didn’t want to stop sharing (we actually wanted to share more) but we also needed more time. We needed to multiply ourselves. We needed our time back and we needed some leverage.

Hook became our solution. A way to to share helpful, valuable content with people that need it.
