What underlying values are taught to readers in fairy tales?

Consider the cross-cultural dissemination and transmission of values. There are 2 main theories of origins that have attempted to explain the common elements in fairy tales found spread over our continents:

1. A single point of origin spawned and generated any given tale, which then continued to spread over the centuries;

2. Such fairy tales were initiated and stemmed from common human experience and consequently can appear separately in many different origins.

As such, many of these values can be appreciated and seen as appropriate to the particular society in the time period in which they were written, however in modern times, societies’ values have changed, but yet these fairy tales have not.
Fairytale Fantasy History:

Fairy tales were originally a well-used form of adult entertainment that were re-told at social gatherings, in spinning rooms, fields, and other settings where adults met. It wasn’t until the early 19th century that fairy tales were turned into children’s stories.

Giambattista Basile retold many fairy tales in the Pentamerone, an aristocratic frame story and aristocratic retellings. From there, the literary fairy tale was taken up by the French ‘salon’ writers of 17th century Paris and other writers who took up the folktales of their time and developed them into literary forms. The Grimm brothers, despite their intentions being to restore the tales they collected, also transformed the Märchen they collected into Kunstmärchen.

Lionel Paxton is an author who has recently turned his hand to children’s books. He saw the need for informative picture books for children from the age of 5 to 10. Married to Mary Ellen, they are the busy parents to four boys, Simon, Will, and the twins Jack and Thomas.

Before his career in politics, Klug was an Emmy Award winning reporter for television stations in Washington, D.C., Seattle and his native Wisconsin. Before he joined Foley he founded a regional magazine and book publishing company which he sold in 2007.

He holds an M.B.A. in finance from the University of Wisconsin, a Master’s in journalism from Northwestern and a B.A. from Lawrence University. A seasoned world traveler, Mr. Klug has led training programs on journalism and political campaigns for the U.S. State Department in Venezuela, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates; for the International Republican Institute in Indonesia and Guatemala and for Internews in Uzbekistan. During his tenure in Congress, he led delegations to the U.K., New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Curiosity may have killed that feline fur ball, but she or him learned a lot before exiting number nine. I too have been curious, wondering why we, I or they acted this way, looked or did it that way or were otherwise human.

But curiosity is such a casual word, and the truth is my desire to know was almost desperate. There were times in life that I felt angry when there was no one around, unhappy when life was just fine, times I had trouble with relationships for seemingly no reason, times I felt sad when…well, you get the idea.

That desperate curiosity, along with forty years of inner work, has lead to some interesting answers and some surprising books.

Also, I love talking with those courageous people who are going for a positive change, and I live to see that eye-widening moment of understanding.

Besides curious, I am also a writer who began with a column in the San Jose Mercury News, nationally syndicated. My current project is this book series, “Things That Make Life Better.”
