Brian was not impressed with any of these options. He looked up from his paperwork at the Life Goals Development Center, and studied the applicants around him. Everyone else was quickly selecting one of the three avenues, shoving their completed forms at one of the bored administrative people, and then rushing out the door, because "Charlie's Angels" was on TV in a few minutes and you couldn't really miss THAT. In frustration, Brian turned over his application, intent on writing a scathing missive to Whoever Was In Charge that he really didn't appreciate the skimpy menu of opportunities, and he noticed a fourth career path, hastily scribbled in by someone with vision: "Some people feel compelled to study the world and people around them, and then stay up all night writing down their thoughts on the matter." Brian smiled, checked the box, and added his signature with a flourish. And so it began.

If the author’s background is in an industry or profession that is significantly different from that of the reader, the book’s content may not receive the attention it deserves. It’s a fine line, and I’ve seen it go both ways. So for right now, I’ll just hit the high spots . . . As a young man, I earned degrees in engineering and business, believing that if I followed the traditional route of getting an advanced education, found the right company to work for, and dedicated myself to career advancement, I’d be secure, comfortable and yes, even happy. But after spending fourteen years in the corporate world, I found myself miserably successful. The reasons were simple. I wanted my own business. I wanted to be my own boss. So in August of 1987, I cut the corporate umbilical to become a fulltime entrepreneur. Since then, I’ve worked as a business consultant as well as starting several businesses from scratch, building them into successful income-producing companies and selling them for a profit. I believe the most important thing I can tell you is that I work for a living. I make my livelihood from my daily business activities. I’m not a professional speaker, writer, or seminar presenter, although I’ve done all three. My living—my financial independence—comes from serving customers, battling the competition, motivating employees, and constantly striving to do it all in a better way.     Yury Nikitin is an author of over 60 science fiction and fantasy novels, many of which became bestsellers in Russia. Born in 1939 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, he has changed 32 jobs (lumberman, rafter, geologist, newspaper columnist, artist and many others) before becoming a full-time writer. His first novel, written on a bet, was highly appreciated by the public and the Communist government alike, but his second one made him an outcast banned from publishing for almost a decade. During perestroika, he founded one of the first private publishing companies in the country. Having a home library of over 5,000 science fiction books in English, most of which were never translated in the Soviet Union before, he could select the best of those. In 1993, he wrote The Three from the Forest, a landmark novel that gave birth to the genre of Slavic fantasy. Nikitin’s early works have converted many people to Russian Paganism, yet over time he acquired more sympathy for Christianity, especially its Protestant branch ("In the Very Beginning" is a proof). 2006 saw another landmark work by Nikitin: Transhuman, which gave a strong impulse to the development of Transhumanism in Russia. The founders of KrioRus recognized Nikitin’s contribution by giving him a voucher for future cryopreservation as a gift.     James Snyder was born in Memphis, Tennessee and fell in love with the cadence and sound of storytelling as a child, listening to the meandering tales of his Southern grandmothers and great aunts. While still a child, his family moved to Napa Valley, California where he attended middle and high school, and began taking writing classes at the local college. He left after a year to join the military, and was a soldier with a tactical mobile operations unit in Germany.
